Big Sur Campground and Cabins

Great campground. We got a tent site next to the river and it was wonderful. The campground is small and sites are close together but it didn’t feel congested or noisy. The staff is friendly. There are free hot showers, a river with tubing, board games to borrow, and plenty of amenities.

We stayed in a 33′ trailer which barely fit in our site (#92), but we were on the river. The sites are really tight and not recommend for larger rigs. The staff was courteous and the camp store is pretty nominal. The park does not offer any WiFi access which was a big inconvenience for us since there is absolutely no cell service in the area. For the price we paid, we expected more, but it is Big Sur.

I have to say that we have not yet camp here BUT, been trying to get a hold of them for over a week. We need to move out reservation because my husband got schedule for brain surgery (I’m being serious) during the same week. Please, please, somebody get back to us.

I’ve been calling all week several times a day. I only get a busy signal. I guess they’re too busy – moving on.

This camp site is a drive from the scenic route from San Jose to LA. The camp ground has mixed of cabins and camp ground. We reserved two site 105&106 by the river. Water is too cold to play in at the moment. Our site is pretty open and has lots of light shinning. It’s fairly good site for toddler as we have 2 boys ages from 2 &5, where the land is flat except the dropping part to walk down to the river. The site is a bit of walk to restroom and shower. Toilet and shower is clean with good pressure water. We went before the long weekend and sure they are hard to book because their lines are always busy, but you keep trying until they take your call. Customer service is average and price wise is a bit high. But our trip was nice and the camp ground has washing machine, basket ball court, next to gas station and a few minutes drive from Piefer beach. Overall well do it again here but maybe not until July… Logs are $ 10, shower don’t need coins.

Love this place. Last time we were there, we had a site right next to the river. I would like to go back again but their line is busy! I’ve been trying to call since 9 am and it is now 1:30.

They’re not kidding about the strict quiet hours. Warnings start at 9:50pm and you get hushed if you’re speaking above a whisper — not an exaggeration for once.

Loved it so much we booked two more trips! The camping cabin is super cute and cozy! Excellent location of you want no calls to bother you! The bathrooms are squeaky clean!

I know it’s pricey ($ 70/​night and $ 5/​pp over 2 persons) but it’s amazing and has many amenities and services including: helpful folks in the office /​general store (candy, matches, marshmallows, ice, wood, laundry, free warm showers, innnertubes for rent if the river is flowing) and near a gas station and bakery with AT&T and Verizon service and a great cappuccino. It’s 12 miles from Julia Pfeiffer State park and McWay falls which is a must. The ranger station is about 9 – 10 miles south of the campgrounds as well. If you’re just doing the more popular trails like Ewoldsen trail you don’t need to buy the $ 2 trail map — donate the $ to the park instead! And there are some fabulous (pricey but great food and views) nearby– accessible with a bike too but Highway 1 really doesn’t have a bike path so do so carefully. Camping in the redwoods is totally serene– you hear birds start to chirp very early and the river flow all the time if your are at camp. I’m sure if you book very early (more than 4 months ahead of an April spring break) you can get great and cheaper sites through
at Julia Pfeiffer or nearby state parks (Fernwood, Ventana Etc). But you may need to do that Jan 1 when the season opens. The other option is Treebones which is about 20 miles south of our camp but is pricey for its convenience (furnished yurts). We loved Big Sur and honestly with all our travels some of the most beautiful coastal views ever — I didn’t think the Pacific was ever that blue in California. Breathtaking!

I would rate appropriately if they ever answered the phone, it’s a busy signal all week. Is there a different phone number to call???

We used to go every year with a few families, the kids loved it when they were little. Now they’ve jacked up the rates to over 3X what they were five years ago. And unfortunately, if you’re up past 10pm they don’t even tolerate whispering at your campfire — and make it very uncomfortable if you do. Good location along the creek & Big Sur, but the hosts have ruined it.

Beautiful campground we had a great site #93 right on stream. People were all very friendly and the bathrooms and showers which were free were spotless nice hot steamy showers.

