Gaslight

We came here for a Saturday brunch and were blown away. First of all, we need to talk about how cute the ambiance and interior is at this French Brasserie! There’s a classic, vintage feel that’s very comfortable to dine in, from the wood seats to the tiled walls, ceilings, and floors. Maybe I’ve been watching too much Boardwalk Empire lately, but it reminded me of a place gangsters would eat, in the coolest way possible.
The food itself at Gaslight is crazytown. It was one of those meals where we both just kept talking about how blown away we were! The prices were shockingly reasonable too — less than $ 20 each for fab food, great atmosphere and great service. Our waiter chatted with us when he found out we were also from California, gave us an update on our order and it’s queue in the kitchen, and was knowledgeable about gluten free options when I inquired about them. Plus, our waters were always filled to the brim no matter how hard we tried to drink it all!
I ordered the Berkshire Pork Hache — best decision ever made. It came with confit pork, crispy potatoes, chili sauce verte, and two fried eggs, AKA protein central! The ingredients came out in patty form, cooked to perfection and filled with flavor. I scarfed it down in about 10 seconds.
For even more flavor, the Poached Eggs a la Bearnaise is an excellent choice. With sauteed kale, caramelized onions, and plenty of garlic, this egg dish is one to savor and enjoy!
In case it wasn’t clear enough, I can’t recommend Gaslight enough! Amazing food, great service, and fun atmosphere. What more could a diner want in a meal? There’s also outdoor seating which looked inviting for the hotter summer months.

I’ve been here a couple of times and have always had a solid 4 star experience. They have a great $ 30 3-​course meals Mon-​Fri between 5−6pm.
Unfortunately, my experience yesterday was just OK. Our waitress, Pam, was super nice. But 20 mins into our dining experience, EVERYTHING was SO slow, mainly our waitress. I literally had to turn my head multiple times trying to find out waitress. I asked for olive oil and she forgot, so I had to ask another person.
The food was decent. We ordered the Steak Frites. I just wish that she didn’t take forever to get our orders during our meal, and was there when we needed something.

Finally got back here after 3 years and was impressed. Juliana was one of the best servers I’ve had in while. The food was excellent: solid tuna tartare, ridiculously good Kale salad (great reco from Juliana), Moules Frites was very good and Steak Frites were ok. Chocolate Beignets to close out the meal were fantastic.
Need to put this back in my rotation.

Came here last night and it was pretty packed! Make sure you make reservations. Ordered the Escargots ($ 8.75) and Steak Tartare with crostini and aioli ($ 12.25) for the appetizers. Not a fan of escargots in general (think it’s a texture and mentality thing for me — I have tried it though!) but it smelled delicious! The rest of my party enjoyed it. I loved the steak tartare. It was the perfect amount for sharing. For my main I got the Roasted Cod Poelee ($ 23.75) with mussels, clams, oysters, chorizo. This beautiful combo was immersed in sauce americaine (creamy tomato consistency). I really liked the sauce and it’s like they read my mind because they already put some cut up hard baguette in the broth. Mussels and clams were a little small but enough to satisfy the palate. Would definitely recommend this dish.
I would say a bonus point for Gaslight would be the free parking. There’s a parking lot with an attendant. Ticket is validated for free parking :) Very rare in the South End area.

My husband and I popped in here at 10:30am on a Sunday, without reservations, and grabbed a seat at the bar. I think we timed it just right because by the time we left the bar had gone from mostly open to entirely full.
The spot is cute and well maintained. The bartender was friendly. The Bloody’s were amazing & the meal was good! I had the Tasso Ham Tartine (scrambled eggs w ham) and my husband the Croque Madame. We had just gotten off a flight and this was our first meal and we were really relieved to have had such a great experience.

That booze in the signature cocktail was strong.
Anyways our experience here was nothing short of amazing. We had the caracoles which was decent, fresh oysters and clams, French Union soup, beef tartare (I expected it to be completely raw which wasn’t the case. It was just okay in my opinion) and the incredible cod poêlée.
Will definitely go back to other dishes.

