With more than 20 years of accounting experience, including respected positions with Ernst & Young and Merrill Lynch, Mark is a hands-​on authority on comprehensive business planning, tax planning and preparation, accounting system set-​up and training, financial documentation, and technology systems training and implementation. When he is not helping clients, Mark enjoys spending time with his family — wife Pam and boys Tyler and Ryan — and enjoying the outdoors and is passionate about cycling and running.

We have been using The Sunderland Group for our tax preparation for the past several years. We have been extremely pleased with both the timeliness, professionalism and cost of this service. While we don’t generally have complicated taxes, we had a couple years which consisted of some tricky accounting. Mark and his team have been so pleasant and helpful in getting not only those resolved, but also most recently amended returns based on an amended tax document received from several years ago. Short of getting into all of our personal financial details, they’ve just been plain amazing and have made the process 100% painless (and I generally RUN from anything tax-​related)!
The company has a website for information and document sharing which makes the process that much easier and smoother. I can access past years tax documents easily in addition to uploading my documents for tax preparation.

My wife and I have been utilizing the services of The Sunderland Group for a few years. I couldn’t say anything negative about their services, its exactly what your would expect from a small CPA shop.
Each year we get plenty of warning and early advise on changes in the tax code which we should be aware of and more importantly, plan to take advantage of to maximize our return.
Since this isn’t some 100 person accounting firm, we realize that if we don’t get our information to them with enough time (FYI, they send out multiple warning emails about the last date they can get your documents and still have enough time to provide you with the quality return you expect), we should expect to have them file an extension.
I highly recommend The Sunderland Group!

I use the Sunderland Group as a full service one stop shop for my accounting needs. I’m a small business owner who went into this game somewhat green about some aspects of the financial side of my profession. I needed not only someone I could trust, but someone I could rely on to keep me on track and make sure I did not have to worry about the things I really don’t want to stress about.
Sundy is perfect for this. He is very responsive to all my needs and questions. Every email is answered within minutes. I can pick up the phone and speak to him. My office manager has open communication with his book keepers. If I need to sit and talk in person I can. He doesn’t nickle and dime either, I like the flat rate system. At first I just had him doing my taxes, he instantly found areas of improvements over my previous returns. But after seeing that he’s bright and knows his stuff I moved my payroll and book keeping over to him as well. It has so far been handled without issue or concern.
My accounting needs are pretty complex, and I feel safe with him handling them. As long as I do my part in giving him the things he needs when he needs them then I’m in good shape.

If you value your money or your time, steer clear of this guy as a CPA for either your personal finances or small business (the two areas I’ve worked with him on).
He’s actually a likable guy — but a terrible accountant.
Specifically, it”s April 4th and I’ve been waiting to hear when he’d have my small company’s taxes finished, as well as my joint return with my wife. He then tells me in an irritated tone that we’ll have to file an extension (i.e. not file our taxes on time).
I told him that was unacceptable because I have investors counting on him to get our taxes done on time, and to make a long story short, he then got upset and REFUSED to even complete the returns he had already started!!! On April 4th. Totally unprofessional and unbelievable.
So April 15th is less than 2 weeks away, and my family is basically screwed because of Mark Sunderland (and so is my small business and my investors).
Again — if you value your time or money, stay away from this firm and find a CPA who actually cares about their clients and takes some responsibility for the impact they have on their clients’ lives.
