Sugar Heaven

Okay, okay, I know it’s right near Newbury Street and that a lot of stores around here are tourist traps. But as a Boston resident, I had always walked by without looking closely at it until today. Curiosity finally got the better of me and I decided to stop in to see what it was all about. My first impression was the weird, sugar smell that permeated the place. I almost wonder if they pump the smell in to make you buy more? But it just sort of made me sick and not all that interested in eating any candy. Obviously, that’s not enough to totally make me dislike a place, so I decided to look past it (or rather, smell past it). I was sorely disappointed.
Let me assure you that this place is far from heaven. First of all, every counter and wall has weird, condescending signs reminding people not to touch the candy, and if they break something, they have to buy it. I felt like I was in kindergarten and that I had misbehaved during nap time; a fully grown adult shouldn’t be filled with guilt simply by entering a store. Secondly, the candy was completely overpriced and not even anything that good looking. I could tell you where to get almost every product somewhere else in the city for cheaper. It wasn’t even like anything was handmade or gourmet; it was literally mass-​produced candy at a huge mark up.
But wait, there’s more! I noticed signs pointing downstairs for an ice cream shop. Who knew? So I decided to venture down the strange stairs (which felt like I was going into an employee room or storage space, not a functioning part of the store. The basement was beyond creepy and had completely insane prices. Seriously, you can get cheaper ice cream at Ben and Jerry’s a block away. And that stuff’s expensive too. I pretty much spun completely around and walked right out of the store, back into the safety of fresh air and open space.
I didn’t give it just a single star because I feel bad for local businesses trying to just simply make it in the midst of large corporations and chains, but I didn’t feel bad enough to stay in there longer than I needed. Just please; go somewhere else!

$ 7.75 for ONE 3.25oz Toblerone chocolate bar?! Asked the lady if the price was serious and she just laughed and said yeah, they’re really expensive for some reason… What, that doesn’t come with a trip to the Matterhorn? Buy your candy elsewhere and spend the extra you save on a new car. Serious rip off. They either do it intentionally or are mistagging and staff is clueless.

It is a sugar heaven but extremly overpriced. You might not feel the hit in your pocket if you come in for a couple of treats but once you have to buy enough to fill up a gift basket i would recommend you to go to CVS or Walgreens.

To be honest, I really wasn’t impressed by this place. I went specifically for the ice cream downstairs. They didn’t have any hot fudge in service, and I should’ve just left then.
It was kind of creepy down there. It had the essence of a former frat basement. But what really disturbed me was the random «adult» section, with no forewarning or any other clue that you’re walking into a mini candy version of a sex toy shop. It was not alluring, just kind of scattered, random, and trashy. Now believe me, I like sex toys shops as much as Paris Hilton. I just wasn’t expecting it, they just kind of throw it in your face. What if I had my kids with me? It’s a candy shop for crying out loud, there were families right above us. Just inappropriate in my opinion. If they did a better job of creating that kind of atmosphere from the get go, I would understand. It just comes up on you unexpectedly.
Second, the price. The small cup ice cream with sprinkles was the size of a toddlers fist. For over five dollars? You’ve got to be kidding me. At cold stone, their delicious ice cream with flavors and toppings is also over five dollars, but the size for their small «like it» is much bigger than this measly scoop. And she hardly out any sprinkles on it, forgot the whipped cream, and there was no hot fudge available.
The Oreo ice cream was not that tasty, and definitely not worth the money. I don’t know why I didn’t just walk away.
This review is purely of the downstairs ice cream parlor, not the upstairs which I only walked through.

Sugar heaven is great up until you get to the register. There is a reason they don’t put up prices on the packaged candy, and it’s because you wouldn’t buy anything if you knew how much anything actually costed. Skip it, go to cvs, and feel good about the decision you made. Anything you cant find there you could find somewhere cheaper. Just save your money.

Everyone’s drunken alter-​ego is familiar with the forgettable candy store that is Sugar Heaven, but what if I told you there was something a little more… satisfying… beneath it? Descend the stairs and what lies below may surprise you *devilish cursory glance.*
Twist: there’s a hidden (local) ice cream shop underneath, which, as the downstairs of Sugar Heaven, I am now fondly referring to as Sugar Hell. The flavors are numerous and interesting, you can get any candy as topping, and there are waffle cones. The lemon pie and maple walnut were user favorites, and the fourth star is for purely for customer service.
The takeaway? Give in to temptation… it’s better down below.

Way, way over-​priced. Save your money. Spent $ 20 on 3 small bags of candy that we could have gotten at CVS for under $ 5.

I had friends visiting from out of town, and after the red sox game, we wanted ice cream. We saw a sign in the window that Sugar Heaven offers a discount if you can show your ticket stub. We got ice cream, and were told the dicount did not apply to ice cream. There is no difference in businesses between the candy and ice cream, and the sign did not make that distinction of limitations on the dicount. It’s not even the dollar or so we would have saved. It was the lack of customer service and lack of knowledge of how to provide the discount. For the record, the ice cream was delicious, but the overall experience was poor. Oh, and there is no restroom for such a big venue.

