Square Root

This is a neat little restaurant hidden away in an alley in downtown Brevard. After checking out Oskar Blues and then Brevard Brewing (home of the cheapest growler I’ve ever seen), we stopped in for dinner on a weeknight and the place was surprisingly busy! After being told it would be about a 30 minute wait for a table, the hostess informed us that the bar area was available and she let us snag an open high-​top table in there.
We started with an order of the calimari, which was delicious. Very lightly fried and delicately seasoned. The tangy Asian sauce they provide is a nice pairing as well.
For dinner, we went with the Pimento Cheeseburger and the London Broil sandwich. Both were good and nicely-​prepared, but not completely outstanding. The winner of the night was our appetizer, which is a bit of a letdown since it was the first thing we had.
Service was okay — we were in the bar, so we had to share our slightly overburdened bartender with folks at the bar and others seated in the bar area. Resulted in a slower service and drinks running empty, but otherwise no issues.
Next time we’re in the area, I wouldn’t hesitate to stop back!

Had lunch there and it was great. It’s location in the alley off the busy street is very sweet. And we were able to take our 2 pups who enjoyed a cold bowl of water of this hot day. We loved it and our lunch was great and the service exceptional

After multiple endorsements, decided to try Square Root for dinner tonight. We were greated by a waiter thar was very familiar with the wine list and the menu. My husband had the pork and I had the trout. Both were amazing, paired with unique sides and ample portions. The service was
excellent for a relaxing meal in a quiet comfortable setting. Did not have dessert but elected to have chocolates from the shop across the alley Perfectly satisfying meal.

Square Root is a cool hip restaurant located in downtown Brevard, NC tucked away in an alley. The building itself if really cool with an industrial meets the outdoors feel. The floor inside the restaurant is interesting. There is ample outdoor seating. They have numerous local brews on tap and a decent selection of wine. The service was extremely friendly and efficient. I had the 6 cheese pasta purses with meat sauce. The dish was pretty good albeit a huge portion and a bit heavy. I really liked some of the other dishes ordered by my friends. They had the catfish, chicken Marsala, and burger. I tried the Marsala and the catfish which were both great. The burger looked juicy and perfectly cooked. Overall the atmosphere and service are really good. The food is good. I want to try more things on the menu before determining if this place is 4 or 5 stars.

Love the food here. We took my mom here for brunch. We started with beignets served with a cherry jubilee sauce — YUM
I had a breakfast burrito with gouda cheese grits. Excellent. Others in our party had Belgian waffles, omelets and Eggs Benedict. Everyone was happy with their choices.
I eat here every time I am in Brevard. I’ve never been disappointed with the food or service. the only. negative is that this place is really noisy. Even today when the restaurant had just opened and there were only two filled tables in the dining room, it was too noisy to carry on a decent conversation.

The service and food were wonderful, I definitely recommend the calamari and the London Broil Sandwich with the sweet potato chips. They were very tolerant of our 1 year old daughter who doesn’t like to stay still! Major points for that!
And my husband was a huge fan of the Key Lime Pie!

We took a table in the bar… great service and delicious food. The Fig and Grilled Chicken Salad was delicious!

We travel to Brevard at least twice a year to visit my mother and the white squirrels and we always eat at Square Root. Service was great and the food good. My son loved his Cuban sandwich that looked perfectly pressed and a cup of buffalo chicken soup. I had the soup, too, and wish I had gotten a bowl. The sweet potato chips were good, not as fresh as usual, but they were all gone. Two others had the London broil sandwich that disappeared quickly. My wife’s salad was on the special board, good toppings, way to much lettuce. Hard to eat without it falling out of the bowl. Some might welcome that. The dessert received the best review of all, sort sort of vanilla bean custard. Very pleasant lunch.

Tucked away on a charming alley off of Main St. This is a quaint spot. Food is average. Not bad but not delicious nor does it leave you wanting more. It satisfies. Each time we’ve been the food (proteins to be specific) are over seasoned and fries undercooked. The salads are good though. It is one of the better restaurants in Brevard. I would recommend it for a good salad and a low key atmosphere. Staff is friendly and that is always appreciated.

