I live in San Francisco but grew up in Coal Run, Ohio(between Beverly and Lowell). I came home yesterday to spend time with family for a few days and was introduced by my father to the Sweet Shop. My dad said the owner had started by selling fresh baked goods at farmers’ markets on Saturdays and quickly established a loyal customer base. If you know anything about how amazing baked goods are in Ohio generally, you will appreciate how impressive it is to stand out in a very talented crowd. Anyway, I ordered the Rhubarb pie and the cinnamon roll. Both were incredible. The crust on the Rhubarb pie was flaky and dry on the outside just the way I like home-made crust, and the Rhubarb was incredibly fresh without too much sweetness which many people don’t realize can ruin the tartness of the Rhubarb. It was probably the best Rhubarb pie that I have tasted. Sorry San Francisco, as much as I love you, you got nothing on Beverly, Ohio when it comes to baking from the heart. Not sure how many people even know Unilocal exists in rural Ohio, but if anyone is reading this and near the area, don’t miss out on this bakery.
