FrancesRay Jules is a hair, skin and nail salon designed to create an environment that is peaceful and pampering. We cater to both men and women who want to look and feel great. We offer a wide spectrum of hair services, including haircuts, conditioning treatments, blow-​drying, bridal hair styling, updos, partial updos, perms, relaxers, weaves, straightening, KeraSmooth Treatment, extensions and coloring. We have color specialists on staff, and our owner is an experienced color educator.

In addition to hair styling, we also offer a full range of skin and nail services. This includes professional makeup application, makeup class, full-​body waxing, facials, peels, foot treatments, body wraps, manicures, pedicures, soaks and scrubs. If you would like to combine some of these services, make sure to check out our special packages. We have packages that are tailored for different occasions, like our Bridal Package, Girls Day Out Package or our Session of Caring for men.

History

Established in 2001.

FrancesRay Jules is named after the owner Ben’s mother, father and godchild. When the salon was first opened, there were only four styling stations and a nail technician tucked away in the loft, but we were determined to offer quality service in a laid-​back, mom-​and-​pop environment. After opening a second location on Canal Street in 2001, we moved the original location moved to Portland Street. This move allowed us to grow from just four styling stations to six, and we were able to add a color bar, a larger nail area, a full skin care and waxing setup, massage and body treatments. We were also able to to begin launching our own Jules Makeup line.

From the start, our goal has been to provide quality service with individual care. Each of our stylists, artists and technicians are professionally trained in their field to ensure the best quality service.

As the owner of FrancesRay Jules Salon, Ben has over 20 years of experience in the beauty Industry. He has an impressive work history, working as a stylist at Judy Jetson, Inc., Director of Elizabeth Arden Salon at Saks Fifth Avenue and as a stylist at Man in the Moon Salon. Ben is currently a Wella Brand Educator for New England. He is also busy working with Platinum Wedding magazine as Editorial Hair Stylist. Ben and his team have worked hard sponsoring Cut-​a-​thons, Silent auctions and fashion events supporting local charities. He takes pride in providing in-​salon and outside training for his staff, making sure that all stylists train directly with him. His staff is offered opportunities to participate in innovative classes to make sure they are on top of all of the latest trends and techniques.

Bought a mani/​pedi on Groupon and had a great experience. The location is perfect for me, near North Station. They were very friendly at the front desk. I can’t remember the girl’s name that did my nails but she was friendly and did a good job. The pedicure chairs are comfortable and they offer you tea or coffee. Laid back, read some magazines and relaxed. Didn’t love the shape she cut my toenails but that’s okay. Lots of colors to choose from, too. The spa pedicure was great. Scrubs and lotions and creams and serums, oh my! I felt super pampered and loved all the scented scrubs and bubble bath things. Moved to manicure and same deal: lots of wonderful lotions and colors to choose from. It was overall a great experience and, to my surprise, on the way out they handed me a holiday card and a bunch of coupons. What a nice surprise and treat! I’ll definitely be going back, at least for my nails and maybe my hair!

There was some major confusion about the Groupon that I bought and I ended up paying for my haircut instead of using the Groupon that I purchased. Which is fine, whatever I should’ve just rescheduled. Not the issue here.
When I paid, gratuity was cash only. So I told the receptionist that I would run next door to get some cash because I forgot to stop and get some on my way in. I thought it was more important to be on time for my appointment then stop to get cash when I knew I could do it right after. She said I could put the tip on the card, so I did. Then when I was leaving some other stylist just stood at the front desk and mad dogged me the whole time I was putting my coat on. Like I mean… standing there with his arms cross just glaring at me.
And right as I was leaving he said some incredibly rude remark about needing to get cash for their tip. He didn’t even cut my hair… and if he did…
FRJ Salon, are you serious? You allow your employees to act that way towards customers?
It’s unfortunate because the Groupon I bought is not actually refundable (like I was told it was), and I was planning on coming back in to redeem it. Plus the guy who cut my hair was super nice and really helpful.
But, I will never come back here. I’d rather just waste the $ 35 I spent on the Groupon, if the stylists think that it’s acceptable treat their patrons that way.