This was our first visit. Very pleasant décor, quiet and dimly lit. I chose the pork shank with mashed potatoes. Perfectly cooked and so tender it fell off the bone. my wife had sea scallops with squash risotto. again, perfect. The key lime pie was OK but nothing special. overall we were very please with the food and the service.

This little place is awesome! So, long story short, we took a mini-​trip from Asheville to Brevard to look at holiday decorations and window shop. It’s a lovely little town known for having white squirrels running around. Strange, but true.
Anyway, after wandering the small downtown area, we decided to grab dinner before heading back to the booming metropolis of Ashevegas. Lo and behold, tucked away in a side alley, we thankfully found Square Root.
It was a chilly day so we unfortunately did not have an opportunity to enjoy the outdoor patio, but we were pleasantly surprised by the ambience of the dining area and bar inside. The floors are really cool and made of small pieces of wood, the lighting is perfect, and the exposed brick wall makes for a very warm and inviting dining space.
The menu is somewhat small but everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. An added bonus is the local beer on tap!
I highly recommend stopping in for a meal if you’re in Brevard. I can’t wait to head back down this summer for a beer on the patio!

I used to like the Square Root … until tonight. My wife and I drove from Asheville to Brevard to meet friends for dinner. We had a reservation and, even though we arrived early, we were seated immediately. There were only 3 other tables occupied when we arrived. Our waitress was very helpful and took our orders at 6PM sharp. From there it was all downhill.
Twenty minutes after placing our order, the appetizer arrived! Gulp. All gone.
Now, just like Humphrey Bogart, we arrived in Casablanca … where we waited. And waited. And waited!
While we waited, the most unbelievably rude thing I have ever seen in a restaurant happened. Now, there was a band playing on the porch outside the bar. You couldn’t hear the band inside the restaurant. Also, there was a band hired by the restaurant and, I can only assume, was paid by the restaurant. Well, while sitting there slowly starving, a little kid (seriously, a little kid!) came to the table, shoved a bag hat full of money in front of us, and DEMANDED MONEY FOR THE BAND! So, I’m paying top dollar for a meal and the staff actually allows kids to panhandle their customers! The little busker wouldn’t move on until we told him to leave us alone.
Back at the foodless table, we waited. And waited. And waited!
Okay, 1 hour and 15 minutes later our food arrived. Two had tacos (which arrived limp as wet paper after a trip through the microwave), and I had a London Broil sandwich which, while still crunchy, was tepid at best. Replace crunchy with dried out and stale. In fact, after a wee bite of meat, my poor sandwich consisted of a whole bunch of caramelized onions. My wife had ordered mussels, the only meal of the four which actually required cooking. Hum. Maybe the kitchen forgot to boil her dinner? Well, they made up for it by drowning the poor creatures in garlic. My wife asked for more bread to eat with the broth. After waiting longer than anyone should expect, they actually charged her $ 1.50 for toast! I think the least they could have done was comp her the bread!
All in all I was quite thoroughly disappointed with a rather expensive, slow and very mediocre meal.

Almost three stars, but the distracted and dismissive attitude of the greeting hostess tipped the balance. I had the London Broil sandwich and it was tasty and filling, but the au jus was heavily salted. The side of fries were quite strange and the result of some bizarre cooking method (perhaps a type of flash frying?) Some of the shoestring fries were crispy on the outside but under-​cooked on the inside — something I’ve never experienced as under-​cooking usually means it’s also limp (a fate a few fries suffered), so in a way it’s a technical accomplishment, but not one to be proud of. We also had an appetizer of fried green tomatoes, and their take was not pleasant. They were extremely thick cuts and the interior had liquefied in spots. The crust was a heavy and thick coating similar to latex and required the strenuous application of a knife to pierce. They were drizzled with a Dijon mustard sauce, with the mustard flavor being exceptionally strong. So instead of complimenting or counterbalancing the tang of the tomato, it just added to the powerful twang and we didn’t bother finishing them. Our meal was further disturbed by a waitress propping open the door to the patio so the cigarette smoke could assault us. On the positive side of the atmosphere was the unique flooring.

