History
Established in 1954.
The Puget Sound Navy Museum began operation as a not-for-profit on December 3, 1954. Named the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Museum, it was established by the U.S. Navy with Shipyard employees staffing the Museum.
In 1964, the City of Bremerton accepted custody of the Museum’s collection, and the Kitsap County Historical Society agreed to staff the Museum. The Museum reopened in 1967 as the Naval Shipyard Museum and operated in the WA State Ferry Terminal’s lobby until 1986 when it was demolished.
From 1986 until 2007, the Museum was referred to as the Bremerton Navy Memorial Museum as well as the Naval Museum of the Pacific. Volunteers staffed the Museum as it moved between several Bremerton locations.
In 2007, the Museum was renamed the Puget Sound Navy Museum and re-opened in the restored Building 50 located between the Shipyard and the WA State Ferry Terminal. At that time, the Museum became one of ten museums administered by the US Navy’s Naval History and Heritage Command.