I’ve been to Gaslight before a few months ago with a group of girlfriends and I remember having attentive service and everyone enjoyed their meals so I decided it would be fun to come with my boyfriend for a birthday celebration after craving French food!
The interior is adorable and super French bistro feel and spacious enough where you can come with larger groups, the prices are decent with a fair amount of food, and the service is great. Since I had mentioned it was my birthday when I made the reservation, they were super sweet and gave me a birthday card signed by the staff when I was seated. They had specials between 5−6pm for a 3-​course dinner for $ 30 which I thought was a nice option as well.
We ended up getting a bottle of wine, the foie gras, escargots, bar steak, the Friday special bass, and for dessert, espresso, crème brûlée, and chocolate beignets (with a candle for my birthday, they really take birthdays seriously but thank god no one sang to me haha) Everything was spot on and equally amazing. We went a bit crazy but there were so many great options on the menu along with specials of the day. I previously got the duck confit the last time I came and that was tender and flavorful too.
Definitely coming again when I’m craving French food. ALSO, warm baguettes served at the start of the meal. Why can’t all restaurants serve warm, toasty (ha) bread?!

Update: The owner of the restaurant reached out to me shortly after posting this review and mailed me a gift certificate to try it out again. I haven’t gotten a chance to yet, but I will try to do so soon! However, I just wanted to say how impressed I am by their customer service.

Gaslight is one of those restaurants where it makes you think it’s going to be better than it turns out to be. The menu reads like a dream. Everything sounds so delicious until you eat it and you end up with a disappointing feeling of «meh it’s okay I guess.»
Indicative of my entire trip to Boston, the food here was disappointing. We tried the steak tartare (I’ve had way better beef tartare elsewhere, chicken and porkchop. My porkchop was good aside from my first few bites feeling overwhelmingly salty. Bae’s chicken though… I tried a bite and felt so bad that she had ordered it so enthusiastically. It was borderline dry and there was no good taste to it. It’s definitely one of those dishes that you shouldn’t get it you’re on the fence to jump off a cliff. It will definitely depress you further and make the decision easier.
Our dinner hosts had the bar steak and duck. The duck tasted great, but the bar steak looked pitiful. I debated getting it originally and I’m glad I didn’t.
Dessert was okay. My lady loves her molten chocolate cakes. I cringe every time I see them on a menu, but to appease her, we got it. It was dry and she got a bite of cold «molten» chocolate. Our dinner hosts got a lemon dessert and it was perfect.
The only standout at dinner was the cocktail. We all got the Ma Vie En Rose. It was by far my favorite part of the meal. The service was also really good. I didn’t quite catch our server’s name, but he was excellent.

We went during restaurant week. I had been looking forward to the duck confit all week to learn that that was not on the menu. On the dine Boston/​restaurant week menu was actually bits and pieces of the duck confit with the gnocchi pasta. So instead of ordering from the restaurant week menu, I ordered the duck confit. It was flavorful but it was definitely too dry. I couldn’t finish the dish and ended up switching with my partner. He ordered the artic char. The artic char had a nice crispy skin and the fish was cooked great compared to the duck confit. The artic char was from the restaurant week menu so we finished off the dinner with a strawberry blonde cake. The cake was also very dry and a very rough consistency. We did not finish that dessert.
Room/​setting was too dark for a dinner service. Could barely see my partner and the food we were eating. Service was ok. Our server seemed frustrated or distracted with something else all night. Waters were not refilled until the end when we were about to get dessert. Overall, I will never go to Gaslight again and would not recommend it to any of my friends. You could get more for your money’s worth elsewhere. Because of my experience here, I don’t think I will be trying Gaslight’s sister restaurants either.

