Firefly Credit Union

I was an account holder with this credit union. If I deposited a check, it was held for 7 – 10 days. I found that unacceptable, so I moved to a different credit union. Now both credit unions are part of the shared branches/​co-​op system. No fees are supposed to be charged at any of these branches to members of other shared branches. Yesterday I went to US Federal and used their ATM. Today I notice a $ 2 fee for using the ATM. Not pleased with this at all.

Was a customer for quite a while. Stayed with them when they elected not to let me dispute THREE different charges (never did get an explanation as to why not…), and then my checking account went negative $.40. FORTY CENTS. Did they reach out to me and ask me to fix it? Did they email me and threaten me if I didn’t get that $.40 back?
Nope. They closed my checkbook. When I called to ask how we could resolve it, I was lectured to like a small child and told that I’m just a bad customer. These pricks have made money off of me hand over fist and I’m a bad customer?

I shopped around to find the best rate on an auto loan, and US Federal (now called Firefly Credit Union) had the best rate. I walked into their office with the car title and left within an hour — it was an orderly process. In that time, I met with a bank representative, provided the documentation they required, completed the application paperwork, set up my account and enrolled in an autopay account. Now I just get a monthly statement and feel smart about using a local credit union and paying a tiny 2% interest rate.

Pretty average. It used to be better, everything is monetized. Their rates are not competitive. The mobile site not so good. Good ATM network. Final thought: Better than a bank, but there are likely better credit unions out there; will find out someday.

I’ve been a member for over 20 years. When I give them my member number, they often say «oh, you have one of the old numbers, and a small one, too». My uncle get me in back when you had to be related to join. I used to praise them at every opportunity. It took me a really long time to accept that things have changed there, and not for the better. It stopped being about service to the members and instead turned in to ways to monetize things.
While on vacation, without warning, my debit card was cancelled. When I got back, I discovered that a week prior (just after I left), they sent notice by mail that they getting rid of cashback and switching to a prize catalog system where you got points to by janky merchandise, and they were cancelling and re-​issuing cards. Besides not appreciating the Marlboro-​cigarette like catalogs of junk to buy with points, that was an unpleasant surprise in middle of a vacation.
Online banking started showing adds attached to line items. There’s an Italian restaurant near me that’s tiny, hidden in a strip mall. It’s amazing and the staff are wonderful. Every time I eat there and then view my statement online, USFed has offers attached to there promoting Olive Garden instead. No. Just all kinds of no.
A few years ago, I started getting a flood of «special offers» I couldn’t stem the tide of: life insurance offers «special offer for members of US Federal Credit Union», every week. Credit card offers. Mortgage stuff. I couldn’t pick up my mail without getting a few pieces of junk. Talking to them, they kept saying that I needed to talk to the company directly at the same time they were saying that they don’t sell member information, just cross promote. A few credit card companies did agree to stop sending me offers.
A month ago, I would have given them two stars for at least still being friendly, except for this recent episode. I have more credit history with them (bought a vehicle with a loan from them a few years ago) so I thought approval would be easier and I’d get a better rate than the CU I moved to a year ago (Internet Archive CU, who have been absolutely awesome, though they’re not part of shared branching yet). The first conversation (after applying online), all of my questions were ignored, and I was just «we need X to process your loan», as if I was at the DMV and she was only doing what she was legally required to and nothing more. This then turned into a phone tag nightmare. For the past week, I’ve gotten a voicemail every morning at absurdly early times that are just «Hello, this is so-​and-​so with US Federal, please call me back». For two days, I called every half an hour and never once got through. Leaving voice mails telling exactly when I would be in (not at 7:30am! coffee first!) had no effect: it was just «call me back». Asking her to suggest a time I could reach her had no effect… just another morning voice mail saying «call me back». I am so tired of getting the «your call is very important to us» voicemail and then having my «I’ll be in at this time» message ignored. No, my call is not important to you. Quit wasting my time.
tl;dr: Used to be good. but now, all of the disadvantages of a major bank and of a credit union with the benefits of neither.

Ten years ago I would have rated this CU with five stars, unfortunately over the last several years thier services have dramatically declined as they try and keep up with their competetors and stay ahead of hackers. Upgrades have resulted in poor customer service, very low customer appreciation and failing technology. Their interenet branch is more often crashed than working and if you question them about this, they respond by telling you to use the call center. As banking turns electronic USFCU has failed tremendously and with no remorse. Unless you are able and enjoy waiting in person or over the phone to do basic bank transfers, deposits and withdrawls I would take my business elsewhere.

First, as with other reviewers, I also like credit unions. I currently bank mostly with USAA and have had nothing but stellar experiences. Unfortunately, US Federal Credit Union leaves MUCH to be desired in the area of customer service and accessibility.
Recently I reopened a savings account to do a better job of not dipping into the account. Unfortunately, when an emergency arose and I tried to obtain a PIN in order to immediately access my account, I was told that I cannot change a PIN via phone or online. In order to get the PIN in 3 DAYS, it would cost me $ 25. I would then have to wait for 5 days to get the PIN sent via postal mail.
The customer service over the phone was intolerable. The agent could not be less helpful or sympathetic. I could literally sense the eye-​rolling through the phone and noted the audible sighs when I asked why the process was so difficult. He didn’t seem concerned that I intended to pull out a few thousand dollars in savings, which pretty much solidified my decision to open a savings account elsewhere.
Also, US FCU is FAR behind the times for online support and accessiblity. You can do very little online and the system crashes frequently. When you call to complete a transfer via the phone, again, you are told you have to ‘wait until the system comes back online’ because… wait for it… they cannot help you over the phone.
Fail.

I only go to this bank because sadly my car loan is thru a credit union and this place will process my payments for the far away credit union. They are pretty slow and don’t seem to really like their jobs.

Horrible, been a customer for over 20 years, they now charge $ 10 a month for not using your accounts!!! Cleaned my accounts out today.
