Tucked on a side street where City Sport used to reign supreme, I hesitated at the door and almost hightailed it over to JM Curley for dinner. Weighing the possibility of a wait and keen to get out of the cold, I descended the stairs into the cozy, dimly lit basement that is Silvertone. I was immediately greeted by one of the servers and, seeing as it was slow and Monday, he sat me even though my party was incomplete. Tap list is short though they do have the Nitro Milk Stout(hands up)! Cocktail list is creative and will only set you back $ 10 a piece. I went with the Joey Joe Joe and, though good, didn’t find it as strong as some others have mentioned. Food is pretty standard bar food and I guess their specialty is the mac & cheese. I was surprised to some randoms on the menu — lo mein and fra diavolo. I opted for something lighter and went with the BLT. So delicious! The bacon was crisp, bread nicely toasted, and I couldn’t stop myself from the fries. Our server was fantastic throughout. When my sidekicks showed up 30 minutes late and the place was running out of free tables, not once did the servers shoot me the side eye to get moving. Between the two servers and the manager seating, taking order, running food and drinks, Silvertone was a well oiled machine. WISH I FOUNDTHISPLACESOONER! Great service, value, and food for the downtown area.

Looking for a dive in downtown Boston to me has always been a challenge. It feels somewhat secret to me. Fortunately a friend guided me to Silvertone. From the outside, I probably would not have chosen it – Silvertone’s sign is oddly reminiscent of the 90s to me, or what I imagine 90s signage to look like. It’s also in the basement, so you can’t really check it out from the outside. You have to descend. But when you do, Silvertone is loud and pleasant and dimly lit, with a fine beer selection and good food. We had to wait about fifteen minutes, after arriving at 6:15 on a Thursday — so it does seem to fill up fast. We weren’t seated in the main restaurant, but instead in a strange side room with a wall that moved, a secret door into the kitchen. It was much quieter in this side room; I think it would have been tough to talk in the main bar area, but where we were was perfect. For dinner we split the cajun burger and the macaroni and cheese. There was nothing particularly cajun about the cajun burger, but it was good and done to a fine medium rare; the macaroni and cheese was just macaroni and cheese, but appropriately decadent. The prices were only a couple dollars on the high side, which is pretty impressive when you consider that this place is two blocks away(if that) from Park Street, and therefore must be paying some Rent with a capital R. All in all, a good experience, and an excellent one when you are in need of a downtown meeting spot — which I frequently am.

Slide on down to Silvertone. Don’t be scared descending the dark steps. You only need one tip: Steak Tips. These tender babies are cooked and seasoned to perfection, pal. A $ 15 tag is well worth the 6 savory chunks cradled by a creamy pile of mashed taters and simple salad on the side just to make the meal feel comfortingly complete. The dark, underground space(and confusing alleyway to the restroom) is reminiscent of the downtown Boston of yesteryear where gangsters and office folks clinked glasses and savored comfort food together. The cocktail list is intriguing and inventive. I went for the Shirley Temple Black, which had a strong rye kick without the cloying taste of grenadine. These guys know balance. And liquor. My cocktail connoisseur comrade vouched for this by ordering an off-menu drink that the bartender executed perfectly. Silvertone is a great escape below the bustling streets of Boston. Just make sure to take my tips and split some steak with Shirley.

Came here with coworkers for our holiday dinner. The restaurant did a nice job sectioning a long table which made it seem more private which was nice. We ordered onion rings, buffalo wings, and quesadillas as apps. I ordered the mac and cheese with medium cooked steak as this seemed to be popular on Unilocal. The apps were decent. not bad. not extraordinary. Better than your average Friday’s apps tho. I personally wasn’t a fan of the mac and cheese, it was too«velveeta/American cheese» tasting to me. I prefer real cheese in mac and cheese so it was a bit disappointing. They served heafty portions but I didnt feel the need to wrap up my leftovers. Our group pretty much ordered all the key dishes in the menu and others seemed to be rather pleased with their selection.

Love love love I’ve love the Mac N Cheese. It’s creamy, tasteful, filling comforting and all around delicious. The service is fast and it’s a perfect lunch spot. Naturally they have great fries that are thin and crispy. Put it on your«to go to» place for lunch or dinner!

Went here with the boyfriend to grab a bite to eat before heading to see a late night movie. There was quite a crowd when we arrived but we were lucky enough to be seated in about 10 minutes. This place has the feel of a diner and is pretty no frills, but the menu prices reflect that as most options range from $ 8-$ 12. For our meal we decided to split a burger and the famous steak tips. The burger we had cooked medium and was good, but I felt like it lacked a little bit of seasoning. The fries that it came with were perfectly crispy and delicious. The steak tips were very good – they included 5 large chunks of steak that were cooked perfectly. Each piece was full of flavor and tender and was quite tasty. The salad and green beans that it came with were also enjoyable and cut the richness of the meat. Overall, the service here is attentive and the food comes out quickly. If you’re looking for a good home-style meal at a reasonable price, this place should definitely be on your list.