Came here for an after work drink. The place is interestingly decorated, in a good way and the vibes are good. It was maybe a little after 5 and there were a decent number of people enjoying the bar. The windows let the sun shine up the place beautifully and service was solid.
Drank the Juneau (gin, yellow chartreuse, orange bitters) — strong on the gin which I really liked, but I thought there had to be honey in the drink bc it was really sweet — too sweet unfortunately
I’d hesitate coming here for cocktails (there are so many consistently great places in the south end like gallows or franklin café!), but I would be open to coming back and eating

I came here on a Sunday night and it was packed. But for good reason! Gaslight had some amazing food. My only complaint is that service was a little slow. We got our appetizers before we got our drinks (it was like a 25 minute wait). When we ordered our second round of drinks during the meal, they didn’t bring them until they brought the desserts out.
For appetizers we got tuna tartare and the French onion soup. The tartare was pretty good. It tasted very fresh. The French onion soup was good too. It was topped off with a LOT of cheese. Maybe you’re not into that, but I certainly was.
For the main course I got the roasted swordfish and it was probably the best cooked swordfish I’ve had. A lot of places tend to over cook swordfish so it’s really dry but Gaslight had it perfectly done. The stewed chickpeas it came with were really good too.
I got the coconut crème cake for dessert and it was amazing! All the desserts looked really good but I’m a sucker for anything coconut flavored.
I highly recommend this place! I will definitely be back

Amazing brunch deal — choice of Oj/​grapefruit juice, choice of tea/​coffee, sweet breakfast bar and 1 of 4 entrée options — all for $ 11.95! Side of smoked ham was also delicious and great for sharing amongst the table since the savory options are largely vegetarian for the prix fixe. Perfect portion sizes and a nice upscale gastropub ambiance. After eating here, you’ll be energized to peruse SOWA for all its glory.

I came to gaslight on a friend’s birthday with a bunch of others and we all had a great time. The service was a little slow, but for a large group, that’s too be expected.
I ordered a steamroller, but found that the sweet flavors were overpowered by the IPA. Switched over to goose island when I finished that.
As far as food, I ordered the boeuf bourguignon. I expected a stew on my plate when it arrived, but it turned out to be a perfectly braised piece of beef, tender and flavorful. The celeriac purée and spinach worked really well with the beef, but the plate wasn’t as full as I had imagined. That said, I definitely don’t regret the decision as the flavors were amazing. I also had some of my friend’s Berkshire pork chops and the chops were wonderful too. Very tender and juicy.
Would recommend this for dinner. I’m already planning to come back for brunch.

There’s probably little I could say about Gaslight that 1421 other Unilocalers haven’t already, and my experience was nothing remarkable, so this review will likely be lost in the sands of time.
Oh well.
The French onion soup was serviceable, but didn’t make my eyes roll back in my head like the best versions of this bistro classic do. My scallop entrée was much tastier, but the portion size was positively anemic. After mentioning this to the waitress who recommended it to me, however, the restaurant was happy to take it off the bill. I wish I knew my waitress’ name, as she was the highlight of our meal. Fun and personable without being intrusive, she achieved the right balance of surprise and subtlety that my meal was lacking.

My boyfriend and I went to Gaslight together on a Friday night. We specifically went on Friday because they have Lobster Gnocchi on Fridays. WOW was the Lobster Gnocchi amazing! For an appetizer we got Tuna Tartare, which was also pretty good.
It was extremely busy when we went (no surprise, like I said it was Friday night) and it might have been the table we were seated at, but we felt squished and on top of the table behind us. We were at a very small table for two. The tables around us seemed to have more space. This definitely affected our experience. The restaurant was also quite loud. There was a fairly large party seated on the other side of us. It was hard to have an intimate dinner with a squished table and high noise level.
Overall, I really enjoyed the food at Gaslight. I want to come back for that amazing Lobster Gnocchi (highly recommend it). It’s too bad they only have it on Fridays as I would love to come when it is less crowded. I hope the next Friday I decide to go to Gaslight I have a better experience with seating/​noise level.

