LIK BEVERLY HILLS – Peter Lik Fine Art Photography

Peter Lik is now in Beverly Hills. I first saw his photography in a gallery in Las Vegas. Almost life-​size photos with surreal images. His gallery is an EXPERIENCE. No ordinary photographer, Peter Lik has created his own process. His awareness of light and color and photography development makes him a leader among photographers. I asked about how he gets his photos luminous as thought they were backlit – and as I recall, it is mounted on a special metallic like «paper.» Whatever it is, his photos light up a room! He has dark rooms where you can also look at his photos under very dim light. Incredible! I admit that some of the color looked «enhanced» shall we say. I absolutely LOVE his photo of the central park stairs in New York. Lot of New York photos. Interesting fact: Mr. Lik is the record holder for the highest selling photograph ever! His «Phantom» photo sold for 6 Million dollars I believe! (I will check and confirm this later as I am going to be going back soon). Needless to say, I certainly could not afford to buy any of these large works. He does sell small versions though – very pricey.

Let me start by saying I’m not a collector. So this review is intended for fellow novice buyers about my experience, what I’ve learned and my overall opinion. We recently received our piece after 7 weeks. I thought they were going to stay on top of the delivery and keep us updated. We only received 1 email that it was shipping and it was on it’s way. However, after a week I had to call the gallery and find out why it was sitting at Seco for a week. Seco is the shipper and the hub was already here in LA. I wonder if this annoyed the delivery group Seco, since they were less than pleasant when they delivered the piece. But then I looked up their reviews and it’s a wonder why they’re still in business. I guess PL doesn’t care who they deal with, but this experience subtracts from the overall experience. — ½ star
We spent several weeks deciding if we wanted the piece we saw in BH. I’m not familiar with purchasing «art», but we liked the picture and the size. They have tiered pricing system so the more they sell the more expensive a piece will cost. We did our research and despite the negative article you can find in the NY Times and artnet (
) we still wanted the piece. It feels like a sales ploy to rush you to purchase. But if you read the articles as we did, we’ll admit we’re not collectors, so valuation is up to you. PL has cool pictures, but they are pretty pricey, and I don’t think this is art that will appreciate. But it’s a nice piece to display in our house. It is only mass produced by PL, that we know of and the way it’s framed looks really good. Art is as hard to describe as what constitutes as «good» music. Supposedly PL was quoted in defense of his over pricing and evaluation «It’s like a Mercedes-​Benz,» he said. «You drive it off the lot, it loses half its value.» If this is true he even admits it won’t appreciate. minus ½ star
After a couple of weeks of shopping around at different PL galleries I finally went back into the BH gallery and we met the manager. He offered us the same lowest price that another gallery offered. I was originally going back and forth with another sales person and that persons price was higher. So it helps to shop around and speak to the manager of the gallery. (minus half a star for not giving the best price from the get go)
For the amount they sell their pieces and how much we paid, you’d think that a Beverly HIlls «established» gallery would have a recommended /​preferred installer. One of the 3 installers they recommended, I used because I found them on Unilocal.And they are general movers and handymen. These guys have never heard of Peter Lik. (minus ½ stars)
Advice\complaint — When hanging the art work, they us a bracket system in which you need a specific #7 screw. You think for the $$$$ you spend they’d throw those in, but nope you have to get those yourself. And what is annoying, you think the sales people would tell you that. Instead you end up opening the box hoping to hang the piece then you realize, «Shoot! I have to make a trip to the hardware store» to buy a specific screw. (minus ½ stars).
What gives them a half star back is, they throw in a pieces of art that we like. So again it’s worth is up to you. According to artnet it’s unjustifiably expensive. In my opinion if you like it, it’s up to you. We read the negative articles and decided after shopping around. We’re okay with the purchase. It could be a scheme, but we knew the negativity before going in.
Lastly, we spent a lot of money, at least they can get my name right. I say this to emphasize 2 things. One to them you’re not anyone special. Just a mark to be made. You might think, big deal it’s just a name. But you can’t deny it’s a lack of attention to detail and quality of service. minus 1 star
Also I noticed on the shipping invoice the piece is only insured up to $ 750. I don’t want to say how much we spent but that’s no where near the amount.

What an amazing experience buying a peice of art in this gallery. Peter Lik has been a favorite of my husbands for some time and we finally decided to invest in a beautiful peice of art.
The gentleman who help us, Alex, was so knowledgeable about each peice we looked at. We ended up falling in love with a lilly pad piece and almost invested in a second peice.

I love color. I am automatically drawn to it, and the more color there is, the more it speaks to my soul. Thus, I was drawn into this gallery of brilliant, dazzling photos like a magnet. Thing is, though, some of these photographs, for instance, a full panel of 4 to fill an entire wall, well, it goes for $ 38,000. Yes, I typed that correctly. It is absolutely stunning and spectacular. It was like I was standing in the middle of this canyon, a very green, lush canyon with waterfalls, just dazzling. I can’t describe it aptly, trust me, but if you were to see it, your jaw would drop. They have it showcased in a separate, dark room, and you will be immediately drawn in to want to buy it… until you hear the price.
If I had that kind of money, I’d buy it. However, I don’t. This particular gallery features scenery mostly from Oregon and Washington, and if you’ve ever been, you know the scenery is spectacularly gorgeous. There’s also a few of the Grand Canyon, as well as a black and white of NYC that I fell in love with. The photographs are by Peter Lik, and he is a very well known scenery photographer. I’ve actually been to his gallery in the Forum Shops in Las Vegas, too, so while I’m definitely drawn to his work, I had no idea it was his place in Beverly Hills until I was halfway through the gallery. I just wasn’t paying attention to the names of what I was walking into. Once I saw a few photographs, I knew it looked familiar, and I knew I was hooked on these gorgeous photographs. OMG, I would have taken my own pictures of the pictures, but when I say that they followed us around like hawks, I just knew they’d probably take my cell phone, throw it on the ground, and stomp on it a few times. I didn’t want to chance it. Still and all, I wish I could take a few… and let’s be honest, my purpose is to parade them on Unilocal for all of you to see. It’s fun to window shop, it’d be even more fun to buy one of these, but go see for yourself… sooooooooooooo worth it to see them in person. Mr. Lik is an amazing photographer. He takes it to a whole new level !!