Very disappointed in what I expected to be a great find.
The aesthetician’s breath was nauseating.
She didn’t once check with me to see if the cloths she was using were too hot.
The towel wrap they gave me to wear was so old and the elastic was worn out that I had to hold it up.
The radio used to play music kept skipping so much that after 10 minutes or so she just turned it off.
Meh about the cleaning of pores — I book an appointment with a professional for more than just a few creams slathered on my face.

I’ve come in the past 3 years or so on previous Groupon deals for haircuts and highlights, but none have convinced me enough to stay until now. I saw Richard for the first time last May the day right before my college graduation, and he left me with beautiful multi-​tonal full highlights and full, bouncy hair! The *great* thing about Frances Ray Jules is that they offer a lock-​in price for any service you’ve received on a deal. I’m good to get full highlights, haircut, and blow-​dry for $ 98 the whole year! He also offered me a lock-​in price for a $ 99 Xpress Keratin Blowout, which he recommended as a restorative treatment for my heavily highlighted hair.
The second time I most recently came in, I decided to get a full Balayage (free hand/​painted) highlight, of which I was quoted $ 140 including wash, cut, and blow-​dry, as well as the Xpress Keratin blowout/​treatment. I got nothing but the best from Richard: he was prompt, had a great attitude all throughout, and it was nice also having some complementary tea and snacks during my services. The salon is incredibly easy to reach as well, being next to the orange and green line by North Station. They also seem to have great packages re: waxing, facials, and mani/​pedis! I think I’ve found my mainstay salon in Boston!

My friend and I bought a groupon for the shellac mani and regular pedi so we can prepare for graduation. I booked the appointments for the day before graduation. I got a call a couple of hours later from telling me that a girl called out sick and asked me to move the date which I did not want to. They were able to reschedule for me which I really appreciate. My own mani and pedi went well. However, my friend’s shellac mani did not. A third layer was offered by the tech because the color was not opaque enough. The 3rd layer made everything super bubbly and the nail polish was obviously uneven. She requested for her nails to be redone because they should have done a better job. The techs told her that she would need to pay another $ 20 to have it removed and redone. We refused because it was their fault. They finally agreed after a while. While she was waiting for her nails to be redone, the owner stepped out, pointed his finger at her, and stated «you should let people do their jobs and pay the $ 20». He did not introduce himself or anything. His attitude was horrible because he yelled at my friend first before even getting the story straight because it was his tech who offered the 3rd layer. He later apologized but it was not how he should have approached the situation. They tried to do the shellac nails again but it just didn’t work out. She just asked to have everything removed. The owner offered to not charge her this time. While waiting I was offered a offer that locks the rate for my mani and pedi for the next year but I will not be coming back to this establishment.

Oops you did it again.
Just as I suspected, a response with more excuses… and ignorance. I get my hair done at a salon twice a week because I can. If I wanted to do my own hair then I would but fortunately I can rely on other competent stylists at other salons who know how to do a proper blow out. As for the rest of the response, it just further portrays how unprofessional you are, Frances Ray Jules Salon. Do you believe you should not be held accountable for bad service? Calling you out on your incompetence is the whole point of reviews and it’s not bullying. Stop making excuses!

Wonderful service, the employees are super friendly and every haircut that I’ve had has come out wonderfully! I found this place originally with a groupon and was skeptical, but I was happily surprised by the awesome experience. This is my new go to place and is still somewhat of a hidden gem so I never have trouble booking an appointment. My groupon rate was locked in for a year! Such a great cut for an unbelievable price. I highly recommend this salon.

had travel zoo deal — had $ 89 paid for a voucher I bought last year. Andrea did classic mani/​pedi. No massage chair, Andrea was very sweet, polish put on so thick on hands it never dried properly and was smudged badly hours later. Man at the front desk finally agreed to allow me to use the remaining credit for a product after arguing with me about the expectation that I would use entire value in one visit, even though I explained over the phone that I had a voucher and was planning to use the credit during my visit. Man was extremely unpleasant, I will not return.