Gaslight is the perfect place for date night — nice ambience, delicious food, and great service. My boyfriend and I ordered:
— Steak Frites
— Scallops + Polenta
— Chocolate Beignets
— Gâteau aux Pomme (Apple Cake)
We enjoyed every bite of our entrees (especially the scallops!), but we probably wouldn’t order the chocolate beignets or apple cake again. The beignets were a bit dry and too dense for our liking, and the apple cake was just not very memorable.

I went in with such high expectations, but they were crushed due to sub-​par service. I’m not sure if our waitress was in training, but she clearly had her head somewhere else during the evening. First off, it took about 20 minutes for her to come around to take our order. During our whole dining experience, she was nowhere to be found. I know I drink a lot of water, but it can’t be that difficult to refill my cup at least once. I ended up having to flag down another waiter to help quench my thirst. At the end of the meal, I also had to track down a different waiter for the check because our lady of the night was still missing.
As for the food, it was average and nothing stood out. Steak frites tasted as expected and the meat was actually chewier than I’d like; fries were perfectly crisp though. My husband ordered the special of the day, Choucroute Garnie, which consisted of duck confit, frankfurter, and garlic sausage on a large bed of sauerkraut. I found the whole dish kind of salty but did enjoy the tender texture of the duck confit.
The saving grace of this restaurant was its romantic, dim atmosphere and lovely European-​like ambiance. I’d come back to try their prix fixe dinner because it seems like a great deal but won’t be rushing back anytime soon.

After my last review they reached out and were very nice. I still have to respond to that but I decided on a whim to go there for dinner just to see and we had a wonderful time. Service was good and food was great. The only trouble I ever had was brunch outside so I hope it is better than last year but the food was tasty so I am updating my review.

I was really looking forward to having dinner at Gaslight as it has a pretty extensive menu and I love French food. Our intention for going was just to sample a lot of appetizers. We decided to share the escargot, steak tartare, french onion soup, and foie gras pâté. In my opinion, everything was good but a little underwhelming.
Escargot: Flavor was alright — can’t really go wrong with garlic, butter, and parsley, but it wasn’t as plump and juicy as I was expecting. I like dipping bread into the remaining butter at the bottom but there was hardly any after taking the escargot out.
Steak tartare: Not very rich and more like a spread than small chunks of beef. I prefer the steak tartare at the Butcher Shop.
French onion soup: Tasty with lots of melted cheese — probably my most favorite dish of the night
Foie gras pâté: Quite good but wouldn’t go back for it
Overall, Gaslight is a great date restaurant with pretty good service and lots of free bread, but it wouldn’t be my go to restaurant.

Really 4.5 stars. The food, service, and ambiance were all great. Free parking is a big plus as well. We made reservations online, were greeted very politely by the parking attendant, seated by the hosts in a reasonable time, served by a friendly waitress, drank well-​made cocktails, and enjoyed appetizers (kimchi octopus special was good, not too spicy) and entrees (grouper special was light and tasty) with a bottle of wine. The only issue is the tight seating; the couple next to us were practically sharing tables with us. Well, they had shifted their table slightly so one of them could squeeze back into their seat. Even without the shift the tables in the section we were in are spaced too closely. The other areas in the restaurant seemd to have better table spacing. We look forward to returning and trying their other dishes.

