Specialties

Donuts made from scratch every day in small batches all throughout the morning! Vegan donuts, raised yeast donuts and old fashioned cake donuts with glazes and fillings also made from scratch using the best ingredients possible found close to home. We also have an espresso bar using a medium, lighter roast (more caffeine, less char) from Hailey, Idaho — second generation roaster, Maps Coffee. We have free wifi and improving the space and offerings every day.

History

Established in 2013.

Kevin and Angel Moran (co-​founders) started Guru Donuts from their home in Boise’s North end in 2012 — starting with «Donut Speakeasies» to test their artisan donuts among friends. After two seasons at the new Boise Farmer’s Market (11th & Grove) and wholesale to downtown coffee shops and retail outlets, Guru finally has a home in the Adelmann Building. Sharing a gorgeous remodel of the historic building with the Boise Fry Company is a dream come true. Come see the new space at 204 N. Captiol Blvd. every morning open 6am on weekdays and 8am on weekends and goes until 2pm or until the donuts are gone. The Guru crew plan to extend their hours including late nights on the weekends in the near future.

Business Owner

Angel’s love for food & commercials starting at a very young age. Born in Seoul, Korea into a family who owned a commercial modeling agency, she was surrounded by creativity. She was adopted by an American military family who traveled by highways and byways all throughout the United States. Angel fell in love with the food — mostly sweets– in every region. She met her husband/​business partner, Kevin, in Los Angeles where she was Director of Marketing in the music business. The two dreamed of finding a quaint community, leaving behind the large corporations and hustle of the big city. They found Boise in 2007. The couple decided to make some donuts the old fashioned way — from scratch using great ingredients found close to home. Selling fun flavored donuts weekly at the Boise Farmer’s Market, pop up shops and coffee shops around town, the loyal customer base grew until they raised and crowd sourced enough money to build the Guru Donuts location in the heart of downtown Boise.

Very disappointing. We thought this would be comparable to voo doo donuts, but the quality and taste were not very good. For the price (quite expensive), we will stay away in the future.

We were grabbing a burger next door at the Boise Fry Company and thought a donut would be a great way to finish off the meal. Wow, what great looking donuts with all kinds of cool toppings. We split a Curious George. It has banana, peanut butter and chocolate. The filling was about the size of a quarter and the donut itself was very dry. We both thought it looked much better than it tasted, especially since it cost $ 3.

I went here while visiting Boise on vacation. I had the root beer float donut, which I enjoyed. I liked this place so much I stopped back there before heading to the airport. The hipster berry donut is also delicious. There are plenty of unique flavors to keep people interested. If I lived here, I probably would visit regularly and have to buy larger pants to accommodate. If you’re ever in Boise, Guru is definitely worth a visit or ten.

I love everything about this place… Except the doughnuts. Particularly the yeast ones. It reminds me more of unsweetened bread, than a pastry. The cake doughnuts are better, but IMO not better enough to go through the hassle of trying to find a parking spot. The staff, the devour, the vibe… All are wonderful. But, I really just wanted a good doughnut.

I don’t understand the craze. Unless you work in the area the location is not convenient. The hipster vibe is very apparent and does have a cool atmosphere. Today was my 2nd time trying their donuts and I’m not impressed. I tried the Betty Boop, my mom had the sugar twist, and my daughter had the chocolate with sprinkles. Besides the toppings the donuts have NO flavor! They feel more dense than your typical donut but there truly is no taste. To pay close to $ 6 for 3 donuts I have high expectations.
The staff is very friendly so I can’t say anything there. What I don’t understand though is why the staff writes down your order? The time it takes to write you can pick it up and put it into a basket. Even after paying I still waited. While the wait wasn’t long it was an extra nonsense step.

I love the fact that they use quality ingredients to make the donuts here. I never was a fan of donuts, until I tried a Guru donut. They come out with some pretty fun combos and have great coffee to go along with your awesome donut. The customer service is always great here and it’s a perfect place to bring kids on a fun outing.

No complaints here. I’m comparing to Voodoo though, not a gigantic selection unfortunately. The flavors are unique though! I am getting the Margarita Madness and my wife is getting the Mama Loves Mango. My donut was $ 3 and the wife’s was $ 2. Good coffee selection as well. Comfortable atmosphere and good music. Will edit upon tasting!

5 stars for their costumer service! Love their dough… Just haven’t been a fan of the 3 donuts I’ve tried– Lemon Lavender/​strawberry rhubarb /​and some type of berry– I can’t remember the flavor… Husband loved their Lemon Lavender old fashion… I just thought it was a bit on the sweet side.

Im like Homer Simpson in here. salivating all over from these donuts. Mmmmm… donuts! I just did! Because the flavors are incredible. I had a raspberry lemonade donut. Very different flavors from what you’ll get anywhere else. Plus plus plus. The only reason I’m giving 4 instead of 5 stars is variety. I think there’s only gonna be 5 maybe 6 types that differ. I think there are 8 trays in the glass case, 2 will be classic, then the other special flavors. The line can run long sometimes as well. Remember this place when you have to run your Mr. Plow.

I walked in to get a donut before getting on the road to head back to Salt Lake. I wish I would have gone with more people so we could have ordered one of every donut and tried them all. They had unique flavors that were packed with flavor. I had the cranberry lime blood orange and basil donut and believe me – you want to try them. Especially the blood orange basil one.

