Cranbrook

What a wonderful place this is. Nothing else quite like it. The whole area is just something to see.
I did some community service here in high school with their petting zoo area. I fed the fish and turtles and even the hedgehog. I loved exploring the beutiful grounds on campus. Just so much to see.
The science center is pretty great as well as the astrology telescope dome thing where they have laser shows to pink floyd.
Ofcouse dont quote me on that, it was over 20 years ago, not sure if they still do it.

If you’re into modern architecture, you sort of have to be into Cranbrook – at least its history. Lovely campus, well-​designed buildings, and a smart collection of museums. Symposia are oft too exclusive, too expensive, and not academic-​enough to warrant the time, money, and effort, and their student discounts are a joke. (Museum entry fees for students are spot on at half price!)
All in all, it feels very insular and lacking an interest in generating a larger discourse on design; much like the Henry Ford, Cranbrook appears quite happy to relish in its past, rather than figure out what it has to offer the larger world right now – unless you’re a student there, which is, of course, another matter entirely.

Cranbrook is amazing. It’s one of my favorite places on earth. I love wandering around the gardens and getting lost in their beauty, especially in the Fall. The history there is very interesting. If you live around Metro Detroit and you haven’t been to Cranbrook, you must go. You will regret not having gone sooner, it’s truly one of the areas greatest treasures.

this is my favorite place to ride my bike to on a sunday morning. the grounds are beautiful and range from manicured lawns to natural groves. peppered with grecian style statues and sunken gardens. every season offers its own version of nature led beauty.
the art museum is a little gem that offers high-​brow art. the science museum is a great place to bring and inspire your kids. but my favorite is the seasonally available tour of the wonderfully restored saaranin house. the history of the grounds are interesting too.
there is a school campus housed within the grounds too, from pre-​k thru college. on the weekends they too offer pretty buidings/​grounds/​statues to explore

This review is just for the grounds, which we visited in ⁵⁄₀₆. The grounds are very pretty and we were there on a nice spring day. There’s some lovely statuary and we also liked the Japanese garden.

Cranbrook has amazing scenery, yes. However, with roughly 100 years of history, the classrooms and facilities definitely show their age. The faculty is great. I wouldn’t send my kids here but I generally enjoyed my 7 years as a Cranbrook student.
Lesser known fact: their track for track & field is only 400 *yards* not the standard 400 *meters* used for high school athletics.

Cranbrook is so many things rolled into one: it’s a prestigious school, also with an amazing museum that holds world-​class exhibitions, surrounded by acres upon acres of manicured botanical treasures. Where to start?!
The last art event I attended at Cranbrook was the Shrinking Cities exhibit. (
) It was a multi-​level, multi-​media presentation about urban decay… and what better place to have this exhibition than Michigan? A portion of the exhibit focused on Detroit specifically (and even had a bit about the heidelberg project. Though no longer there, this is a great example of the kinds of work they present: relevant, thorough, and unique.
The grounds that surround the museum and school are absolutely wonderful; they hid paths through the woods, and built fountains, bridges, flower beds, benches, and all sorts of things for people to discover. Seeing everything would mean walking a few miles — probably the most relaxing afternoon you could ever have.
I’d suggest finding the statue of Zeus that squirts water if you step on the «tile», and finding the Asian water garden. I fell in love on the tiny island there.

This school is off the hook! My cousin took me on a drive-​thru tour of this über-​elite educational compound. You’d think you were at a New England boarding school. The grounds are killer. Wonder what the kids are like — not too spoiled I hope!
