An orchestra — convened in 2010 by Charles Ansbacher just to provide free classical concerts(donations happily accepted) at open venues and historical spots around the greater Boston area. Last nights performance was rained out of the Hatch Shell, and was held at the Church of Covenant instead — also a great venue, and frankly, preferably acoustically, if lacking in Esplanade views. Guest conductor Bruce Hangen conducted a sparkling performance of Haydn, Beethoveen and Prokofiev symphonies, and the place was packed with appreciative listeners. They were also fun to watch; The Guy Who Gives a Personal Standing Ovation after Every Piece; The Lady who Listens with Her Eyes Closed and Sways; and the Guy Who knows Everyone Walking in Late and Gesticulates Wildly to Open Seats, among others. I’d definitely make an effort to see one of their performances again — and.. it’s FREE.. .but considering the quality of the performance we were treated to, I’m happy to stick some money in the little envelope they gave me and send it in. Highly recommended.