Donuts and coffee doesn’t get better than this. I liked the Alice in Wonderland a lot, which was birthday cake confetti donut. I also liked the lemon poppy seed a lot, which was an old fashioned shape. The hipsterberry was actually delicious. It was raspberry flavored with lavender, which for a delicate flavor, actually came through. The caramel chai cake donut was also excellent in flavor. Open early and there’s also a donut happy hour (buy one get one — which makes for a better situation than day-​old donuts). They also serve Maps Coffee — drip coffee, cold brew, whole beans and more.

I’m more a fan of a traditional, yeasty, sweet donut. But damn if Guru hasn’t done a nice job of melding hipster donut craft with a tried and true donut taste.
I had the Hipsterberry and the Lemon Poppyseed cake donut. The berry icing on the Hipsterberry was flavorful and not overly sweet. It would have been perfect with a jelly filling. The lemon donut was very much like an old fashioned cake but with a slight lemon taste. I’d like a tangier lemon taste. But overall both were delicious.
After 3, it’s buy one get one. Which is super cool. But sometimes they run out of donuts well before then. So be warned.
Friendly service and clean, cool atmosphere. Guru is a go!

Love this place, but I’m going to have to drop it one star on account of the inconsistency of the coffee. The first time I went my latte was perfect and wonderfully sweet. The second time I went it was bitter and not good. The third time it was back to perfect and so on back and forth. When I get a good one it’s amazing so I keep playing roulette, hopefully they’ll train their «baristas» better!

You know, I’m pretty upset.
I’m upset because I tasted the best donuts I’ve ever had, and I live so far away from them that I do not know when I will have another. I dream about my experience here to this day.
My husband and I embarked on our honeymoon roadtrip to Las Vegas, and stopped in downtown Boise for breakfast around 6:00 AM. We ate down the street, and I wanted to grab something for the drive (one day earlier I had just placed in my first bodybuilding competition and after weeks of brutal dieting, I was dreaming of donuts). We walked to Guru Donuts, and I saw the great reviews they got on here.
We walked in, and it was dimly lit. The smell was so wonderful. Donuts and fresh coffee. Heaven? Definitely.
We picked a couple standard donuts, and then a Fluffernutter for good measure. They were all perfect. I am so happy to have finally tasted a REAL donut, where the dough is not overly sweet but the icing is… so much yes. I have yet to try a donut as delicious. Not only are the donuts great, but the coffee was phenomenal (even just a boring olé drip) and the people working were incredibly friendly. I cannot wait to have another excuse to end up in Boise just so I can eat more Guru.

Overrated. Yeast dough donuts are heavy, like fried bread. Overall taste and consistency is like a typical Winco or Albertson’s bakery donut… which is sub-​par. Maybe they are using all-​natural ingredients, or no dough conditioners, or whatever… but bottom line, the donut just doesn’t taste that good. (Contrast with Voodoo in Portland, whose donuts are also overpriced, but at least they are delicious.)
Flavors are inventive, which is cool, but the execution is just a miss. Maybe the vibe of the place itself is something of a draw, but there are much better donuts availalbe elsewhere in the area. Consider Country Donuts on Overland, DK in Meridian or Boise, and (believe it or not!) Rosauer’s on Eagle Road.
I won’t be back… not worth the calories.

On the wings of a particularly luscious, freshly frosted maple bar – I have found donut zen.
I have reached donut enlightenment.
And, my people?
Maple bars aren’t even my favorite sort of donut.
Guru Donuts pairs quality with culinary inventiveness. The result is delicious goodness that will leave you donut delighted to a level that will give you the inexplicable desire to stand up, throw your arms in the air, and shout Amen.
I mean… how about trying a little Chai Caramel donut? Or a sea salted chocolate bar? Or, my hipster darlings – how about a deep purple posh pretty known as the Hipsterberry? Want to kick it old school? They have one of the best old fashioned glazed cake donuts my taste buds have ever been introduced to.
It’ll spin you right round, baby, right round.
All that deliciousness and no preservatives or artificial colors. Even all those pretty little sprinkles are dyed with fruits and vegetables.
Well done, Guru. Well done.
And, hey – bring the kiddos! They even have a story time series on Tuesday mornings at 10am (and again at 10:30am). While the kids are fed and entertained, you can have a much needed cuppa and well deserved donut.
A feast for the eyes and gleeful felicity for the tastebuds – Guru is a supremely fine beginning to any day.

Fantastic staff — friendly, helpful, able to answer all my questions (yup, allergy fam), super sweet to my donut enthusiast kiddos.

These aren’t those supermarket or chain store donuts that will sugar bomb you. These are superb delights — pretty much the most magical donuts I’ve ever had. Been to a lot of those tourist hot spot donut shops etc and Guru blows them out of the water :)
Every month they unveil amazing new flavor combos so there’s always the option to try a new delicious donut… or TWO. We love The Great Pretender (outstanding maple bar with coconut-​bacon), the Peanut Buddah Mocha (so rich and delicious: peanut butter, chocolate, coffee… how can you go wrong?), and the Dark Chocolate bar with sea salt… They’ve also done a BANANA SPLIT DONUT that I can hardly wait til they bring back next year (it was heavenly!).
They also post updates on Facebook so if you follow them you can see when they post HAPPY HOUR. That’s right, sometimes they post all their donuts half price, til they are sold out. Also nice to know when they are sold out ahead of closing ;)
Eco-​conscious, book enthusiasts (Tuesday morning donuts and reading to kiddos lately!), community specials (special theme donuts & funds go to love our community? YES!), and vegan options that make my heart smile. I bet you can tell I’m head over heels for this place :) Go get some donuts!
