Bowie State University

I thought it would only be right to write a review of my alma mater on the sesquicentennial (150^th) year celebration!
I am proud to say I attended Bowie State University for my undergraduate and graduate studies. It’s not only one of the more affordable university’s in the area, but it’s also in a very convenient location. MARC train and Metro Bus accessible, Bowie State University is tucked away in historical Bowie, Maryland on 300 acres of land. Bowie State University was founded in 1865 and is Maryland’s oldest historically black college/​university. It falls under the umbrella of the University System of Maryland, along with University of Maryland and Frostburg State University, to name a few.
One of the most underrated and overlooked university’s in the area, but don’t sleep on BSU because they have 22 undergraduate majors and 38 master’s, doctoral, and advanced certification programs with specific focus on science, technology, business, education and related disciplines. Their nursing program is top ranked and being accepted into this program is very difficult and competitive.
Over the years, the school has grown so much, that they’ve built new buildings and made several renovations to older buildings. Some of the professors I’ve had the pleasure of being taught by, have become good friends and confidants. I regularly keep in touch with some of them and they genuinely are concerned about my well being. I’m not going to write this review and act as if BSU is perfect, because like all colleges, some issues will arise, but I do know that when I graduated, I was prepared for the work force with the knowledge Bowie State University provided me. In addition, I came out of college DEBT FREE! So while you’re adamant about going to Towson or The University of Maryland (both wonderful schools), check their college tuition and compare it to BSU and let me know how that works out for you. Oh and did I mention the Homecoming’s? Hmmm… yeah, you’ve never been to a college homecoming, until you’ve experienced it at BSU!
Bowie State University is like home! The warmth, the love and the genuine care I feel when I step on campus is indescribable. I met some of my very best friends, experienced my most difficult challenges and conquered some major hurdles, all at this University. As a first generation college graduate in my family, (PAUSE) I’m so proud of that, let me say that one more time, as a first generation college graduate in my family, I can appreciate the love and the pride that BSU alums have for their school. The term papers, mid-​terms, finals, group projects, thesis, summer courses, they were all done here, for the betterment of me. More often than enough, I couldn’t see it then, but I look back at those times now and see how what I learned then, has assisted me now.
So NO, we aren’t battling to see who is the «Real H-​U» (BTW…it’s Howard… IJS) and NO our sports aren’t usually mentioned on the local sports stations (FYI– BSU’s Football Team is currently 5 – 1) and NO you don’t need a shuttle bus to drive around our quaint campus, but YES, we have a lot of HEART and YES, we have a lot of PRIDE and YES, you’ll be pushed/​encouraged beyond belief to achieve your goals. Thank you Bowie State University for assisting me on my path to becoming the educated strong woman I am today! I will forever be true to the Black and the Gold! BSUUUUUUUUU!
I’ll end this review with BSU’s school song:

So far so good. It’s what we expected. I dropped off my former student for his new student orientation!!! The on boarding process was welcoming and I’m confident that this will be a great fit for him!!!

Bowie State University is not aimed for upcoming professionals; don’t expect greatness while you are student or as a graduate.
There are a lot of things wrong with the school, but what immediately gets a one star from me is the lack of support in job placement.
The students are responsible for seeking jobs and making themselves worthy candidates, but the school fails to promote their business and secure meaningful partnerships with corps looking for forthcoming employees.
There are career fairs and events, but you would be fortunate to find something that fits into your major or expertise.
My friends who are current and past graduates now regret not transferring when they had the chance to. As a new transfer student to the University of Maryland, College Park most of my credits from Bowie are not compatible with Maryland’s higher standards (the institution that supports their successful alumni).
Conclusion: go to a school where the institution has a track record of accomplished students, i.e. Georgetown, University of Virginia, Penn State, University of Michigan, etc.

The school is being newly renovated. So far they have built and is operating an $ 80 million, state of the art performing arts building. The campus isn’t big. Or should I say, small enough to walk everywhere. They have new dorm rooms that offer a cozy place to sleep (when you can) if I was a college student living on campus, I’d like it. They are also building a new recreations building.

Unfortunately, I WOULD NOT recommend Bowie State University to anyone. Most of the kids are very immature and ghetto *gasps*. I live in the only on-​campus apartment and the other students treat it like a section 8 project. Speaking with staff members in the offices are a headache at times. They act as if you are disturbing them by asking them to do their job. The cafeteria food is mediocre. I transferred in and unfortunately, I haven’t learned anything new. I am transferring out and I am counting down the days. Just last night an on-​campus concert was shut down because of numerous fights and even after everyone cleared out of the building more fights started. It seemed like a riot. Most of the security guards/​police officers are a joke. I was here when a girl lost her life because of an altercation between herself and her roommate. An event which could have been prevented if Residence Life did their jobs in assigning rooms. Parking is bad. Most kids come here and spend most of the day in the game room or smoking weed in the dorms and on campus apartments. I am an out-​of-​state student so unlike most in state kids who come here because of the affordable education, I came here because it was the only school who’s application deadline was the latest (this is what I get for waiting til the last minute to relocate). There are some great professors then there are some professors who come to simply get a paycheck. Go to UMUC, UMD, Towson, HU, anywhere but here unless you like the nonsense this school will put you through.

Underrated by far!
I am grateful for the opportunity that Bowie State University gave me by providing a way for me to earn my Masters degree right out of college. Very affordable and the graduate programs are designed for the working adult. They offer on site and hybrid classes (combination of in class and online courses). Anyone looking to continue their education in or transition into the IT industry should definitely look into Bowie State’s Master’s of Science Management Information Systems program. They have 3 different concentrations to choose from: Information Security Management Concentration, Digital Business and Knowledge Management Concentration, and a general Information Systems Management Concentration. Personally, I choose the Information Security Management concentration since that is where my career pursuit lie at the moment. BSU has tons of other programs that they offer that I wasn’t even aware of until I became a student. Most of the professors were great and the small class size made it easier to assist students on a one on one basis. On campus, the Bowie State Satellite Operations Control Center (BSOCC) is an orbiting satellite operation and control center allowing students to gain the hands-​on experience in such a facility. In 2003, the center went fully operational. It is a joint venture operated by the university, the Honeywell Corporation, the Goddard Space Flight Center of NASA in Greenbelt, MD. Also, they have some of the best job fairs in state… plenty of companies and government agencies are always in attendance.
I am very excited about the potential and growth of Bowie State University and I would encourage anyone looking for an institution of higher learning to attend to check this school out.