The one in assembly is supposed to be a sugar heaven outlet. I went there and was basically harassed to buy or try a piece of candy. The stuff is cool in there but I bought three regular candy bars and it cost 10.17, and that’s an outlet too??? Why is it so pricey for one candy bar

It’s nice to pop in the store and just look at the candy selection, but the associates are a little too attentive so it made me a little bit uncomfortable. I’m guessing they probably had problems with people stealing.
Save your money and get your import candy online. It’s annoying to pick out candy to find out how expensive it is when you are at the counter later on. If you are a person who gets uncomfortable easily, I’d avoid this place.

Service although courteous was overboard. I was almost harassed to buy something… may I help you find something… appears to be a place that is run with an iron fist. Staff was almost over aggressive about assisting me… I mean for God’s sake it’s a candy store.
Some of sugar candy is hard and stale in texture. I know a fresh Swedish fish when I see one.
Prices — obscenely expensive… less than ½ pound just under $ 7.00!!!
Clincher — «oh there’s a $ 10.00 minimum charge on cc orders». At first I tried to find something to complete my purchase up to $ 10.00 and then I thought WTF? Why am I doing this. I fibbed and said I was running to ATM… kept running to CVS which was happy to take my cc for a $ 3.00 bag of Swedish fish…
All set with Sugar Heaven.

Plenty of selections but super expensive. I paid almost $ 3 for a handful of jelly beans. I can get a whole box at Trader’s Joe for $ 1.99. Cute décor. Was I overchaged? I swear I saw a sign for $ 4.XX on one section (jelly beans, sour belts etc). The receipt said $ 17.56 a pound? Whaoooo

then it opened up in my neighborhood!
This store offers literally 100s of kinds of candy:
lollipops, jelly beans, licorice, chocolate.
They have retro candy and jumbo novelty pieces.
THE DEAL: Visit for a variety of fun stocking stuffers!

This place makes me sad. It could be a cute place to treat someone to nice candy. However, the ambiance is very cheap, the music extremely loud, and the candy is nothing all that special. While kids might enjoy the store, you will spend a lot of time gaping at the insane mark-​ups, steering them away from the inappropriate candies, and covering their ears from some of the more vulgar songs. You also need cash unless you’re spending a lot of money, which is what tends to happen even for just a little candy. In my opinion, if you’re charging so much money, the experience needs to be much more charming. Otherwise I might as well go to CVS a few doors down.

Ice cream was pretty good… the flavors I had which were pistachio and walnut something.
Three stars cuz this place was just unreasonably expensive for mediocre products. Nothing special, so nothing worth the prices.
The place is like a smörgåsbord of candy and it looks like candy heaven when you walk in, but as I’ve mentioned above, nothing really spectacular that isn’t out of the ordinary.

Stellar and awesome candy store with damn near everything … except for kosher gummy bears. That would have been the winning touch!

Tons of candy, some old school brands, some off brands — very little particularly top tier. You can easily spend too much, but with some care — for instance actually paying attention to weight and prices — you can get out with a small bag of mixed candy for only a few bucks.
At the back of the store are rows and rows of candy dispensers, organized into groups of prices. You grab a bag, and mix and match candy from each price range — but get a new bag for each price range.
It’s a fun concept — but nothing about this place made me want to run back again — maybe I just need to work on my sweet tooth.

This place is a joke. I stopped by as I heard they had a small selection of British chocolate. I stop by and check out the section which is towards the back of the store. Very small selection but almost all of it had expired! Yes they have expired chocolate on their shelves.
I know the British has their dates backwards (so for Feb 12, 2013 they would have it as 12÷2÷2013) this was not to blame. The dates were clearly way past their expiration date.
I mentioned it to the associate who said she would take care of it. I find one bar of chocolate that was still good so I went to the checkout to pay. $ 3.25 for a candy bar. YES this is just one candy bar. I understand you import this but I have found it elsewhere for much less than $ 2.
Not impressed at all with my visit and I will never go back.

CHECK THE EXPIRATION DATES!

A sugary paradise reminiscent of mall style candy stores with a old-​timey twist. When you first walk in your welcomed by a proclamation of love and dedication to anything sugar dipped, chocolate rolled, or gummy– a perfect indication that eating to your hearts delight might send you to marathon sports next door for some work out gear. The walls are adorned with different tin lunch boxes (mainly Disney, a couple coca-​cola) and half a wall of Pez candy dispensers.
My favorite part are the grandma like candies in the middle of the wall sold for 5 – 25 cents. Ah, the perfect way to spend my weekly allowance. a little farther back they have the traditional fair of bag it and weight it candy supplies. M & M’s, chocolate covered gummies, and an assortment of dark chocolate dipped everything. Nothing too crazy in this candy department but an easy accessible set up if you know what you’re looking for.
Downstairs, they have an ice cream shop, another really cute addition. You can get pretty much any of the candy toppings upstairs on your ice cream downstairs. veeerrryyy smart but if upstairs is sugar heaven than downstairs is my dentists hell. Probably go back if I’m looking for a quick bag of name brand candy, but not my kind of place to discover something new.

I went in yesterday for a soda and was so surprised to hear the the music at a normal level. FINALLY!!! It’s not a nightclub at 2 in the afternoon. Please, PLEASE management listen to the feedback of your staff and non pre-​teen patrons, keep the music at a normal level. The music prompted this review and is responsible for one of the three stars. Usually, this is a two star establishment and that is being generous.
