Description

Specialties

We are a play-based, developmental preschool that meets the needs of children 3 – 6 years old. Our maximum enrollment is 12 – 14 children a day, with about 20 total children enrolled at a time. Our staffing ratio is 1 teacher for 6 or 7 children. Our program is rich in nurturing, materials, space, and curriculum. We spend a lot of time outside in our large yard, with a garden, climbing structure, sandbox, easels, and bike path. Children may attend part-time or full-time, with options for morning, afternoon, or all day.

We combine the best of a preschool with the best of a family day care home, and our graduates are known throughout the Berkeley/Oakland/Albany area as being very well prepared for kindergarten.

History

Established in 1983.

I started the Sheffield Toddler Program as a temporary business. I thought that I would run the program for several years and then go back to school to become a therapist or a classroom teacher. To my surprise, the toddler program proved to be so successful that the parents of the toddlers asked me to continue my program as a preschool. I started madly taking Early Childhood classes at local colleges, and the preschool program and I grew up together, allowing me to raise my own two children as a single mother in Berkeley. My children are now grown and educated. My son teaches English at Oakland High School and is enrolled in Cal State East Bay’s Master’s program in English, and my daughter just got her MBA and is working in Sacramento. I have my Preschool Program Director’s Credential from the State of California and my dream is to expand Sheffield Preschool Program into a non-profit preschool that could provide care for toddlers as well as preschoolers.

Meet the Business Owner

June S.

Business Owner

I grew up in Richmond, CA, and went to El Cerrito High School, then U. C. Berkeley, graduating with a B.A. in Anthropology. I was the oldest of 7 children, and always loved children and teaching and books. I got married soon after graduating from U.C. and had two children, who were a big part of the Sheffield Preschool Program while they were growing up. Now, my own children are grown, and I still love children, teaching, and books, and get to combine my passions every day at work. I enjoy bringing my hobbies, such as French and sewing, into the preschool curriculum, and I encourage my staff and preschool parents to contribute their interests to enrich the program as well.
