History
Established in 2002.
The Yoga Pioneers studio was the first (and is still the only dedicated) yoga school in Bloomington, Minnesota. The studio was opened in December, 2002 as a Bikram’s Yoga College of India affiliate by co-founders Herb Kearse and Laiki Huxorli, who continue to serve as its directors. In 2009, Herb and Laiki felt it was time to «declare independence,» and their vision of The Yoga Pioneers (TYP) came into being.
What makes TYP unique? Nowadays, «fitness» yoga — in many flavors –is widely available. At TYP, though, the focus is as much on the mind as the body. We recognize that yoga is way more than a trendy workout… it’s a centuries-old system of human development. Our mission: building a community that promotes and supports physical health, mental-emotional balance, and self-realization.
See you in class!
Meet the Business Owner
Herb and Laiki K.
Business Owner
Studio owner/directors Herb Kearse and Laiki Huxorli are transplanted New Yorkers, who moved to Bloomington, Minnesota in the summer of 2002 with a vision of bringing the healing benefits of yoga, meditation, and mindful living to the wonderful community they’d chosen as their new home.
A «close encounter» with the fragility of life was the turning point for the couple. Their New York City apartment was located just 1.5 miles from the World Trade Center, and if not for the serendipity of the NYC subway system, Laiki would have been underneath WTC #2 on the morning of September 11, 2001. Herb and Laiki realized then that it was time for them to relocate and start actively working on making the world a better place.
Herb and Laiki are certified Bikram Yoga instructors (BYCOI Teacher Training 2001), as well as lifelong students of All That Is.
