Advent’s location and proximity to Boston’s green spaces, museums, and cultural centers are extensions of our city campus, through field trips and outdoor exploration. Founded in 1961, Advent is a school for learners age four through Sixth Grade with excellent academics and an emphasis on diversity and social justice. Our school curriculum is thematic and inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach. We offer after-school enrichment to 6:00pm Monday through Friday for all students. Advent’s Summer Program «Dream | Design | Discover» is open to the public, and focuses on Design and Engineering for children aged 5 to 9 years old. The school hosts an Annual Collaborative Conference for educators from all disciplines and we welcome educators from across the globe to visit and observe in our classrooms during the academic year.
History
Established in 1961.
Social justice has been a part of The Advent School’s mission since its beginning. In 1961, as Boston dealt with interracial relations in the face of conflicting pressures, a group of concerned members of the Church of the Advent felt a critical need for a school to serve families of all races and economic backgrounds. Enrollment grew to seventy students by 1964, and by 1969 the School’s trustees had raised funds to purchase two brick-and-brownstone houses on Brimmer Street, a quiet, tree-lined street across from the church.
Although no religious affiliation remains, Advent’s curriculum emphasizes social justice themes related to civil rights, community building and environmental sustainability.
