History

Dr. Billips formed City of Angels Dermatology after practicing 10 years throughout southern California to better serve her patient population. City of Angels’ first practice location was its Long Beach location adjacent to Memorial Hospital at 2888 Long Beach Boulevard, Suite 325, Long Beach, CA 90 806. About a year later City of Angels Dermatology established a second office at Cedar Sinai Medical Towers which were later relocated to its current Beverly Hills location at 435 N Roxbury Drive, Suite 207, Beverly Hills, CA 90 210.

Dr. Mavis W Billips, Medical Director of City of Angels Dermatology is a skin cancer specialist, board-​certified in dermatology by the American Board of Dermatology and has been serving the medical community for over 16 years. Mavis W Billips MD MPH is a graduate of Brown University School of Medicine, Harvard University’s School of Public Health and Tougaloo College. Dr. Billips completed her dermatology residency at King Drew Medical Center. Dr. Billips is a Diplomat of the American Board of Dermatology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) and a member of the medical staff at Cedars Sinai Medical Center.

Dr. Billips specializes in general dermatology, dermatological surgery and preventative treatments of skin cancer, acne, eczema, treatment for rashes and vitiligo, shaving bumps, sun damaged skin and other disorders of the skin.

Dr. Billips is AMAZING. I saw her for my acne and the products she prescribes really works well. She’s really thorough and I feel like she really listens to you and your concerns. I’ve seen a couple different dermatologist, and so far she is my favorite. She really knows her stuff.
However, I am taking one star away because I’m not too sure about the billing department. I have paid all of my co-​pays on time, and somehow had an outstanding balance of $ 180 out of no where. I emailed the billing department and I think it’s been resolved.
But just a note, keep your receipts.

Dr. Billips has helped me tremendously and I have been going to her for years. She guided me through my acne journey and now I haven’t had a break out in over 6 months. I am so happy with the service and care and appreciate all she has done!

If I could give 0 stars, I would! I went to the Long Beach Office. I’ve never had such a bad experience and won’t go back to this hack! First the office staff gave me grief because they couldn’t find my online registration, that took forever to fill out. So I had to fill out the paperwork then, which was what every other doctor’s office does… no biggie! The attitude was that I am an incompetent, which I am not. When I finally got to see the doctor, almost an hour later, she was cold and uncaring. I was there because I had cancer on my nose. She didn’t look any other place on my body… just my nose. Really? Then I told her about a growth I had on my arm, so she got the canister to freeze the growth. She kept spraying it and spraying it. like 4 – 5 times. I can’t tell you how deeply it burned me, which took several months to heal. I have had that done in other doctor’s offices and they only spray it once, twice at the max and only for a second. She just held it over the spot and kept spraying in long sprays, not spurts like other doctors. I would never let her touch me again for anything! Totally unprofessional on all levels! BEWARE! DO NOT USE THIS DERMATOLOGIST! I don’t know where she got her license, but it must have been from a Cracker Jack box! She has a real chip on her shoulder. Even her picture is unfriendly with her arms folded in front of her.

I cannot express how frustrated and mad I am with thecontinued lack of response to my needs! They told me I have skin cancer but they do not seem to care at all!
I have called repeatedly but I have not get any of my called returned. I sent photos of my condition 4 days ago and there is no response.
Here is my course of action: I will file a formal complaint with both Monarch and Scan. I will seek another doctor who cares. I refuse to accept this complete and willful negligence of my skin cancer! This practice is either terribly managed, incompetent or willfully negligent in their duties to care for patients. I really don’t care which of those is the reason. I just need my condition diagnosed and get a recommended course of action to cure it.

I’ve been here twice both times everything was smooth I like dr billups she’s very thorough. I did notice from the other reviews about the office staff. I had no problem with the staff. They do their job even when I observed patients come in with an attitude the staff stayed composed. In very glad I came to see dr billups and didn’t jus go by the reviews. What is the point of an appointment? All I wanted was a simple check up, what a complete waste of time. I drove to Beverly Hills for an appointment at 2:30 at 320 I was still waiting in the waiting area. They told me I still had a long wait ahead of me, they never once explained what was going on? The office is small and tight, and don’t waste your time with their online enrollment form, it took me 20 minutes to fill out and the system failed.
Unless your into wasting a lot of time, do yourself a favor and find another dermatologist.

I finally lucked up! A new employee must have answered the phone because she actually shared management’s contact information with me. After contacting him, I was issued a check in about two days. My 2-​year issue is now resolved.
I found it odd that once the check was issued, management offered to put a new sunblock on hold for me. As to why he’d think I would ever do business with them again is beyond me. You’d have to pay me to go back there…

i also wish there were 0 stars. i was overcharged by $ 333.00 for a 5 minute «appointment» with mavis billips, which she did no mole exam, no skin exam, only gave me 2 cheap baby sunscreen tubes, and a r/​x for hydroquinone to get rid of scras. she wants follow up in 6 wks, i still haven’t gotten the cream due to her horrible, incompetent staff, and her billing office also mistakenly invoiced me a bill that my insurance paid already! she tells me ‘ignore the email” i want to be sure this mistake doesn’t end up on my good credit! i suggest we all write to the ca medical board, open a class action lawsuit, write medicare and other insurers, that she doesnt do her job as she should, i saw her for less than 10 minutes, no call, no help with prior approval for over 20 days. im writing medicare to tell them shes ripping them off. beware! and i was referred to her by my pain management dr! i called them and told them not to refer any more patients to billips, and for that dr to look up billips Unilocal page about all the billing/​staff problems! save others!

