The Liberty Hotel

I would give zero stars if that was possible. Door man tried to rip us off because we had out of state IDs. The club is prestigious. Be warned.

I like the ambiance of Alibi and clink though they have the most unprofessional staff throughout the hotel!!! Everytime I go to this place we get treated like we would at a dive bar back in my college days! Their staff act like they’re working around the west wing of the white house!
If I’m going to be spending over 20bucks per drink and you claim that your hotel is fancy; maybe have your staff treat people with respect and not have the stereotypical «door man» attitude!
Regardless of how busy your bar gets, you need to keep in mind that every person that walks through the door is a CUSTOMER and is spending money at your hotel/​bar. So please train your staff to have less attitude and more respect!

Nice hotel, but some of the most unfriendly hotel employees in Boston, next to the Westin staff.

The Liberty has tons of character and class. The complimentary champagne was a nice touch. Every detail from the tv ui, to the shower soaps must have been meticulously thought through. There are very few complaints but a few notes for future guests.
–there is no coffee or tea in the room, you have to call the front desk and request it.
–there is coffee and tea in the lobby, but only until 9am on weekdays?
–the room service prices are outrageous. $ 50 for a burger and wings.
The location though central to back bay, north end, and south end is in a very awkward intersection.

1 night stay May 29^th. Not worth the price. I don’t write many reviews but wanted to comment on this hotel. With taxes, etc., room was over $ 400. Check in time was supposed to be 3:00pm and my wife and I arrived at 3:30 only to be told our room «wasn’t ready yet». We had to wait an additional 45 minutes. That may be ok for cheaper hotels but not for this cost.

My wife and I like coffee in the morning. I understand that hotel room coffee varies in terms of quality but, again, I consider the cost of this hotel to be high enough that a good coffee option should be available in the room. The Liberty has no in-​room option at all. Sure I can trek down to the lobby and carry two 6 oz cups back to the room but that is not my idea of a luxury hotel.

Spent a night here with my friend just monthly or so after it opened for business. Loved this resort. Excellent theory. Excellent location… only by the station and great local restaurants near the resort. Just a couple of stations away from Harvard /​MIT. Excellent rooms with huge bathrooms.

I attended a party here and I enjoyed it. It is truly a prison that was redesigned into a hotel so the ambience is phenomenal. They do get a lot of customers so it tends to be super hot (remember it was formerly a prison so windows don’t open). Outside the heat, it’s a great place to host a party or go for a drink

The restaurant was unbelievable to think it once was a jail. The food words couldn’t express it, the staff were nothing but professional and extremely polite. I will definitely be going back.

It’s really impressive that this used to be a jail… either it was a very luxurious white collar style prison (which it was not according to a 1973 court ruling) or they did a great job rehabbing it (more likely). The rooms are spacious and very comfy but they’ve done a really nice job running with the prison theme…“Do Not Disturb” signs are instead listed «Solitary» and there are keys, iron bars, safes, etc decorations throughout. This does not diminish the overall comfortable feel of the place.
The food service was okay; we had catering from the hotel for our business meetings and I’ll say the food overall was solid if not superlative.
The lobby is spacious and airy. The service is friendly. The only minor hiccup I had was lukewarm water in the shower. It was apparently a system-​wide problem and the staff made it up to me with some extra SPG points. So no hard feelings there.
It’s close to Mass General and a Tube station so it’s a great base of operations for visits to Boston. Would definitely stay here again.

Probably by far one of the best places to go in Boston to grab a drink. The hotel trendy, people are dressed to impress, and the space is huge. Drinks are $$$, but in-​line with what you would get in NYC. There were a lot of people but plenty of space to just walk around.

I’ve been here several times, either for college formals, nights at the bar, or their outdoor patio. Recently had a friend staying there so got to check out the rooms as well.
Rooms are pretty nice! Sizable, well decorated, with pretty bathrooms. Weirdly a lot of time-​themed things — lots of clocks. The only reason that came to mind was some terrible joke about doing your time, since it used to be a jail? Or waiting for your trial? Either way, a little odd.
The bar, patio, and downstairs area all get fairly crowded on weekend nights — it’s usually a mix of late 20, early 30 year olds (lots of MBAs) who can afford to pay for pricey drinks and enjoy the ambience. The dance area is fairly small but a good time, though the line to get in downstairs or the patio can seem arbitrarily long — and sometimes they make you wait outside in the cold!
I enjoy it if I’m nearby and really want to dance, or for casual drinks at the lobby bar. Otherwise, the wait, cost, and crowdedness aren’t really worth it. Would recommend staying there though! I believe it’s part of the Starwood group.

