In Your Ear Records

Having heard of this place before, but not being able to check it out, I finally got the opportunity. I found lots of good music at reasonable prices. I’d definitely recommending taking a chance on it — although you definitely will need a good amount of time to dig through the crates.

Hey, you know, if it’s good enough for Jimmy Page, it’s definitely way too good for me.
However, it isn’t too good. On the universal Goldilocks rubric of goodness, it’s «just right.»
I got a $ 10 cassette deck there once, and so many weird 45s that I wouldn’t know where to begin.
A labyrinth of cool shit, good tunes, and maybe Jimmy Page touched that Tangerine Dream record. You can’t prove that he didn’t.

This place is great. I just sold/​donated a ton of old records to In Your Ear, about 8 grocery bags worth, and the guys helped me carry them from my car down to the store, and gave me a very fair price for them. Not to mention that they’re just extremely cool and chill dudes, super nice people. Even friendly to my dog! They’re clearly incredibly knowledgable about their business. Hidden gem near BU.

At first, In Your Ear Records looks like it might be a total dumpster dive. It’s a basement filled with old records, but it actually doesn’t take much digging to find something good to take home. I think the staff can get all the credit for that. The guys behind the counter had some thoughtful advice and opinions about various records and how to best play them, and they seemed truly passionate about what they were talking about. The stock was well organized, and there was a fun section of really cheap singles, along with used turntable parts, odd remote controls, posters, videos, CDs, cassettes, and 8-​tracks. I had a lot of fun visiting with a friend who lives in the area. We spent a good amount of time there, and I think it makes for a good excursion whether you have a few minutes or a few hours to spare.

One of the best record stores in Boston that carry vinyl, CDs, tapes and even 8 tracks. DVDs to. Wish they were more organized though and be careful when walking aroung you might trip. They do seem to need a larger space though with so many boxes of albums.

This place is awesome. It reminded me of the old used music stores I lived in when I was a kid. I found great 40’s, 50’s and big band music here for my grandmother who loves that stuff but would never be able to get it herself. Its hard to find and took me a minute to realize it was downstairs. But when I found it and walked in… I knew I was in music Heaven.

Great stores. I have been coming since I was a kid looking for LPs cassettes and CDs. Now I find it funny that I go back to look for albums. In your ear Is very reasonably priced for vinyl. I found some gems like George Michael Faith in mint condition for $ 1. That was a great find I’m glad I could spend a few hours sifting through their collection. if the records were better organized. I would give it five stars. Hard to park as well.

I have grabbed everything from ’94 jungle tracks to Evan’s Pyramid 7“s here. In Your Ear is an absolute force, boasting a selection of upwards of 100,000 vinyls. Come ready to dig and makes sure to ask Reid about the rare soul bin. Lots of local color here. Absolutely top second-​hand store — nothing more to say.

IYE is plain and simple a Crate Digger’s paradise. In order to find goodies, you have to be prepared to work a bit. If your idea of record shopping is to casually thumb through a few bins, my suggestion is to look elsewhere. Otherwise, this place never disappoints.

Love these dudes. Stopped by last weekend to look for some old jazz records. While I didn’t find what I was looking for, I found other equally amazing things and I had a great time sifting through bins of records and talking to the guys behind the counter. A lot of times I feel spiteful as a 1) young 2) female customer when I go into record shops because a lot of places they will treat you like an idiot (aging rockstar boys club, u feel me?) but that is Not the case here! These guys rule and will help you find whatever it is yr into. They have everything from new releases to early pressings of classics, all of it. Could spend hours here. Good place to look for weird obscure stuff too.

