I am a peer counselor at the Berkeley Free Clinic and would also like to write a review to talk up our free services. We provide up to an hour of free counseling, based on the model developed by Carl Rogers (as mentioned in the review by Briget). Each counselor is required to attend classes covering all different areas of mental health for five months. In addition to the classes, we also practice the methods on each other and end up receiving free counseling out of it! The combination of the classroom education and the hands-​on experience helps prepare us for entering the room with an actual client. We are open Mon-​Thurs. evenings from 6:45 — 9:00pm. We have been offering free, confidential peer counseling provided by lay volunteers trained in active listening skills since 1969.
Our counseling model is based on Carl Rogers, is client-​centered, and emphasizes the importance of feeling, listening, empathy and unconditional positive regard.
We offer both drop-​in and long-​term counseling.
It is absolutely free.
