Specialties
tart is a boutique and contemporary art gallery (although we prefer the term ‘tartique’) located in the Emerson Center for the Arts and Culture in Bozeman, Montana. tart is owned and operated by Anna Visscher, aka the tartress. We carry work by local and Montana artists (we call them tartists), much of which you won’t find anywhere else. We offer unique, handmade original art, jewelry, clothing, accessories, gifts and more. Much of what we carry contains recycled, vintage and found objects, and is as such one-of-a-kind.
History
Established in 2007.
tart is the brain child of Anna Visscher, aka the tartress. After years of making her own jewelry and selling it elsewhere, the tartress decided to jump off a cliff and open her own store. tart opened in February, 2007 in a shoebox of a space in the Emerson Center for the Arts and Culture. The original cast of characters included just 6 local tartists. It has grown to include over 50 local and Montana tartists making a little bit everything including jewelry, clothing, furniture, accessories, baby goods, art and more. With an emphasis on recycled, repurposed and sustainable materials, tart strives to support Montana artists while minimizing its environmental footprint. Oh — and getting you the very finest wearable and wallable art around.
In May of 2009 tart moved across the hall into a larger, brighter, more fabulous space. We expanded again in October 2010, opening a dooryway into an adjoining gallery and creating tartoo — a gallery featuring contemporary Montana artists.
Meet the Business Owner
Anna V.
Business Owner
Anna Visscher is the «tartress» of tart. In this capacity she manages day to day operations, teaches classes, stays up at night worrying and has an astoundingly large jewelry collection.
Before becoming the tartress she was a preschool teacher, a retail shop manager, a picture frame builder, a nanny, a photographer, a jewelry maker and a barista. When she’s not working in tart she goes for the world record in number of snooze button hits, scavenges obsessively at thrift stores, and makes up strange words with her hubby, actor/writer/teacher Kent Davis.
