«We reached out to the company after we had a flood and subsequent plumbing work done in our basement. Eric was quickly (within a few days of calling) and was on time for the estimate. He very thoroughly walked us through what they could do and talked with us about how best to work with the insurance company. There was no pressure at all in the estimate process and we were thoroughly impressed. As this was about 8 days before Christmas and we were really hoping to have all the repair work done before the holidays Eric even reached out to his staff to see if anyone would be willing to work the week of Christmas despite the office being closed (before we even decided to go with them). Once we finalized everything the painter showed up on time Monday morning, did a very complete job cleaning/​prepping (the plumbers had not done so), even suggesting adding some additional concrete to a low spot in the floor so that the drain would function better. He was even able to run out, grab the materials and do the repair without pushing our job timeline back. He checked in with us every step of the way, made sure we were happy with any decisions (from paint color to drywall etc.) and completed the job on time. All in all we were very happy with the work, the level of professionalism, and the ability to work with us on scheduling and insurance. Since the repair was as pass through cost to the insurance and I’ve never had this type of work done before I didn’t rate price but it was about 350 – 400 square feet of basement floor plus block exterior walls and drywall interior walls and I will point out that materials were charged at cost, no automatic markup which was refreshing. I used Somerset painting for a few projects that desperately needed to be done. I had my front room, hallway, and a side room all painted to rid myself of some ugly high gloss paint and foul colors. The project also included patching major holes where I had electrical work done to install recessed lighting.
The quotation process went well; Eric showed up at my house within days to review the work and give recommendations for paint luster and trim work. I had really hated the trim and quarter round and thought I would have to replace all the trim in my home but he suggested painting it high gloss white which ended up being the right choice and saved me a huge headache.
Within about 3 weeks the work begun. Chris was my painter and showed up right on time every morning which was excellent because I didn’t have to worry about being late for work. He was professional and would call or text during the day with any questions that we didn’t cover that morning. I felt comfortable working with him and communicating my concerns. He also tossed out garbage (including my kitchen garbage which I hadn’t gotten around to) on garbage day which saved me the hassle and I appreciated.
The quality of work was high; there was one small area right around an outlet which doesn’t look great, but that was because I replaced a large switch plate with a smaller one which didn’t cover previous damage. Obviously he couldn’t predict that and I didn’t think to point it out. I will probably sand it and touch it up with leftover paint. Overall I am very happy with the work; it made a huge difference in how the house looks. Everyone that I have over since that saw the before commented on how amazing it now looks.
I will use them again for future painting needs.

We hired Somerset to paint the upper portion of our house which is existing cedar shake. In the end, the painting job looks nice but I didn’t feel that it was a smooth process.
There was a lack of communication during the project. The project kicked off with an email one day while I was already at work asking if the guys could power wash. That was ok with me, but it didn’t give me an opportunity to do any prep work (move cars, open gate) prior to them showing up. There was also nothing done to cover our landscaping and paint chips were everywhere. I expected some (the house had terrible peeling paint) but nothing nearly as bad as it was. The company did remedy this by cleaning as much as they could and buying us replacement mulch.
There seemed to be a misunderstanding between the project team and us, about what type of wood repair work was to be done and the extent. During the initial walk through I mentioned cedar shake replacement, even offering that we could provide them. None of this was done — they were all painted prior to any repair or replacement. Repair was only done when I mentioned it for a second time, after a 2 week time frame of not hearing from anyone. I never knew when the painters were going to show up and the whole process dragged on for about 5 weeks (some of which was weather related). I felt like a pest and had to keep bringing up items that had not been addressed.
If I had the chance to do this again, I would have requested a walkthrough with the project manager and painters on day 1, so everyone was clear of the project scope. I would not have relied only on the brief walkthrough done on the quote visit. This was originally going to be a DIY project and while I’m grateful for the time he didn’t have to spend, I’m not entirely convinced that hiring out the job left us with end results different than what my husband could have done himself. Overall, I felt as if the contract I signed called out the project much more thoroughly and detailed than the work that was performed.

We had a great experience with Somerset. They were super professional and did great work. We hired them to paint our eaves, a door and some exterior windows + shutters. But there was a miscommunication and they mistakenly powerwashed our whole house. Oops! Therefore, we had to have the entire house painted. Let me tell you, they were so great about it. Didn’t bat an eye (at least to our faces) and didn’t charge us extra to do it. They also got it done fast and did an amazing job. It looks great. Their employees arrived on time and worked hard throughout the day. They didn’t make a mess and were very respectful. And, trust me, we have neighbors who watched to be sure. :) Listen, all companies make mistakes. It’s how they handle those mistakes that speaks volumes and Somerset really impressed us. Hire them.

We contacted Somerset about replacing extensive paneling in the second floor of our older home with drywall, installing built-​in bookshelves, adding a door for attic access and new trim. Naomi was prompt with responding to our initial inquiry, Rick contacted us asap to discuss the project and Luke was an amazing carpenter. They were wonderful to work with, professional, prompt, clean and great about how to work within our budget and still get a quality finished product. We were so impressed by the final product and a few months later, still couldn’t be happier. I would absolutely recommend them to friends and family and look forward to working with them again soon.

Somerset painted our downstairs trim and woodwork and painted the walls and ceilings of two bedrooms, after removing track lighting, installing recessed lighting and patching the ceiling in one of the bedrooms. I was pleased with the experience, from the first contact to the final result.
Rick is a true professional. He stands by his work. I did not have to put down a deposit or provide final payment until the project was finished to my satisfaction. The men who did the work here were pleasant, professional, and respectful of myself and my home. They cleaned up after every day’s work and left everything spotless when the project was finished. They arrived exactly on time every day.
There were no surprises or deviations from the estimate, which was reasonable in light of two other estimates.

We used Somerset when we moved from the Oakland county area over to Ann Arbor. Rick was completely accommodating about sending a crew over and working with us. We price shopped for weeks and for the quality of work these guys do, you can’t get any better! They repaired rotten wood before they started painting, and about halfway through we realized we had chosen the wrong color. They completely understood and started ALL over with another color! Great service and great people! Our neighbors stop by constantly to thank us for painting the home, as it was different shades of yellow before Rick and his guys worked their magic!

We had an excellent experience with this company! Rick did an amazing job; his staff was always on time, they did an exceptional job getting the remodeling done and took extra precautions to keep the hardwood floors, tile, accent rugs/​carpeting, and personal items protected. Rick was flexible with changes that needed to be made within our tight time constrains. Rick was very knowledgeable, gave us great suggestions and different options to consider with a change in existing recessed lighting scheme to really accent the new hardwood floors and give the room the ambiance we were looking for. Overall this company was a gem, quality work, punctual, flexible, and they went the extra mile to get the remodel done right and exceed our expectations.