This was a nice little place for dinner and drinks. It was a little on the expensive side but makes up for it with the cool décor.

I am so sad to have to take a star away after my last visit. I got the steak tips which were delicious but my mom got the veggie burger which left her with stomach pains the rest of the night. She said something tasted off and lo and behold, soon after, quickly felt the effects. Sorry mom! I’ll stick to the meat :)

Came here for the first time with my best friend a couple weeks back. We were looking for a place to grab a bite and have a drink and do some catching up. We decided we would like to sit at a booth instead of at the bar. The server was a bit… cold. She wasn’t super friendly and didn’t even smile at all. I used to work in the restaurant industry and I know all about good service and I expect nothing less… at the same time, I’m a very good tipper because of this, so I expect a server who’s just very nice and friendly. It didn’t even seem super busy for her to be so distant. She checked on us once or twice, but for our fries, it took a while for us to flag someone down for ketchup. We split the Shepard’s Pie, Calamari, Burger $ Fries. Out of all that, the Shepard’s pie was the best! The calamari was OK, could have gotten better at many places. Burger was meh. The drinks, on the other hand… were PERFECT! That’s probably why I’m giving this place 3 stars instead of 2. I had a Martini & my friend got a Manhattan… the drinks were super strong, just the way I like it! Overall…it’s EH, I would NOT come back… unless I’m just going for a drink and I’m gonna sit at the bar and pray for the same bartender that made our drinks that last time.

Superb lunch option for anyone in the financial/downtown crossing area. I arrived here with a coworker around 12:30pm during the week and the place was absolutely packed but regardless, we were seated quickly and a server came right over to tell us the specials of the day, address any questions and take drink orders. I had heard rave reviews about the beef tips from a coworker and had to get them. They were everything they had talked non-stop about – super tender, perfect medium-rare execution and well balanced with super creamy red mashed potatoes and a refreshing side salad of mixed greens with a light vinaigrette. We were able to eat in under an hour — I would gladly go back!

Visiting Boston for the first time, we had just finished shopping at Primark and were looking for food in the area. Always apprehensive about downtown food(usually expensive, usually busy.), this seemed like the perfect choice to eat at. Overall, I wouldn’t say our experience was bad but it certainly wasn’t extraordinary. We did have a small wait for the table which was to be expected. Thankfully we were seated on the quiet side without the rowdy bar patrons who were incredibly loud. Service got off to a slow start and we seemed to have the server who was frantically running around the whole night as opposed to his colleagues that calmly served our neighbouring tables. The food was a slight disappointment. My partner had the meatloaf that looked like it came from a can and was really not good at all. I had a slightly better experience with the shepherd’s pie, even though it wasn’t great in itself. Spying other tables — the macaroni looked pretty good. We had a fairly bland experience food and service-wise. I’d be more inclined to try somewhere else next time. Not sure what all the raving reviews are about.

I had a good experience eating here with a group of 10 on a Saturday night. It is kind of a diner/bar type of atmosphere. The staff were friendly and the food came out quickly. I had the Mac and cheese with honey and chili chicken. It was good and satisfying. The prices are very reasonable. A steak sandwich for $ 12 is pretty hard to beat.

Great spot! Went with the Mac and cheese and the honey chili chicken on the side! Both were delicious but I wish there was a little more sauce on the chicken, last time when I got the chicken on top of the mac and cheese there seemed to be a lot of sauce which over powered the rich cheese flavor. My roommates went with the Shepard’s pie and the turkey sandwich, both received rave reviews though the fries were thin and a little lacking in flavor. Drinks are a flat $ 10 and depending on the cocktail can be quiet strong!

This place happened to be open and close by to another restaurant that just stopped serving food(and fantastic oysters) so out of desperation and being an out of town visitor I just took a chance and ate here. Menu is just«ok» but reasonably priced but you really do get what you pay for sometimes. Had a salad with grilled chicken and as someone who eats a good amount of grilled chicken it was on par with something processed at some restaurant fast food chains. On to the main course of a «12 ounce» grilled pork chop with veggies(who offers carrots as your veggie? What am I 5 yrs old?). It was small and overcooked. Mostly fat on the chop too… Wouldn’t return here for the food that’s for sure.