Dr. Billips was my first experience with a dermatologist and I really liked her! I visited her to get a suspicious mole checked out and have an overall skin scan — something I’ve been meaning to do for years since I have a strong family history of skin cancer. Dr. Billips is friendly and calming — she exudes a very positive energy. Plus she gets bonus points for convincing me I don’t need any treatment for the wrinkles around my eyes. I don’t know why her office and billing department gets so many negative reviews. They require a credit card on file but don’t charge anything until after going through insurance and then notifying you of the bill. I don’t find this unreasonable at all.

This is the absolute WORST doctor’s office I have dealt with in all my 31 years. DO NOT GO HERE. I have been waiting for a $ 250 check for 6 months now. I started tracking my phone calls to them after I was promised they would cut my reimbursement check on 10⁄10. I gave the check 12 days to arrive in the mail. After it didn’t, I started calling.

My wife and I saw Dr. Billips in her Long Beach office. She was wonderful and her office couldn’t have been more pleasant or professional. She took us on time; gave us the most through dermatology exam either of us had ever had; and took the time to fully answer all our questions.
We would recommend Dr. Billips to anyone.

Dr. Billips is wonderful! She is thorough, attentive, patient and very clearly an expert in her field. I also found her staff to be lovely and efficient. The check-​in process was easy and I filled out paperwork online before I came in. I went in the morning and the wait time was very short. Dr. Billips took the time to listen to all of my questions and concerns and I didn’t feel at all rushed to get through the appointment.
I would gladly recommend Dr. Billips and her office to anyone looking for a new dermatologist in the Beverly Hills area.

UPDATE: Dr. Billips is amazing! She is very friendly, knowledgeable and patient. She provided me with information about my skin to help rectify the problem, and she gave me many samples as well as a needed Rx. I plan to see her again in 6 weeks for a follow-​up appointment.
After reading the reviews, I was a bit nervous about her staff, but I am VERY HAPPY to report that her staff was extremely nice to me and patient as well. I do not remember the names of the two women at the front desk, but I bugged one so much about my insurance that she called my provider before I was even seen by the doctor to ensure that I would be covered. Although I had to wait just a bit longer to be seen, I greatly appreciated this act.
I did not give 5 stars because I still take issue with the person I spoke with on the phone when making my appointment.

10 Stars for Dr Billups! Support staff… NEGATIVE 20.
To echo the previous reviews – the billing department, especially that Yasenia (sp), is comprised of a bunch of incompetent simps.
WHY tell me you take my insurance (I.D./ Group # provided PRIOR to initial appt, per your request), ensure you double checked that I will be IN NETWORK, have two office visits and then I get a bill for almost $ 400?
$ 400!!! For two office visits? Seriously? How much did the insurance pay – $ 5?
Yasenia’s excuse: «We are contracted with Blue X and Blue Shield, but apparently not the Covered California portion. We too have been getting the run-​around and are confused. Maybe you should call and figure this out.» Yes, but you’re not stuck with the patient responsibility portion of $ 398. I am. Isn’t it your job to know what insurance your employer accepts for her patients? At a Dr’s office???
Perhaps the fault is mine for not double-​checking a professional’s credibility and knowledge of her job duties. Damn, doing your job, shouldn’t I get your paycheck too?!
Dr B, I ADORE you. I’ll have to catch you next go round… upon your getting a support staff overhaul.

I’ve been to see a few dermatologist and Dr. Billups by far is the BEST! She’s so thorough! I am very impressed with her knowledge base, bedside manner and preventative treatment suggestions. I am so relieved to have finally found a dermatologist that I feel real good about. My whole family will be going to see her.

I made a last minute appointment for my daughter and was able to get an appointment within the week. Even though my daughter was extra late she wasn’t turned away or made to feel bad, she was still seen and didn’t have to wait all day. Dr. Billips was pleasant explained everything in detail about my daughter’s skin condition and treatments. She took some extra time to talk to my high school aged daughters about college. I appreciate her demeanor, and beautiful smile. She’s a funny lady and a great dermatologist! I would recommend her in a heartbeat.

I’ve never experienced such abominable ethics from a doctor office staff. First, I was given an appointment and not advised of a new financial policy until I arrived to their office. I feel the staff was unprofessional and only concerned with shafting patients with their new policy.
If you have insurance, the office is asking that you put a CC on file for any charges that may not be covered by your insurance during the time of your visit. I ask the young lady to call my insurance and inquire before we proceed with a regular visit. This was not a cosmetic or surgical visit. Therefore, I was a bit taken back by their action. She responded and said she couldn’t take that type of action. Therefore, I ask for my insurance card back and left the office. Also, I’m not a new patience of this office which really upset me.
Under NO circumstance will I ever leave my cc number or banking information with anyone. The office will screw you and leave you to clean up with mess with a financial burden.

I learned about Dr. Billips from my very discerning father-​in-​law and my very skeptical husband :) they both loved her and she removed several freckles and a questionable mole from their faces. I went to her and after a lifetime of dealing with adult skin issues, she gave me a clear, easy treatment plan that worked using products that were not overly expensive and that above all things worked! II am on a clear path to healthy skin after a lifetime of hodge-​podge advice & over the counter stuff. She has successfully treated all three of my kids challenged with acne, dry skin and girl hormones :0 — I recommend her highly. Add polite, friendly office staff and reasonable parking (though BH can be a challenge) — this one is a keeper!