We found this cool restaurant through Unilocal when we were going through Brevard. Its a great restaurant and I wish we had one in Columbia. Since we went on a Sunday, they were serving Brunch. The entire menu looked amazing, but I was craving a really good hamburger. Well, I got my wish. It was delicious!
The service we received was totally top notch. They were super busy, but each table received great attention. I can’t wait to go again and try something else on the menu. They have so many things to choose from. Give it a try if you’re heading through Brevard.

I really wanted to like Square Root. The menu looked pretty nifty, and I like fusion foods. In fact, I’d been looking forward to it my entire trip to Brevard after looking at their menu. So maybe I created unrealistic expectations in my head.
First off, I had trouble finding the place. It’s in an alley behind a café! Kind of cool walking down the alley though, definitely unique.
We sat in the bar because the dining room was filled. I actually didn’t mind, because I could watch some football while we ate =]. Our bartender had to do double duty of serving drinks to people at the bar and running over to our table for our food. But I have to say, I was impressed with her. She got it done, and she was friendly, even as she looked slightly stressed. So 5 stars for her!
We got the calamari. It was pretty good, and I’m happy our waittress/​bartender suggested getting both sauces, it was a good combo.
But… both my drinks were flat? I got a Pepsi, and it was flat. So I switched to a beer… also flat? Bummer.
Our dishes were a Mountain Trout and Fish Tacos. I dunno… the mountain trout filling just didn’t do it for me. I thought the «stuffed» part was kind of bland and just killed the fish flavor. I guess I wanted a bit more spice, with it being labelled Asian Fusion. Same thing with my wife’s fish tacos. Just no clear spice or taste, and the fried fish pieces were so big they kept falling out.
Overall, I was just disappointed with the food and drinks. Bummer. Maybe we caught them on an off-​night?

We met some friends here for lunch on a Friday on our way to Asheville. The décor was nice, but they sat us immediately and then the wait staff took a good 15 minutes to come to the table to even take our drink order. By that time, we were ready to order. I had a burger with some sauteed vegetables, which were both excellent. My friend had a chicken wrap, which was fine. Also, our other 2 friends are vegetarian and they were able to find suitable salads. Everything was fine, but nothing speical. The initial wait for service was annoying, to say the least.

We ended up showing up to this place with 8 people at 8:30 PM on a Friday and they were able to accommodate us. We were in town for a Birthday party and the Birthday boy had chosen this place because he is vegan and the menu says specifically at the bottom «Ask us which menu items can be made vegan». Anyway, I kind of felt sorry for him because the server could only tell us one appetizer that could be made vegan and salads obviously so I would not rely on that if you’re vegan.
For us meat eaters though, it was AMAZING. I had the Margherita Mahi and it was absolutely to die for. They also had Cypress Chardonnay for $ 7 which is a great price. Once again, I started eating my delicious entrée before I took the picture but you get the main idea. So good!
The service wasn’t the best but the food made up for it. :D

Totally stumbled on this place after a nice long day of hiking John Rock followed by a stop at the Hub and Oskar Blues; the decision was to just eat in the area. Couldn’t be happier about what I found, right in the middle of downtown is an alley where you find a lively little patio across from a chocolate shop. On this particular night there were a couple of musicians playing for the restaurant. Not particularly large but it is nice spot and unless you are willing to eat in the bar you better have a reservation.
It is listed as american and asian fusion, but there is a whole lot more going on. I started with an appetizer of the fried green tomatoes and they are by far the best I have had in the area. After that I had the shrimp street tacos with sweet potato chips and those were equally impressive. While the sweet potato chips were fantastic the tomatoes won the meal for me.
The staff are very friendly and while they can appear sparse they do a good job and are very helpful with recommendations. All in all a great spot and one I was fortunate to stumble upon.

This place is amazing. I have literally never had a bad meal and have tried EVERYTHING on the menu!
I love how family friendly it is and Brie and ossobuco pops are amazing appetizers.
