Last year I was on a desperate hunt for Chinese New Year cards to send to my company’s business associates in Asia. A common practice nowadays is to send e-cards, but my boss wanted the real deal(Chinese/Lunar New Year cards are renowned for their beauty and sophistication) and he wanted me to put a handwritten message in each card. All eighty of them. I walked over and they had about a hundred cards– score one for me. I wanted to make sure that the cards(a mix of Chinese characters and English) were for 2008 or at least usefully generic, so I insisted on lying all the cards out on the counter and taking pictures to mail to a coworker who can read Chinese. The ladies behind the counter were very gracious as I snapped photos and promised to return later that day. Bingo– got the go ahead from coworker and returned to Silky Way, Inc after approval of photos. Since I was damn near buying out their whole stock, I figured I could cut haggle with the ladies(it’s Chinatown, after all; I almost feel it’s insulting if you DON’T bargain), and they ended up knocking $ 10 off the price. Hey, it wasn’t to save my company money– it’s all about getting a good deal, folks. Totally worth it. Come January 2009, I visit the Silky Way again in hopes of Great Luck II, but discover they are out of Chinese New Year cards. :(Boo. Turns out they never replenished the stock I decimated the year previous, so I had to buy online from some lame vendor. It just wasn’t the same. I will probably return to the Great Silky Way in the future, should a craving for inexplicable Chinese junk hit me. Or, of course, a spontaneous need for martial arts equipment. Only thing to keep in mind should you go: they don’t take American Express. T’sucks.

As far as i’m concerned. This is the ONLY martial arts supply store in the boston area. Very knowledable/friendly staff and have been a customer of theirs for years and will continue to be for the rest of my life. You can find all sorts of various style martial arts gear(Sparring gear/Gi’s for karate/tae kwon do, Muay Thai Shorts, Wooden Dummies, Kicking pads, Tai Chi shoes, Books and DVDS). They also have cute knick-knacks if you ever are in a bind for the last minute gift. Check the store out! The store has alot of character which fully accents the Chinatown atmosphere.

I mostly rely on online stores when I get martial arts supplies such as judo uniform or thai kick pads, etc… But if I need to get something in last minute, this is the place to come. Not only martial arts supplies, there are tons of related books as well as some Asian vases and other decorative gadget. Also they have that Chinese girl clothes. the one you see in the video game«Street Fighters». I can’t think of its name… Otherwise, this is pretty good place to window shop.

went here to pick up a taekwondo dobok(uniform). not much of a selection, but in a pinch it’s a good place to get new uniforms, sparring gear, weapons. the little woman working the martial arts section was helpful and rob is right, there is a great selection of books.