You will not find a more beautiful, or well maintained, campground in all of Big Sur. Big Sur Campground & Cabins, the granddaddy of them all, has been around for 60 years now (opened in 1955), and still boasts the best location. Massive redwoods throughout the entire campground, all right along the Big Sur river. Tent sites, RV sites, and around a dozen or so cabins. Prices are ‘Big Sur’, meaning not cheap. Tent sites start at around $ 50 a night, and cabins (sleeping up to 6) can go as high as $ 400+ per night.
Another serious bonus (if you’re used to camping at all) is how incredibly clean their facilities are. They are steam-​cleaned multiple times every day, and the showers etc. are not coin-​operated. You can enjoy a nice long hot shower in a ridiculously clean bathhouse. Camping bliss.
They are however very strict on their ‘quiet hours’, from 10pm to 8am. So if you’re a bunch rowdy yahoos this will not be the place for you. If however, you’re looking to disconnect (no cell range), unplug (no wifi), and reconnect with peace and quiet — this is the perfect campground.

We booked a last minute wedding anniversary getaway one week in advance. I called twice and had no problems getting through to book our reservation. They only had cabin 104 available, which was by the river, so we jumped on it! Not really knowing what to expect, we were pleasantly surprised at how cute and clean our campsite was! Our cabin had a queen bed with 2 extra blankets, two lounge chairs, a fire pit and a picnic table. We had electricity but no running water. The bathrooms/​showers were super clean too and didnt have to pay additional to use them. They also provided clean towels every day and emptied out our trash. The area around our cabin was a bit secluded and was nice and quiet compared to the tent camping area near the entrance. We paid $ 188 and change per night with tax but it was well worth it! We had an amazing stay and can’t wait to go back!

I loved it here! I wish I didn’t have to leave. It’s beautiful, the air smells amazing, and the staff are beyond friendly. I honestly can’t wait to come back!

On our way home from an amazing stay at the Big Sur Campground and Cabins and it was relaxing, quiet and beautiful. It was our first time camping in the Big Sur area and we stayed in our 30′ RV in space #91 next to the restrooms and our spot felt private the whole time.
A few tips if you are planning a trip here;
1. Book way ahead of time
2. Bring fire wood
3. Bring a inter tube and a rope to float in the river
4. There are plenty of chairs down by the river already for campers to use
5. The River Inn is just a short walk North of the campground and they have a restaurant and a larger store if you forgot anything
6. We highly recommend driving South on the highway from Monterey if you are in a large RV, on the way there we drove North on the highway coming from SoCal and it was longer and a sketchy in some sections. When we left we tried the shorter route to Monterey and it was way better!
7. If you have kids bring their bicycles
8. There is NO cell service or WiFi so plan ahead ;) They do have pay phones at the campsite if needed
9. Bring extra drinking water, even though You are not that high of altitude we were so thirsty and just the two of us drank a whole 24 pack of waters
10. A majority of the state park hiking trails do not allow dogs so plan ahead

My husband and dogs showed up on a Thursday and were able to find a spot until Sunday. We were lucky since summer time is crazy booked!
Loved the hot showers, clean bathrooms complimentary coffee. Close to the river, close to the general store, parks, restaurants. It was perfect! Super nice! Can’t wait to go back.

Was planning a trip through Big Sur and stumbled across this place via Unilocal.I assumed I wouldn’t be able to get a cabin reservation being so last minute (my trip is for Aug 6^th 2015)
Not only did they answer the phone my first attempt to call in, but they were also able to book my lady and I for a cabin! Super excited for our stay coming up shortly.
I don’t recall the name of the gal I spoke with but she was very kind and helpful, I think her name was Chrystal.
So far so good! I’ll post a follow up review once I return:)

We got a small cabin here in early Sept. Weather was gorgeous and temperatures perfect. Lovely scenery on the way down to this place from Monterey.
Our room was basic with a small queen size bed, wooden floors, gas fireplace, games, coffee maker, and a couple chairs. There was no hairdrier and no ironing board.
Outside we had a picnic table and a fire pit.
There was also a small basketball court, hula hoops to mess with, and a swimming hole in the creek.
Note that you are off the grid here. There is no wifi. Neither Verizon nor ATT gave is any bars here. Feels kinda nice. Don’t worry though, there ate lots of places along hwy 1 where you can get reception.
Because its also a campground everybody has a fire. So in the evening our cabin was full of smokiness. So if you don’t mind that or if you like it, this place is for you.
They have a small store here though i did not check it out. Its about the size of a closet so be sure to bring what you need. The folks at the entrance are super friendly and were a huge help planning our day with fun activities.
There are several other campgrounds and inns nearby not to mention some exceptional restaurants. Don’t miss the bakery a few miles up the road and check out the roadhouse restaurant for a great meal.
