History
Established in 2005.
Actually, it all started with a bet… Kelly, who is also a 4th grade teacher, lost a bet while playing darts with her Principal. He won cookies as his prize, and shared them with the rest of the school staff. The secretaries shared them with other school secretaries, who ordered cookies and shared them with parents, who ordered cookies and shared them with… And the rest, as they say, is history.
After the 2004 holiday season ended with 450 dozen cookies done in their little kitchen, Jamie insisted they look for a professional kitchen to rent. Instead, they ended up finding a restaurant to buy.
After a lot of debating and research, and more than a little angst over the name, Kelly’s Bakery and Café opened it’s doors on Nov 16th, 2005.
Garnering favorable reviews in the local newspaper, Kelly’s immediately became a favorite of downtown Bloomington workers. Customers appreciate the good food, fast service, and friendly staff.
Meet the Business Owner
Kelly M.
Business Owner
Owners Kelly & Jamie Mathy both grew up around good food. Kelly learned to bake and cook from her mother Pam. Jamie also learned from his mom, mostly out of self defense so his older sister would NOT cook for the kids when mom & dad were at work. Jamie also spent 5 yeas as a cook in the Army National Guard cooking for 125 guys, which is why large caterings don’t scare him at all.
Each of them moved to Bloomington separately to attend ISU, only meeting long after graduation.
Kelly & Jamie have been honored with numerous awards in Bloomington-Normal:
Kelly was honored with a YWCA Women of Distinction Award.
Jamie was named Rotarian of the Year and a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow.
Together the couple of awarded the Jean Anderson Award for Downtown Improvement.
The couple own a house built in 1904 that they have been working on continuously for the entire duration of their marriage. They share the home with 2 cats, a dog, and 17 nieces and nephews who love to come play in the home.