Subpar food that was overpriced and just ok in my opinion. I had the grilled cheese(regularly $ 8) with ham — that I didn’t know was a $ 1 up charge– that was clearly processed American cheese with maybe two slices of refrigerated pre-packaged deli/lunch meat ham. After eating one half of the grilled cheese, my stomach started feeling uneasy so I did not finish the remainder of my meal. The fries however were very, very good. Side note: The bathrooms could use some modernization and more space. It was super tight and considering most women pee on toilet seats and/or floors, if you have a dress or long top on it could get soiled by someone else’s waste trying to fit into the stall. This of course is coming from a 5’1112lb woman, so take that into consideration when using the women’s bathroom.

3.5! A solid place to drop in for the casual drink/dinner when you’re in the downtown area and looking for some sustenance. Can be a good place to order a few small plates/apps to share with friends. I’ve been here a few times before but recently went again with b. and got some mussels, fried calamari, and mac n’ cheese to share. Basically: FRIEDCALAMARI: Good but nothing special. MAC N’ CHEESE: Came out piping hot, ooey gooey, and creamy. Yum. I couldn’t decide between the bacon and the honey-chili chicken so asked for a combo of the two, which was done without a fuss. The chicken was fine but I wonder if the honey overpowered the dish a bit. I was hoping for a little bit of a kick with the chili but it wasn’t there. The portion may look small but it is FILLING. Cheeeeese. MUSSELS: Oh man, this must have been a bad batch or something because I’ve ordered them here before and they did not come out like this. The taste was slightly off and the texture was an unappetizing softness that immediately disintegrated in your mouth after a couple of chews. No substance at all. The poor mussels even looked sickly — a pale, almost translucent, white. Ick. We didn’t bother finishing them just to be on the safe side. Service is generally pretty friendly. Loud, sometimes rowdy, ambiance. I found it to be pretty dark in the dining area this past visit(don’t remember it being so dark before) but maybe in old age, my eyesight is going.

After two visits here, I’m a huge fan of this a solid grille for dinner and drinks in an otherwise pricey swath of Downtown Boston. The whole menu is very reasonably priced, including the large burger and fries for $ 10 and the excellent steak tips for $ 12 served alongside mashed potatoes and mesclun greens — this kind of deal is unheard of Downtown. You can also load up on Mac N’ Cheese($ 10+) customized with steak, chicken, bacon, or peas — all good choices on top of their ritz cracker crust. The draft beer menu is limited to around 5 options, but their cocktail menu is expensive. The grille’s interior is below street level and gets quite loud, so I wouldn’t recommend Silvertone for a working dinner or lunch. Staff was extremely friendly, attentive, and accommodating. Overall, Silvertone is a great option for dinner and drinks after work with friends, especially if you’re looking for good value and a full meal that leaves some cash left over for your night on the town.

Being located in Downtown Crossing, Silvertone is a bar/restaurant that people frequently visit after work. I came here on a weekday and it became very crowded as soon as it hit 5 pm. I came here with a group and quickly found a table near the bar. There is a more sit-down restaurant area in the back. The place is dimly lit. Music was playing and people were chitchatting. It was noisy but not to the point that you cannot carry on a conversation at your usual decibels. The ladies in our group each got a drink at the bar. I had a piña colada. It was pretty good. Not the best I’ve had but sufficient to make me relaxed after a long day of work. It was around dinner time so we decided to get some food to share. The menu was simple. I wasn’t very impressed with the options of food so we just ordered some fries. A bowl of fries was brought to our table by a waitress. It was very busy but service was still relatively fast, which I appreciated. There is a card minimum so cash will come in handy. Ambiance is casual and comfortable. Perfect spot to wind down after work and grab a drink with friends. I look forward to returning to try the steak tips that other Unilocalers rave about.

I came with a big party to Silvertone on a Wednesday night. I was not able to make a reservation but the wait for a table took only 10 – 15 minutes, which isn’t too bad. This restaurant is dark. It is also really loud inside and I constantly had to shout across the table to talk to my friends. The menu is really simple. There isn’t much to choose from. The price is also on a cheaper end even though this restaurant is located in downtown. But also the food does not taste that good. I ordered the fried calamari($ 11), buffalo wings($ 10), and burgers and fries($ 10) to share with my friend. The calamari didn’t taste like anything. A little salt would help. I also was not impressed with the wings. The celery sticks were dry and the wings didn’t have that zing that I was looking for in buffalo wings. Last but not least, the burger was a sad story. The bun tasted like it has been sitting there for a while. It was very dry. Actually the whole burger was really dry. Service was also horrible! Just because there is an 18% gratuity does not mean you can treat your customers like crap. The server was rude and impatient. Probably he has no experience dealing with a big party. If some of us needed another minute to decide what we want to eat, you do not need to be so rude about it.