We ended up here for dinner on a Friday night after attending a nearby art opening when my wife decided it was too cold to walk up to Chinatown. I was a bit leery because it seems in most of these South End bistros it’s tough to get out of them for less than $ 100 even for a light, casual meal and a couple of drinks.
It was bustling and full around 7 p.m. but luckily the host was able to seat us right away at a high top table in the bar. We had pregamed with some wine at the gallery opening so my wife just had a soft drink, but being a craft cocktail nut I had to try the Ma Vie En Rose, a potent and spicy blend of thyme-​infused vodka, grapefruit liqueur, and lemon, topped with a sprig of fresh thyme.
My wife got the bar steak ($ 25.75), a tender skirt steak covered in caramelized onions with nice sauteed porcini mushrooms that she had substituted for frites. She gave it a big thumbs up. I stayed true to my general rule that if there’s fresh pasta on a menu, that’s what I order. The house-​made tagliatelle ($ 19.50) was just a wee bit over al dente, but the light cream sauce of smoked lamb belly (that was a first, since smoked pork belly seems all the rage lately), pears, and hazelnuts.
A small, fresh, very toothsome baguette was curiously served in a paper bag with some butter on the side to accompany our meals.
The Gaslight interior is very authentically tarted up to look like a Parisian bistro, with low lighting, subway tiles lining the walls, and every sign in French. The noise level was medium to loud, with a curious sound track that was heavy on 70s American R&B. Service was brisk, efficient, and knowledgeable.
Food and drink quality was very good, but there seems to be so many of these type of corporate restaurants now in downtown Boston that they’re starting to blur for me, and the experience didn’t feel unique enough that I would likely make this a destination for another visit. But the total bill was about $ 70 with tip, and they validated our parking, so we got out for considerably less than a C-​note — mission accomplished.

This is always a go to brunch spot because of the free parking and the usually spot on food. I ordered from the brunch pri-​fixe and got the vanilla french toast. The french toast itself felt a bit dry, not sure if it was sitting in an oven or something while the rest of the dishes for my party was being worked on and it dried out.
I would come back again but stick to the savory brunch dishes.

I’ve typically been to Gaslight for brunch (though their dinner looks excellent). While it’s not in the most convenient location, the ability to make reservations and free parking lot is a huge draw.
Excellent cocktails, nice brunch options (I find the savory brunch items tend to be slightly better than the sweet, which is surprising for a French-​inspired restaurant), and beautiful space. The breakfast prix-​fixe often sounds alluring but I find the normal menu items better.
I always come away thinking the service could be slightly better; i.e., either service is slow or the host/​servers are the warmest and they definitely give off a sorority girl vibe.

I.LOVE.THIS.PLACE. Super cute interior that lets me traverse back in time. Parking is FREE in the shared BSC lot with validation. We usually make a reservation on Open Table and head over for brunch. For $ 12 on the prix fixe menu, it starts you off with a cup of coffee or tea and a piece of shortbread with raspberry jam. For mains, you can grab a fresh glass of OJ or grapefruit juice and have your pick of four dishes — two types of omelets, scrambled eggs, or french toast. I’m more of a savory fan and found the french toast with sautéed apples a bit too sweet. The omelet with potatoes and carmelized onions was delicious on the other hand.
Service is always good though we always happen to sit in a similar section and have the same server.
So good of a deal that in my five visits, have only made it for brunch!

I guess my impression of slow service from my last visit wasn’t just me being impatient. We waited over half an hour to order anything, the fastest drink to come out was a tea that took an hour, and we had to keep giving reminders about various parts of our order throughout the meal. All in all, it took almost 3 hours for what should have been an hour and a half meal.
The food itself also wasn’t as amazing as I remembered. Still good, but nothing I’d call home to rave about. My order also felt a bit cooled, as if it’d been sitting out for a little bit.
Dessert satisfied as always (we got the apple cake again, along with the coconut cream pie and chocolate mousse), but it’d be a major red flag if dessert did not.

I Love this place! I’ve had brunch and dinner here, and I wasn’t disappointed. The prix fixe dinner ($ 30 from 5−6pm every night) includes an appetizer, main entrée, and dessert. You have plenty of options to choose from for each course, and it is very filling. I usually don’t care for french onion soup, but this french onion soup with truffled beef shortrib was delicious! The steak frites was cooked to perfection and paired with a maÎtre d’hotel butter (blend of butter, lemon juice, parsley, and seasonings). The crème brûlée was my favorite!

I ate dinner there recently with 4 friends. The restaurant overall has a lovely ambience.
I had a croque monsieur which was just as amazing as the one I had in France, and it came with both a side salad and fries.
I honestly regret not getting a dessert since I tried each of my friends’ desserts and they were delicious. I especially loved the crème brûlée.
Overall the service was friendly and attentive, and I look forward to going back to try something else. I was late meeting my friends thanks to Über and the server made sure that my entrée was ready to come out with my friends’ entrees. Next time I think I will get the price fixe since for 29.95 you can get 3 courses.