Overpriced but good. Great location, all-​in-​one hotel with restaraunts, clubs and bars — love that place! Especially, I appreciate their fashion nights. Go checkout the new styles.

This is an iconic location that every tourist and Bostonian should appreciate .
It’s not every day that I get to have dinner at a Fancy Hotel with amazing views and have a self guided historical tour of a piece of history.
Maybe the next time I’m in Boston I get to stay at this hotel, the ideal location leads me to believe the skyline and city views are the most breathtaking that this city has to offer.

What a cool hotel! We stayed here recently for two nights, and probably one of the best hotels we’ve stayed at, despite the slightly higher price tag.
It’s an old jail that’s been converted into a hotel, so the motif is all jail-​related (I would’ve figured this out alot earlier considering the lobby is decorated with old jail cell doors, but since I had a red-​eye and layover, I’m giving myself a break on that one). The staff and service here are extremely attentive — we had booked a King and they ended up checking us into a room with two Queens. When I called the front desk, they quickly switched our room and sent a bellboy up with the new room keys so that I wouldn’t have to head back downstairs to pick them up.
It’s a super trendy place with a restaurant and bar, so theoretically, you could enjoy yourself without ever having to leave the hotel. It does get noisier at night with the nightlife and I was worried it would carry down the hallways, but we had no issues with the noise level.
Parking is valet only ($ 50/​night for hotel guests), but it’s also right by the red line station if you choose to take public transportation from Logan. Free wifi for hotel guests, and complimentary champagne when you check-​in!
Also, on a slightly unrelated note, great stay for those trying to quit drinking…$ 60 for 250ml of Grey Goose from the hotel room mini bar.

Great stay and service! Have a drink before a night out in Boston. Don’t forget to do a little exploring. :)

My husband stayed here while I was in the hospital. I stayed one Night here, with him. It’s a lovely hotel. Very nice fixtures. And a comfy bed. I would like to return when I’m feeling well. And take advantage of the beautiful hotel, it’s accommodations and restaurants. There looks like a gorgeous bar downstairs.

The award for service goes to the doormen and women and the front desk! My husband and I stayed at the Liberty this weekend. What a great place for a quick night away! Room was recently remodeled, spacious, clean and comfortable. The folks at the front door were kind and helpful and not at all over bearing. Same for the front desk.
This would have been a five star review– but I was SO disappointed with the service at the lobby level bar. We ordered some late night snacks and it was obvious this was a total annoyance to the guy working behind the bar. I was shocked when we had to ask him to bring our food from the bar (that we had to notice came out of the kitchen) to our table, and when he arrived asked us with a snide tone –where am I going to put it? I know it was late, but very unprofessional. If we go back– I’ll be sure to try one of the other bars instead.

Guys. I don’t need to tell you that this hotel is one of the best and most beautiful in the city. What I do need to tell you is about the service. Welcome champagne, the nicest staff you’ve ever been greeted by, and surprising treats that are beyond what we expected. One extra shout out: Jill (who greeted us when we checked in) is the absolute best. Thanks for taking such great care of us!

The Catwalk bar manager should be fired. We sat down, and he checked our IDs. Our friends who didn’t have theirs went back to the hotel to collect it.
So we were cool about it and ordered some drinks first. 5 mins later he came back, cooked up a story that our friend tried to sneak back from the back.
We later found out that that didn’t happen at all. The manager just cooked up a lie and kicked us out. Yeah some of us were in sneakers and not your target yuppies group but perhaps you should have rejected us from the start instead of making us look like fools.
We are in Boston from Australia and Singapore for a business trip. The poor experience just ruined it and we are not going to that bar or staying at the hotel again.
Run guys, don’t step it the place is full of bullsh*t.

I love coming here for drinks. This is an old jail, turned hotel, and now a sophisticated bar in the lobby or downstairs at Alibi.
You come here for the ambiance — b/​c the drinks are pricey. On Wednesdays– usually they have Yappy hours in the courtyard (when it isn’t so damn cold) and you can bring your dogs for water/​treats when you enjoy your own beverage of choice. On Thursday is a fashion show that features some local designers and others. And generally, it’s the busiest on Fridays/​Sundays.
Please note that there is no parking on site, but valet, or you can try to find a side street/​take the T to MGH and it’s across the street.