It is great that this store has a huge amount of vinyl, but it has way too much. So much that you can’t get to it all. There are boxes upon boxes of vinyl. Like how am I supposed to get to the fourth box on the bottom when there is no where to put the other boxes on top because the store is so cramped? Seriously, it is not fatty friendly. I had to suck my gut in a couple of times to get from one section to another. I also wish it were more organized. They also don’t really seem to have much past the 90s. Like they didn’t even have Nirvana vinyl. COME ON. On the plus side, they basically have the entire discography of two artists that I really like.
I asked the guy at the counter, or more rather, the guy sitting in front of the boxes of CDs if they had vinyl of a certain band. He looked so angry that he had to put his newspaper down and do his job. (And I work in retail so I know how it is, but come on). He gave me such a freaking attitude when I tried to ask him. Like ooookkaaayy. He didn’t even attempt to look, he was just like «I don’t think we have that». And no, I did not expect him to do all the work for me. I looked myself first. He although did a 360 when I came up in spent $ 20, as opposed to my friend who bought one of the 50 cent vinyls who he gave an attitude. Like yeah buddy, I’m not some punk kid who came in here to just bother you. I came to make a purchase. And if IYE reads this and wants to know what employee I’m talking about, he has a nose piercing and was wearing a cross earing I believe on one of his ears.

Somehow they manage to find vintage records in ridiculously good condition. No matter what genre of music you’re into you’ll find something here. The only downside to this place is you’ll want to buy a whole bunch of stuff and end up having to leave some behind

Took a ride over to In Your Ear Records and walked out with a few records. Definitely a great selection… I just wish I had more time to spare to really do a deeper dig. On the surface they had a nice variety of practically everything. Prices appeared fair and the condition of the records I picked up were good. The guys behind the counter were nice and helpful. They also offered a lot of other media (so many cassettes to choose from) and vintage stereo equipment.
Only downside is it was a bit cluttered and dusty. They need a few air purifiers in there to freshen it up.
If you’re in Boston and looking to check out a record shop, this place should be one of the first ones you check out!

Great prices and helpful service. Make sure you have time in your day because this a total crate digging store. There is A LOT to dig through and I came out with some gems. Make it through if you are visiting or living there!

The In Your Ear on Comm Ave is much larger than the one in Harvard Sq, enabling it to pack in A LOT of records. Unfortunately, sometimes less is more and I found myself thinking this when I was trying to browse through the shop. There is some basic organization for most genres, but then there is also a lot of spill over and surplus that seemingly is not organized at all.
Because of this, it’s hard to say how good the selection really is, and selection is really the key to a record store. If it’s all filler, it doesn’t really matter how many records there may be. I went through all the miscellaneous letter sections for the Rock section and really didn’t see anything that wowed me. I went through a couple smaller sections (exotica and new arrival 7“s) and still, nothing impressive.
It may just be that all the non-​picked over records are buried in the unorganized surplus crates scattered around the store. I certainly saw some good LPs on the wall, but those were all cherry-​picked by the staff and priced as you’d expect. If you don’t mind spending a few hours searching through crates and crates of records, you might come away with some good stuff. Then again, you might have just wasted an afternoon. It’s really hard to say.

I’d have to agree with the others who have commented on In Your Ear Records and say that it is probably the best record store in Boston. The combination of convenient location, incredible selection, and really cool employees make it my top pick.
This place has A TON of music; records, CDs, cassettes, anything that you could desire. I could (and have) spend hours in this place perusing their immense selection of music. I would have to admit that I got lost trying to find it the first time I came (its downstairs) but once you enter the shop you are in a world of vinyl. They truly have everything that you be looking for, which is shown by the fact that I walked out in my most recent trip with albums from Simon & Garfunkel (1960s) and Beach House (2000s) (pretty diverse selection).
Sidenote: There is nothing cooler than hearing from a record store owner that you picked a couple great records!
In a world where people usually click to download their music on iTunes it is refreshing to have a place like In Your Ear where you can get back to the roots of shopping for music. I highly recommend clearing an afternoon and visiting In Your Ear to browse an abundant music selection the old fashioned way!