3.5 stars overall: 3 star cuisine, 4 star ambiance, 4 star service.
Steak tartare was delicious except for the fully done egg perched on top (!) which was an odd sight indeed — full egg white covering the tartare, instead of a glistening yolk. Nonetheless, the tartare itself was a great starter.
Swordfish stole the show — perfectly done. fresh, juicy, flavorful. Would definitely return for this.
Duck confit was average, which I had really wanted to be incredible. Not terribly tender, if anything on the overcooked side. Paired with a farro-​like side that was doused in a super salty sauce.
Steak frites were tasty but nothing to write home about.
Friend devoured the bourguignon so must’ve been tasty.
Chocolate beignets are dense and molten-​filled, so nothing like a traditional beignet a la Café du Monde, but more like a chocolate lovers delight.
Lemon glacé soufflé was refreshingly light and tasty — not really a soufflé but more like an airy panna cotta. Would’ve polished this off but was too full by then.
Ambiance was quite nice as was our server, so look forward to a better experience next time!

Was just in here as a get together with a few friends.

— Very chic décor, darkly-​lit, reminds me more like many restaurants we went to in LA instead of typical Boston
— Good selection of wines by the glass and at a reasonable price
— Charcuterie and fromage platter was pretty good
— The fries are very well done
Con:
— Having a handful of dish/​silverware spilled near me. thankfully just missed my coat and my bag is saffiano leather so the couple pieces of onions wiped off easily. And they did get us a couple more glasses of wine for free. But still… always puts a damper on the experience
— They forgot to put in the brussel sprouts we ordered and ended up bringing us a serving for free for being so late, but it’s not that good and the plate is tiny (not sure if that’s the actual size, then in that case it’s a rip off, or we got a small free version)
— I got the bar steak, and husband got the steak frites. They are suppose to be different cuts but really look the same, except mine has caramelized onions on top. Average in taste.
Overall it was an ok dinner experience but nothing stood out as extraordinary.

We came here for our anniversary dinner and we didn’t expect much, but the whole experience turned out fantastic. We didn’t have reservation but got seat right away eventhough it’s a busy saturday.
Food was exceptional, and the service was top notch, from the host to the waiters, everyone was pleasant and professional.
Ambience was nice, a bit dark, good choice for anyone looking for a romantic dine out. There’s also a bar to have a drink or hang out.
I’ll definitely return.

So if you haven’t noticed, the South End is CRAWLING with amazing food. This makes it a delicious place to dine but unfortunately also creates a lot of competition. I thought Gaslight was good but nothing to write home about (just something to Unilocal about)
App: Escargot. I’m slightly biased because I’m not really a fan. No, not because it’s snails. I’ve eaten a lot of weird things, that doesn’t bother me. However escargot doesn’t really taste like anything on its own — it just takes the flavor of whatever its coated in. This time it was garlic and butter in which case I should have just gotten garlic bread and been just as happy.
Entrée: Duck Confit. I LOVE duck. So ducking much. If you’ve never had it TRY it. Please. Do yourself a favor. This was a tasty, filling dish served with wild rice and I did enjoy it. However it didn’t necessarily stand out. My friends also said hers was fatty although I thought mine was fine.
Dessert: Crème Brulee. Again good, not spectacular. Pretty small, I don’t know why most restaurants feel the need to serve it in a teacup. Give me MORE.
Overall solid choice but not spectacular. Definitely a safe dinner option.