I have not stayed in the Liberty. I had a brief sampling at Scampo but didn’t check out any of the other spots at the Liberty.
But what I did do was the Bloody Mary bar.
And the Bloody Mary bar was phe-​nom-​e-​nal.
It was DIY, and when I say DIY, I say it was DIY. You get the vodka from the bar and then have tomato juice or clamato juice or Bloody Mary mix to put in with it. Then there are peppers, pickles, cheese, cucumbers, bacon salt, and even Slim Jims. It’s an epic spread of things to put in and around the drink.
It was expensive. One Bloody Mary is $ 13. Yikes. But still, for this spread, it was worth it. My god, what a spread.

I must say that this hotel is a bit of a let down, given what they are charging. The rooms are fine — toiletries in particular are really nice, but for $ 500+/night, there’s just not enough here to justify that cost. Cue the standard non-​fitted sheets, but I don’t expect anything different from Starwood at this point. The beds were comfortable enough, that aside.
My real complaint relates to the working space — on this particular trip I spent a good amount of time working with both coworkers and alone, from the common areas of the hotel and from my room, and in neither case was there any comfortable workspace. Much like the Le Meridien in Cambridge, there were just low couches and coffee tables with no power in the common areas (and from what I could tell, no club lounge, at least, not that I had access to), a recipe for back pain after a little while. In the room, the desks featured non-​adjustable height chairs and no power outlets on top of the desks — it’s 2015, who would want to plug something in without moving furniture? I did fill out the customer survey afterwards, and someone contacted me (which I do appreciate) to let me know that rooms were being renovated soon, but the pictures of the renovated rooms featured the same stylish but uncomfortable looking and non-​adjustable chairs that I’m complaining about in the first place.
Overall, the hotel was… fine…just ludicrously overpriced and not comfortable for the amount of work I was doing from the hotel on this particular stay. Would I come back? No, not on purpose. There have to be cheaper properties in this city, so unless *everything* was $ 500+/night, I wouldn’t book this on purpose. At least they were participating in the SPG double points promo… so…now I have gobs of points that I can redeem for hotels I don’t like all that much. Hmm.

I like hanging out at the liberty, also stayed several times.
I have not been to their events but noticed they always have something going on. Many friends rave about the doggy cocktail hour, and I love taking my French bulldog to hang at the bar!

Our fourth time staying here. I really don’t know why we will ever stay anywhere else in Boston. The staff understands hospitality. Anything you want (random things this weekend were — room service champagne under $ 60, stinky cheese, two umbrellas, peppermint tea, within last 18 or so hours) all done without skipping a beat. Looking forward to the remainder of our stay here.
Sunday update: Rest of our stay was just as good. Love this hotel!!!

This is one of the coolest hotels I have ever been in and what a great history. It was built as a jail in the mid-1800’s. The hotel lobby has a gigantic atrium. The lobby bar is called the Clink! The lounge is the Alibi Lounge. The décor is stunning, the meeting rooms are beautiful.
The upper floors have lounge areas that over look the lobby below.
There is a great vibe and terrific people watching.

We stayed here in August and had a fabulous time. The history of this hotel is so interesting how it use to be the Charles Street jail. Don’t worry no bad juju at this hotel from past prison spirits as Buddhist Monks were brought to cleanse each hotel room and ward away any lingering spirits. I love this stuff and was actually hoping to feel some chills or hear creepy noises, but nothing.
The architectural design of the Liberty is so creative how they were able to keep so much of the former jail history in tact including original cells and bars. In the restaurant CLINK (love the name) Slate tiles among the wood floor denote the footprint and exact size of the old cells. The cat walks are now balconies in the hotel’s atrium. Alibi, the bar below CLINK., was the jail’s drunk tank and many famous people slept one off there. The hotel has a mini museum which details the building’s transformation from jail to hotel.
Such an amazing place to visit and stay. The hotel is a little pricey but what a treat. Great bar and restaurants. The staff is so nice, rooms are so clean and comfortable. However beds aren’t the same as the Westin with their sweet sleeper beds.