Similar to Kat, I went in for a Shellac Mani and Pedi. Bought a deal on Groupon.
DO NOT GO HERE FOR MANI/​PEDI SERVICES. This was absolutely the worst manicure I’ve gotten, and feel foolish that I spent the $ 40 trying to save money on my bimonthly ritual gel. I’m extremely unsatisfied and fear coming back to even try to get my hair done here.
Last Thursday I arrived, the receptionist had me sit down and offered me water or tea. after 5 minutes, I was sent to the back where they had sofa chairs in which you were able to sit and get a non-​traditional pedicure. I didn’t think too much of it, until i saw her struggle to file my nails and paint within my toenails. They were literally not the same shape, the nail polish was everywhere and I was mortified. At that point, I should have literally walked out, BUT somehow, I convinced myself that maybe just maybe nails were her forte.
Absolutely not, I had to ask her to paint my whole fingernail and she kept going over the edge. I should have screamed, but adults don’t behave that way, I let her finish and left knowing that I will never be coming back. I mean seriously, I think the girl needs glasses. She was nice, pleasant, and respectful. Her work just does not cut it.

My hair was looking rough, and after spotting the very affordable Groupon deal, I decided to try it, despite the questionable reviews. I’m glad I did! Tiffany was friendly and asked me questions about what I was looking for. After chatting for a bit, we decided to take the plunge and chop by hair into a pixie. It looks really cute and I’ve gotten a lot of compliments. They also lock you into your groupon rate for a year, which is a great perk. Nice salon in a great location. I will be back!

I had an awful experience at Jules Salon today, August 21st, when I was coming to cut my hair. Co-​owner of the place Mr. Ben Mitrano interrupted my conversation with hairstylist and called me stupid, thinking that I don’t understand what is he saying. This is not a customer service I expected and I wont come back.
The owner of the business has negative attitude.

This salon does not understand the first thing about customer service. They merely make excuses for customer concerns, just as they do in response to every negative review on this site. The managers here convey an attitude of «it is how it is» and even went so far as to tell me they «apologize but we really don’t have to apologize.» No time is spent trying to understand customer concerns, to them, policy over-​rules customer satisfaction.
I can’t speak to how the actual services here were, as I never made it to the salon, nor will I in the future. I can easily take my business elsewhere, where I know my money and time is valued. Bottom line, their communication and attitude is unprofessional and not worth my time or money, nor is it worth yours!

This review is only for manicure.
I decided to try out this place last Friday because I was in the area and did not want to go too far. I have the equipment to do gel nails at home but wanted to relax and let the professionals handled my nails. When I walked in, the gentleman was very friendly and nice. I think he’s also the hairstylist. I told him I want Shellac tips. He had Jordan to help me. While I waited, he offered me water or coffee. Up until this point, my experience was very pleasant.
Then, Jordan came and took me to the back. I explained to her what I wanted and she said she could do a color french tips with Shellac. My doubt started when I noticed she did not have any professional tools. I had everything she had on the table minus one clipper. She was very nice but certainly not very detailed. I had to point out to her that there was a bubble under one of my nails and the tips did not come out very straight. There were holes in the top coat. I could have done a better job at home.
Even worse, the shellac started to chip the NEXT day. Four of my nails either have chipped or peeled of partially by today. It’s not even a week yet.
And I realized I did not see a nail technician license issued by the Mass. State Board of Cosmetology displayed anywhere.
Their pricing is not too bad. They offer a 20% first time discount and a 15% discount if you work or live in the neighborhood.
However, I don’t think I will ever go back for their nails service and would not recommend anyone to.

