History

Established in 2011.

The business was opened 5 years ago and was known as «Pattymacs». The new owner’s business plan was simple: to build on the successful tradition of Pattymac’s by continuing to offer great food and terrific value. With the addition of more sophisticated menu items, corporate catering, expanded lunch selections, dinners, and a complete face-​lift of the dining room, the time was right for the Smith family to make the restaurant their own. On December 11th, 2011 Pattymac’s officially became Em J’s café.

As the new owners, John and Emily want to welcome you to their new café. In addition to John and Emily, you may also run into any of their five children. To the Pattymacs regulars, they promise that the food and service will be better than ever. And to the new customers, John and Emily want to welcome you to Em J’s and invite you to become a part of their extended food-​loving family.

Excellent breakfast. Always get the gruyère omelette and it is always perfect. Potatoes are always good and made with care and attention. Reminds me of Nudy’s when Nudy’s was good.

I am happy to say that the Em J’s Café is splendid. Their food is extremely good, especially the specials. I would recommend the Nutella Swirl Pancakes and the Almond Joy Waffles. Their service is pretty good, and the waiters are really nice as well. The only thing I would have to say is bad is the parking. Although, you could just park at the Goodwill close to it. Otherwise, I would recommend this café to all.

We are a family of 5, kids ages 4 to 9 and we loved this place. It was clean, delicious and friendly. We ate the breakfast burrito, french toast, bacon and egg omlette with a small bowl of fruit. Everything was perfect and so yummy. Thank you for the great service!

Eh. Nothing to call home about. No, wait. There was this small thing… At 8 am this morning they only had one pancake left. Seriously? An establishment that serves breakfast and lunch should really stock up on pancake mix. The food was okay, I landed on French toast, but I’d much rather stick with Dixie Picnic down the street for a less expensive and seriously delicious breakfast or even Nudy’s if I want something comparable in price and décor.

Stopped in here on the way back to DC, after reading the reviews on Unilocal.I always look for great places to eat outside of chain food restaurants. I have to say, my tummy was very pleased!!! I’m a big French toast fan and I have to say, they nailed it! The eggs were scrambled and cooked to perfection. I loved the home fries that were flavored just right.
The service was excellent! Very friendly and food came out pretty quickly. Prices are very reasonable and the settings of the restaurant are nice as well. I would highly recommend to others looking for a great breakfast spot!

Was looking forward to trying EM J’s Café since I heard about their housemade corned beef hash.
Its a little difficult to find… located in a strip mall down the street and across from Nectar.
While the corned beef hash was good, it sadly did not blow me away. You could taste the extra kick from the pickling of the beef.

Solid breakfast. Friendly staff. Nice bar area. Free newspaper (sounds trivial, but its nice).
The waffles are excellent.
The Hash is TOP NOTCH and should be tried — if you like this type of entrée.
It is usually crowded, so be prepared to wait, unless you go early.
Located in a nondescript strip mall on 30— be careful you might miss it.

I had time to swing down here for breakfast recently. I’m glad I did.
I loved the breakfast sandwich. They gave me the most bacon I’ve ever seen on a sandwich. I almost thought of taking some off it was so much (emphasis on almost).
I also tried the steel cut oatmeal. I enjoyed the choices of toppings they give you, up to three.
I like the fact that I can go to a place that has a counter and get a little more creative of a menu like this. That’s a good combo in my world.

EM J’s is the best brunch spot I’ve been to (that includes all the ones I’ve been to in LA). I think it’s a small family run brunch restaurant and it gets pretty busy. Their pancakes came stacked with berries (upon request), even inbetween layers :) I had their special: the westcoast benedict served on multigrain bread, a slice of tomato, over easy egg, and sprouts served with a side of perfectly cooked potatoes — i am not a vegeterian yet I thoroughly enjoyed every last bite. All the recipes seem to be very well thought out, as it reflects in the details of their ingredients and the way the food is put together. Needless to say, I was very impressed. Will be coming back, a lot.

Quick service, delicious food and hot coffee. Can’t ask for too much more than that on a Sunday morning. I got the sweet potato hash special with poached eggs, bacon and spicy hollandaise sauce. The sweet potato was soooo good. I would love to know how they prepared it. If I could change one thing I would make the sauce a little spicier but all the flavors were great overall and it was a perfectly filling portion.
My friend got the hangover breakfast sandwich which was bacon, eggs, potato and caramelized onion on a long white toasted roll. He said it was really good and it was an awesome size for the price.
Coffee was good too! The servers were very polite and you can pay up front so that was convenient. Small, quiet and quaint atmosphere.

The breakfast was great. Came here the last two days and the food was awesome. I had eggs, toast, corned beef. The first day the register was out but the service was made up for the malfunction. The next day great service and breakfast. I plan to return whenever in the area.

Em J’s Café is fantastic. The wait staff is attentive and knowledgeable, the owners are friendly– and often working there which is nice to see and recognize them after 7 trips!
Any meats you eat there– the homemade corn beef hash (NOM), bacon, homemade cured lunch meats, etc– phenomenal.
You can tell all their food is fresh and well made. Besides my one burger (plain and not cooked well), every other meal I have enjoyed.

along with hash browns
You cannot tell their gluten free options from the gluten-​filled.

Café is really cute — but the overall experience was meh. The hostess (who I think was one of the owners) was super friendly, informative and helpful. Server was the opposite. The hostess promised the server would share specials when she came, the girl didn’t even know what they were. She (the server) came over, said hello and what would you like order? I asked about the specials, she gave me a blank look. Brought our food out, didn’t come back again until I flagged her down for more coffee and condiments, and when she brought those out she left the check. The food was okay, not great. And I know this is nit-​picky, but I was a server for a long time and I always hated cleaning out the ketchup and hot sauce tops. But MAN was it nasty today when every sauce I picked up had a huge buildup of crust. Was hoping for better.

Their slogan Good food, Done Right. Is an understatement! Fast and friendly servers who seem genuinely interested in their guests needs, unlike some local joints. I recently enjoyed a delicious breakfast of poached eggs and Canadian bacon. The toast was not too buttery and the breakfast potatoes were nice and crispy. The perfect Saturday breakfast!
The only reason I give this place 4 stars is it’s real estate. The strip mall environment just lacks character that an old diner or small café has. Their signage is a bit hard to read — although real effort has been made to warm up the interior. I have been bypassing it for awhile because of the location, but now I know the food and service is so good I’ll make more of an effort! Also not very busy for a Saturday — a pleasant surprise!

It was my second time to this cozy brunch place. The waitresses are friendly and service is prompt. Last time I had their Eggs Benedict, and this time was 2 pancakes, 2 eggs and 2 sausages. My friend got the Italian Omelet. All were above average.
A few tips, parking is a little tight, you seat yourself when you go in, don’t forget to check the specials written on the chalkboard, and you bring the check to the counter.