We had dinner here on a Saturday evening with some friends. Parking is easy. There is a lot next to the restaurant and it is free with validation from Gas Light. Otherwise street parking is tight.
We checked in and as we were a little early, we had drinks at the bar. The place was hopping (it was around 9 pm. I had the Cerise cocktail, which was okay. It had gin, ginger beer and a cherry liqueur.
Our table was ready on time. Overall the ambiance is nice, lively and casual. I had the onion soup and the boeuf bourguignon. The soup was really good! I liked this version much better than the one from Aquitaine. The boeuf was good as well but it is not served or prepared in the traditional way. I was expecting more of a stew but it was the piece of beef with some fingerling potatoes and sauce. They use capers in the boeuf bourguignon, which made the sauce a little too salty for my tastes. It was fine regardless.
Overall a good meal in a nice atmosphere. I would definitely come back and try the other dishes.

I should of wrote this review earlier/​been back a few times, but this place deserves 5 stars from the service to the food.
If it is a nice day, sit outside on the patio. If you drive, they also comp. parking too. This place is a little off the beaten path and in front of the Boston Sports club, but it’s a very large venue.

–Early bird dinners or Grandma dinners I call them (pre-​fix menu for 30pp from 5:30pm-6:30pm)
–But since it doesn’t seem like I can ever make this time — go with the mussels/​frittes as a shared APP
–Pâté de Foie Gras
–Roasted Cod Poelee (the spanish chorizo makes the dish)
–House-​Made Tagliatelle with lamb (like what?- delish)

Brunch Review!
While Gaslight is open for brunch on weekends from 9am-​3pm, they only offer their special Prix Fixe Brunch menu for $ 11.95pp on Saturdays from 9am-​3pm and on Sundays from 9am-​11am.
Since I needed to find something to eat inbetween my morning volunteering and my afternoon activities, and Gaslight was in the right neighborhood and had free parking (with validation, 4 hours of parking was free), I took advantage of the opportunity and hopped on over for a taste of their prix fixe brunch experience.
For a fine summer Saturday, I found the dining room of Gaslight rather sparse of patrons, but then I realized that a number of diners had opted for Gaslight’s green bordered patio space.
Initially, I was offered a table neighboring the booth I had on a previous visit. I declined since I wasn’t interested in being accidentally bumped by the passersby, and in turn was offered a much more comfortable table for a singleton diner. One where I could sit with my back by the wall in the bar area, which was set back a good distance from the foot traffic.
The prix fixe brunch comes with your choice of either fresh squeezed OJ or grapefruit juice (orange!), coffee or tea (tea! Earl Grey), Julia Child’s Spiced Shortbread with raspberry jam, and your choice of a selection of brunch entrees:
Vanilla French Toast
With sauteed apples & sweetened fromage blanc
Omelette Lyonnaise
With gruyère cheese, potatoes and caramelized onions
Scrambled Eggs Forestiere
with roasted mushrooms & Boucheron cheese
Omelette Florentine
with garlic spinach and French Feta cheese
I opted for the Omelette Florentine, figuring that some veggie would do me good. The teapot, juice, and shortbread came quickly to the table, with the omelette not far behind, accompanied by thin cut crisp fries which sprawled beyond their half of the plate a smidge. The omelette came folded in quarters, so I opened it up to check out the green within. Hmmm… rather disappointing. Spinach, after all, was the point of a spinach omelette. I also noticed that the surface of my ketchup had unappetizingly dried over.
As I awaited the return of my server with a replacement condiment cup of fresh ketchup, I received a surprise visit from the manager who welcomed me back and amazingly enough correctly identified my last visit as but two months prior. Since he asked how my meal was, I mentioned to him my thoughts regarding the spinach and the ketchup. He offered to have the plate remade for me, but I declined as I felt that I didn’t have much time. He was not to be dissuaded however, and offered to leave me my current plate so I could continue to munch on the fries, while he got me a new omelette. As if that was not enough, he comped me my meal as a thank you for a past positive dinner review, which I told him that they had entirely earned.
The replacement omelette had a much better ratio of spinach to egg, with the spinach being quite well seasoned. The sweet dessert bar was best consumed with alternating sips of the tea rather than the juice. All in all, a satisfying brunch. I’d be interested in returning to sample the french toast or the alternative omelette option with gruyère cheese, potatoes and caramelized onions on a future visit.
