Our mission at Boulder Cycle Sport is to provide the highest level of customer service and to offer cycling products we trust and use ourselves. Whether you are a first time rider, recreational enthusiast or an elite-​level racer, Boulder Cycle Sport strives to be the foremost resource for all your cycling needs.

Two University of Colorado graduates, Taro Smith and Brandon Dwight, founded Boulder Cycle Sport in January 2005 in order to provide a community-​based bike shop for all levels of cyclists.

History

Established in 2005.

Since the mid-​Nineties, Taro and Brandon have been avid cyclists and competitive racers. Taro holds undergraduate and master’s degrees in the areas of Stress and Exercise Physiology and a Ph.D. in Integrative Physiology. His professional background includes the development of exercise models of rehabilitation as well as product development and marketing work for various medical and fitness companies. He also conducts research in the fields of exercise physiology and immunology. Brandon graduated from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology in 1995 and was a nationally ranked professional mountain bike racer from 1999 to 2002. Today he ranks as one of the top cyclocross racers in the country and is a three-​time U.S. Cyclocross National Champion. With a combined 35 years of pedaling in Boulder, Brandon and Taro have deep roots and a vast knowledge of Boulder’s cycling community.

Fantastic service. I purchased an MTB here a few years ago, and despite the brand no longer being sold by BCS, their service team went well out of their way to ensure I had a very good experience and rode away with my bike in very good condition. I had a complicated manufacturer problem and BCS handled it very well. Yes, I spent some dough, but my troubles were resolved and BCS mechanics went way out of their way to ensure I had a good experience and my bike was in beautiful condition. Mechanic talked with me for a long while about how to care for my bike. These guys rock!

I love this bike shop and especially all they do for women cyclists. The shops and especially the restrooms and dressing rooms (super important to women) are clean, organized, and welcoming. Staff from the sales floor to the service shop is friendly, non-​condescending (again important to women), and incredibly knowledgeable. A shout-​out for the mechanic Wes, who gives DIY suggestions to help save $ but will correctly fix the problem if you need to pay the shop. I’ve had great deals on bikes, lovin’ my Focus CX bike they sold me. RaeLynn is amazing in attracting women to the sport and store. She sets up events from fun women’s nights, indoor spinning and rides to skill-​improving sport psychology/​nutrition/​health seminars. Both locations have been awesome to work with.

I have been taking my Velo Vie Vitesse 300R to this shop since 2011, as well as our 1997 Burley Duet tandem and more recently my spouse’s Bianchi. I would agree with some about a cashier and two mechanics who were aloof and dismissive in the past; however, I continued to stay with this shop because they are easiest for me access and they had other strengths — they would go the extra mile with me when I spoke with them about an odd charge on my credit card once, as well as finding a an old part for the tandem. That was mainly folks from the south side shop.
So I would go to another local shop for parts, etc., until last year when I noticed the mechanics at their NoBo shop were more costumer focused, as well as those in the retail shop up the street.
In my opinion this is what Unilocal vis a vis local business is about. The shop got feedback and makes changes to earn my business.
So I’m a fan of the NoBo shop.

Boulder Cycle Sports was one headache after the other. I came in to get a new fork, and when they ordered a new one they ordered one that was not compatible with my front brake so they ordered a new one WITHOUT CALLING ME and costing me more money. They will order products without your consent and are also terrible at communication. My parts took 3 weeks to arrive from who they said was an in state supplier so I was always wanting am update. They won’t call you about what is going on, even if you ask them too specifically. I even gave them my email telling me it was imperative they keep me posted. Still nothing. When I finally picked up my bike, the service employee just kept talking about how my bike really wasn’t for me and I should buy a brand new one at there store. Yeah Right.
I seriously have never been as dissapointed in a business as I was with the South Boulder Cycle Sports (I have no comment for the North Boulder location, I have never been there). Taro Smith and Brandon Dwight, the founders, should open their eyes to how awful the service section of the South Boulder location is. That’s if they haven’t lost enough customers to go bottoms up in a few years anyways. This is how terrible my experience was. Don’t ever take your bike there.

As with others I agree, elitist employees in the service department. Took a fork in to get installed and cut to 2.5 inches above the headset. When I came back the fork had NOT been cut! The service staff was generally inattentive. After remedying the situation they charged me $ 50. For that money I could buy the tools to do the installation myself…

I have been going to the North Shop for years now, and have continually had great customer service. I have had in-​depth conversations on quite a variety of topics, to include tread patterns on cross tires to the purchase of new bikes. They really set themselves apart and provide a first class experience starting with the products they stock to following through after your purchase if you have any issues (ie: setting up cross brakes so they don’t chatter). The staff really know their stuff and they also support all the local cycling organizations and events, especially the Boulder Mountain bike Alliance and Valmont Bike Park. This shows a further commitment to the community, and I like knowing that by supporting them, I am supporting the local cycling organizations. You would be well served to check them out the next time you are in need of a bike shop, or heck, even a pint glass or a «Dopers Suck» shirt.