This shop gets my vote for best record store in Boston. All genres, LOTS of records… vintage stereo equipment too. Indeed there are unorganized bins but the cream of their collection is organized in my favorite alphabetized-​by-​genre-​with-​labeled-​dividers-​for-​big-​names fashion.
The customer service was top-​notch. The fellow on staff (I’m guessing the owner) was very talkative and entertaining. When I walked in he was chatting up a storm with a local about about a book by Jim Dawson called «What Was the First Rock and Roll Record», all the while DJ’ing a soundtrack for the discussion and the store. When I asked him to throw on a J.J. Johnson record they had for sale, he hesitated but agreed. Later I got into a fun conversation with him about how the oil shortage of the 1970’s caused record companies to press vinyl at a lighter weight.
I got a great deal. I found an original pressing of Cliff Brown and Max Roach’s «Brown and Roach Incorporated» in VG– condition for six bucks! I also got a good deal on a Thelonious Monk record the first time I was there back in 2009. Not to be skipped.

This is the best place to buy everything that you needed in the 90’s.
It’s set up kind of like a hoard, but that’s what I like about it. I’m never looking for anything specific, so I like digging through all the boxes. It’s an adventure. There is SO MUCH in here that it’s difficult not to find something cool. Lifting up all the boxes trying to find things makes me feel important, like I know what I’m doing. I don’t buy vinyl because I don’t have anything to play it on (yet), but everything else is cheap. I like stores where I can afford things.
This store also has a nice personality. You know how most stores try to act like your friend by putting up friendly/​silly signs or Facebook statuses? This place does no such BS. Their signs that are genuinely funny. The walls are also covered in awkward, amateur paintings which gives this store a special place in my icy heart. I go in even when I don’t need or want anything because I like being here.
I also like the people who work here, they have a good sense of humor. They also don’t come up to you and ask if there’s anything they can help you find in a weird, overly polite voice, which always makes me happy. I hate when stores make the employees do that. AND they have a stack of free VHS tapes. Today I got the terrible 4Kids dub of Cardcaptors AND Mark Twain: The Musical for free. It was like Christmas. There are tons, so they’ll probably be there for a while.

The best vinyl shop in all of Boston. I had bought a record player for a friend of mine leaving for NYC. I wanted to get her a couple records to get her collection going. I had been there before but not for 6 or 7 years. Upon walking in the place is a jungle, I mean just a insane amount of vinyl. Most of it was pretty well organized although there was a lot of random overflow to sort through as well.
I was looking for mostly some classic rock and soul. They had pretty much everything I wanted! They made each section clearly defined and easy to search for the artists that I wanted.
The best part of this place is the prices! No record that I bought was over 5 bucks. I walked out with about 8 or 9 records and only spent and total of 15 bucks. Compare that with a place down the street where I bought the same amount and spent closer to 50!
Bottem line, if you want some great vinyl and modest prices, start here!

This review is strictly about the experience I had here selling some CDs. I came in with 4 bags of CDs — maybe about 80 discs? Very diverse genres and artists; some things very well known, some things much less so.
Did I get as much money as I would have gotten selling them one-​by-​one on Amazon? Of course not — not even close. But you shouldn’t expect that, selling to a store. You sell at a store because you don’t have time to go through all that pricing and mailing, and the guy at the store knows what he’s doing, and you need to get rid of the CDs. You’re «paying» for the convenience. The guy is just trying to make a living and stay in business. I got what I thought was a perfectly fair price ($ 100).
Just as important, he was really nice, low key, friendly, obviously enjoys just flipping through a big, miscellaneous stack of music. A very good experience.
Also, wow, cool store, absolutely jammed, floor to ceiling, with vinyl and other media. For the youth kids who want to sit on the floor for hours, sorting through records, this is obviously a great place to shop — I would have been there too, 20 or 30 years ago. Now, I’m just happy to have a pleasant, businesslike place to unload some CDs I don’t need anymore.
