The CrossFit philosophy identifies 10 fundamental elements of fitness — cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy — and strives to develop these attributes in order to achieve an optimal fitness level. Thus, we incorporate elements of sprinting, weightlifting, and gymnastics into our training regimen.

Combine that with the competition and camaraderie of sports, and voila!, you have the essence of CrossFit training. To quote Greg Glassman, founder of CrossFit:

The magic is in the movement, the art is in the programming, the science is in the explanation, and the fun is in the community.

A CrossFit regimen is based on functional exercises performed at a high intensity with constantly varied formats. It is these specific elements that combine to produce superior cardio-respiratory fitness and core strength, and constitute the most effective rehabilitation from injury.

CrossFit is for everyone. Because of the functional exercises on which CrossFit is built, it is naturally scaleable for people of all ages and fitness levels, regardless of experience. We simply adjust the load and intensity of the movements to suit the individual.

History

Established in 2013.

CrossFit SOBRO (South Bronx) is The Original Bronx Box — the first to bring CrossFit to The Bronx community. We are proud to be making our own contribution to the revitalization of the South Bronx.

At CFSBx, we follow a traditional CrossFit model. That means we are not your typical gym. We don’t have machines. We don’t have TVs or mirrors in which to primp. We have barbells, kettle-bells, and medicine balls. We have a pull-up rig and jump ropes; and We don’t have TVs or mirrors in which to primp. We have barbells, kettle-bells, and medicine balls. We have a pull-up rig and jump ropes; and we run around the block, not on a treadmill.

And not only do we run, drop heavy weights, and perform gymnastics movements here, but we cheer. We support each other’s fitness goals and always root for the last person standing — no matter what. This camaraderie that develops when people face challenges together is a key component of what makes our program truly effective and special.