So a little background… I bought my bike at another «Boulder Bike Store». I’m traditionally a «loyal customer guy», so to leave a place that I’ve already spent thousands of $$$s at is a pretty big deal. And thats exactly what I’ve done. So I bought this sweet Cervelo (and by the way, you guys picking up this product is huge to me) and I needed a few tweaks and adjustments that honestly I tried to do myself. I just wasn’t satisfied with my work after taking it out and just not vibing my new ride. And I’m getting to my point… I was talking it over with my buddy and his suggestion was, «Dude, you need to find a mechanic you trust and that knows you and your bike.» Enter Katie to Story — I drove up to BCS north on a Saturday afternoon and met Katie. I told her about my adjustments and how my front derailler still just wasn’t right. A short story made long, now trying to make short again, Katie knew exactly what to do and she is «my girl» (respectfully speaking). I dig her. She knows her job and does it with a smile. I only disagree with her on 1 thing, she actually is a good saleswoman, she’s sold me on BCS.
Again sir… strong work on the hiring front. I’m «singing your praises» too all who will listen. Take care and continue the wonderful customer service I’m telling people about.

I just moved to Boulder, so obviously I bought a bike (on craigslist, there’s no way I can afford a $ 400 bike). I was in need of a helmet and a lock, and these guys sent me a coupon in the mail so I gave it a shot. The guy helping me was friendly and pretty informative, but you could tell the shop was very elitist. When he asked what I wanted in a helmet, I just said «nothing fancy, I’ll just be riding to and from class», he looked at me like I was nuts. While no one was rude to me, I did feel a little out of place as a beginner biker. I’ve had better service elsewhere, but the coupon was a decent deal.

I am an avid mountain and road biker chick and Boulder Cycle Sports is close to where I live. I thought I would give them a try: I was very disappointed to say the least …
I would have to agree with other reviewers when I say the place is full for cyclist elitist employees. If you are not a pro athlete (although I am a serious biker and race recreationally) and/​or not in there to buy anything specific, they don’t want anything to do with you. I got into a bike accident on my mountain bike (I fractured my scapula) and I could not ride my bike for a while. When I walked in there to look around for fun and possibly buy a new jersey (because my bike jersey was ripped up from the accident), one of the employees ask me: «Well, if you can’t ride, what are you doing in here?» I was appalled!!!
And if you are a woman (not a pro athlete woman), forget it!
And I would NEVER recommend this place to get a mountain bike. I got my mountain bike fitted and they did a terrible job (they fitted me as if I was riding a road bike). I then had them adjust the stem and they put the cap on upside down! I asked about that and they just shrugged their shoulders. They didn’t care and they don’t seem to have pride in their work.
I usually say buy local, but Boulder Cycle Sport is an exception to the rule …
Other alternative places would be: Sports Garage (for buying road and mountain bikes) and Vecchio’s (for road bike service).

Went into thew shop to look for a road bike… New kid there was very helpful and cool. Then the owner-​looking guy helps us out with no problem, even let us use the computer to look up reviews on the bike.

After doing almost all of my wrenching (bike repair) for years, I kinda hit the wall with the brakes on my cross bike. I could not get them installed correctly or in a timely fashion. So my favorite bike was sitting unusable. I finally had to do what for me is one of those really embarrassing things: take you bike to the shop with botched repair.
I opted to try Boulder Cycle Sport. They seemed new enough that I would have a chance at being anonymous.
Duane in the shop took my bag of parts, partially disassembled bike, and bruised ego in without batting an eye. Since it was a snowy day, he called a 3 hours later and the job was done perfectly for a reasonable fee. Rare to have a shop in Boulder that does not have an attitude and my experience with these guys was distinctly minus attitude.

This place is full of cycling elitist employees. I went in there with my kids one time, and they have kids bikes on the floor, my four-​year-​old hops on a bike and the person yelled at him for biking in the shop.
I responded back telling the guy to chill out. He didn’t like that much.
Since I live in North Boulder, I thought it would be great to have bike shop close by. Come to find out they don’t want to service the community at large, just those people that wear logo bike jerseys.

This is a relative newcomer to the Boulder bike store scene. I went to the store on Saturday. Even though it was busy, the staff person spent time with me and helped me with bikes.
But he didn’t do any kind of bike sitting or fit. If you’re going to be spending any kind of $$ above $ 1,000 I highly recommend going to a bike store that does bike sittings, like Sports Garage. If you know what you’re looking for, and just want a good deal, I think this would be a great place to shop.