Overall I’m not happy with my decision to stay at The Liberty Hotel.
The good;
The hotel staff are all professional and very customer friendly. This except one bartender I had to deal with to be mentioned later. They staff was kind enough to get me another room when the original given to me was unsatisfactory. However, Then I had to wait over an hour. They led me to believe it would be just a minute otherwise I would gone somewhere instead of waisting 2 hours of my trip standing near check in area. The room I was finally moved to was on the 10^th floor with a partial view of the park and river. The bathroom shower was really tight. I’m a big guy and appreciate space. Saturday & Sunday mornings they have a really nice Bloody Mary Bar. The history and layout of this hotel is really interesting.
That’s about it good…
The bad~
On the last night after dinning out every night of my trip I had an idea after reading the Hotel Resturant menu in the room that the pizza at the «Clink» looked really good, so I head down to try it out. Big mistake! I get down to the «Clink» at 9pm and it’s a loud underage dry-​humping dance orgy going on. Discussing! I ask at the bar tender if I could get me a pizza to go and he tells me NO! He said I have to order from the room so I can pay 5X the regular outrageous price…
I move fast to get away from this repulsive display of underage dry porn! Back upstairs to the 2^nd level bar to have a drink and discover they are $ 25ea? For Dewars call brand on the Rocks? Not McCallan’s 18 year old scotch? Unacceptable! By the time I get done with this hassle, it’s too late to go out I’m forced to eat from room service. This knowingly I’m going to hammered! They are out of the outrageously priced pizza. I ordered one Cheese-​Burger all the way, fries and two can drinks. Once again, the bill is like $ 60.00 with a tip.
After they rip you $ 475-​$ 650 a night for a room, the continuos raping you with any of the extras is just isn’t worth it at the Liberty. This is a nice place, but managed horribly! Not even close the class of the 4-​Seasons, the Ritz Carlton or even the JW Marriott for that matter, but the price should demand it.
I stayed at the Hotel Commonwealth a week later and got a much better room nearly half the price. This with much better restaurants and locations in walking distance.

This is a beautiful and creative space that I enjoyed while having a drink and appetizers on the 2^nd floor while live jazz played in the background. It’s hard to beat the jail-​themed classy atmosphere, and the drinks and appetizers were delicious. I especially enjoyed the lamb sliders which were similar to burger sliders but filled with a very tender juicy lamb burger. The chicken tenders were fresh and tasty for fried chicken tenders, but there was no condiment served or offered with them. Pretty plain. The drinks are pricey but robust and well crafted.
My biggest issue with this place — ok, I’m going to sound cheap — is the $ 25 valet parking fee. I stayed for an hour and a half for dinner, and there is a $ 25 parking flat fee that is similar to an overnight parking fee at a nice hotel? Seriously? If guests are going to spend the kind of money required by the bars and restaurants at this hotel, a validation or more reasonable fee would appropriate. I sure hope I get a free drink next time for such a ridiculous charge.
Other than the parking, I loved it, but the best deal is probably just to stay.

2.5 star room. 3.5 star lobby.
They must have scraped the bottom of the barrel for our visit. Just shocked that it was designated a 4.5 star luxury hotel.
Stained carpet. Paint peeling from ceiling. Towels like sandpaper. Staff waiting in front of main entrance didn’t open the door for us half the time. Room had a view of a hospital wall. Flimsy charger outlets.
Priceline express deal for $ 433 w/​tax. Plus $ 50/​nt parking.
Supposedly a 4.5 star hotel, but more like a 4.5 star disappointment.