Mixed review… very torn about this place.
I went in with a TravelZoo deal for a mani-​pedi, which was a great price ($ 25). Had some difficulty getting an appointment — tried 3 or 4 times — but ultimately got in at the time I was looking for. Customer service was great, friendly staff & nice, clean salon. As previous Unilocalers mentioned, if you purchase a deal through another site, they honor the deal price for 1 year which is a nice perk and a great way to encourage repeat business.
That being said, the pedicure experience was quite nice! Comfy recliner, old-​fashioned wooden barrel filled with warm suds and a lot of attention paid to the feet.
Manicure experience was fine, pretty standard. My issue here is with the paint job. Now I have short nails — I’m not sure if that makes a mani more difficult? But I did not get a clean line at my cuticles and there was errant paint on my fingertips. I could probably live with that, if it weren’t for the fact that the very next day, the polish on one thumb practically fell off in one sheet, as if it were a press-​on nail. This was OPI polish by the way, not some cheap brand. The following day, two more nails followed suit and so on and so forth. I expect to get AT LEAST 5 days out of a regular manicure. One, two days is UNacceptable.
And the cherry on top? Now my toe nail polish is coming off. It’s been 5 days. Pedicures typically last me two weeks with minimal chips.
Proceed with caution.

LOCATION:
Really convenient — It is across the street from North Station (main) Causeway Street entrance. If you drive, there’s plenty of government center garages nearby, too.
CUSTOMER SERVICE:
Everyone was very friendly. It was sort of annoying that the two times i called (during business hours), it went to voicemail. The calls were returned within a few hours hours, but I was surprised to see someone at the front desk when I came in…
HAIRCUT & BLOWDRY:
I gave Rich (co-​owner) a bunch of pictures that were all vaguely similar, and he used them, asked me what else I wanted, and then repeated it before he started cutting, which was definitely appreciated.
He basically cut a look that was similar and worked well with my frame. He styled it SO WELL with just a round brush and blowdryer. He gave me tips throughout the appointment about how I can style my hair.
It’s been a week since my haircut, and I really like it. I don’t love it as much as it looked when he styled it — but certainly is still really great.
PRICE:
I really appreciated that the salon gave me a“Lock in Price” for the rest of the year — so if I return, I will only be paying my Groupon price. I’m really not too sure if I would return if I was paying $ 65, but definitely will for that lowered price.
SUMMARY:
I’m definitely satisfied! I’d return again, and I’d recommend Rich!

I feel bad that there are some mixed reviews of this salon: I was a bit nervous going in after I purchased a Bloomspot a while back and reading them, but was so happy with the services this past weekend that I just wanted to come on and let everyone know.
I got a signature facial from Stephanie, and she was great. I got the full services (massage, peel, etc.) — super relaxing, Stephanie was very knowledgeable, and my skin felt amazing afterwards. I also found the staff also was super friendly from my last-​minute appointment booking (I realized my deal expired that morning — and they took me that afternoon) to walking in the door. I thought they were very attentive.
My one recommendation would be that it would be nice to have soothing music playing during the facial — the door is near the salon, so I could hear everything going on outside, so it was tough initially to relax (but I did :) It’s such a minor detail that I’ve seen at other salons, but I think could make a huge difference.
So I’m looking forward to taking advantage of my next facial, and grabbing the at-​home face care kit she recommended next time I’m in!

I always have a fantastic experience here. A Groupon deal brought me here in the first place a couple years back and I haven’t gone anywhere else to get my haircut ever since! Alex is the only person that can cut my bangs and hair the way I like it. She always offers great advice on how to style and which products to use for my hair.
The easy accessibility to the T is also very much appreciated. I even bought a bracelet here because usually nothing fits my tiny wrists. They have so many products to chose from, including makeup, jewelry, etc. All around, a very fun place to get your hair done where you leave feeling like a million bucks every time! :)

I had to catch a flight one evening and stopped in hoping I could get a cut before leaving town. Richard wasn’t there but one of the ladies took me right away!
Since I had parked and just ran in to see if there was an opening in their schedule I hadn’t put money in the meter. While I was getting my (fabulous) haircut, another employee ran out to put money in my parking meter. Awesome!