Obsessed, obsessed, obsessed. Where do I begin? Okay, it was a little difficult to find and the traffic on the street was horrific, but other than that… what an amazing hotel. We checked in around 3pm, Mark at the front desk was fantastic, he even gave us two free glasses of champagne before we went to the room. Awesome. We stayed in a suite, which was huge and had the most amazing views of the city. The living is large and has a couch, a chair, a flat screen, a diving room table and floor to ceiling windows, as well as a ½ bathroom. The bathroom was huge, rainforest shower, and a tub, as well as a toilet with a separate door. The bedroom took my breath away! The bed was a huge king size bed and super comfortable and the floor to ceiling windows with spectacular views of the city… lets just say I was speechless upon arrival. We ordered room service on a Tuesday night at 12:30am and the food came within 30 minutes and was really good, the room service menu overall is pretty extensive and they serve food until 2am or so which is awesome. At one point we called and ordered more towels, and they were quick to bring them to us, which was awesome.
The hotel was an old jail, which is super cool, and with that being said, the lobby has huge high ceilings and killer balconies on all the floors, as well as jail cell bars on the windows. The restaurant downstairs, Alibi, also keeps the jail theme and has mug shots of celebrities who have been arrested and what they were arrested for. We went to the Liberty bar around 4:30pm and had some drinks and snack, the food was really tasty… loved the burrata cheese, the crispy chicken skewers, the poached shrimp and the tuna lollipops. The bartenders were all super sweet. Nick was awesome, and the manager at Clink, James, came over and chatted with us for a bit too. They had some pretty killer cocktails too.
After we went to dinner we came back to the hotel and went to the bar at Alibi around midnight. The inside bar was pretty dead, but we were able to sit outside and have a cocktail. I loved the adorable couches that were setup. I love that the hotel has multiple bar and restaurant options.
The hotel also has a courtyard which looked like they might have had an event going on.
My only complaint is the location, it’s next to a hospital so there were ambulances everywhere and the street was jam packed. It is next to the subway though, which is convenient. However, I didn’t think it was walking distance to too many restaurants or shopping, but there is the water and a cute park close by. Oh yes, and there is free wi-​fi in the rooms, but I had trouble getting wi-​fi in the lobby and the people working there couldn’t figure it out either…
I’m really glad I didn’t pay the bill as the hotel itself is expensive, but I loved my experience and definitely made me want to stay here next time I’m in Boston!

This review is for the hotel’s lobby bar — the service was atrocious, though the drinks were good and the space was amazing!
I was thrilled to be having drinks at the historic prison-​turned-​luxury-​hotel Liberty, and came with high expectations. Unfortunately, the Sunday evening service was truly horrendous. After seating ourselves in the lobby, we had to ask for a waitress multiple times before anyone came to take our orders. Our first round of ($ 15 each) drinks took a while to come out, and our popcorn took even longer. The waitress never came by to check on us, and we had to go find her to place our second round orders. Also, our waitress had an attitude, which was unexpected and off-​putting. For an upscale place with premium prices, we expected much better service.
The drinks — to the Liberty’s credit — were quite good. I loved both the Light and Sunny (refreshing) and Besame (crisp and light). The truffle salt popcorn was also tasty.
The Liberty lobby is stunning, and it was great to see what a classy, elegant space this former prison has been converted to.
All said — the lobby bar really needs to work on its service. Ugh.

Yappy hour was so much fun! Thank you Liberty Hotel for being so dog-​friendly. My pup and I, and our friends had a great time at this weekly event. The patio/​backyard was gorgeous and allowed my dog to be off-​leash. There were over 30 dogs running around playing with each other and I got the opportunity to drink, hang out with friends, and meet new people. Wish they had more seating though. Maybe I only liked it because we had a waitress at our table, but it might have been difficult otherwise to get a drink or a seat.

This hotel is super cool! I’m sure that many have commented on the fact that this used to be a jail and that in itself is what makes it cool. They did an exceptional job of keeping the «yard» in tact while making it classy. I love the multiple elements that still speak to the jail theme.
The rooms: Spacious and well appointed with Molton Brown products. They do offer the larger options in the shower, but our room attendant was kind enough to give us travel size ones also. When I arrived, they placed a nice bottle of wine and a cupcake for my birthday with a handwritten note. This was greatly appreciated.
Service: The concierge was so great! He made so many great recommendations and we loved all of them. At one point, he even called me because he thought of more options that we should do while out exploring. The bubbles at arrival is also a nice touch.

Cette ancienne prison du 19è a fermé en 1990. Le bâtiment de granit a été préservé et l’intérieur transformé pour en faire un hôtel de luxe très original, inauguré en septembre 2007. Barreaux et cellules authentiques associés à un design subtil créent une atmosphère étonnamment agréable. Possibilité de visiter en s’adressant au concierge, de dîner (chic) ou de prendre un thé au bar. Très original. A voir.

Das wohl luxuriöseste Gefängnis der Welt!
Perfekt modern gestyltes Hotel im ehemaligen Gefängnis von Boston. Zentrale Lage mit allen Annehmlichkeiten die man von solch einem Hotel, Leading hotels of the World, erwartet. Auch die Restaurants im Hause sind hervorragend. Ich habe leider überhaupt nichts zu mosern.
(Das man dort nicht für 50 Euro die Nacht absteigt ist wohl unnötig zu erwähnen)
