Fordham University

Fordham is an amazing school. I fell in love with the campus when I visited it while looking at prospective graduate schools. I’d already gotten in when I visited, so it was kind of a done deal once I experienced the campus firsthand.
I can’t speak from an undergrad experience since I went to undergrad on the west coast, but I’ve found Fordham to be a generally friendly place, and all of my professors have been extremely kind and considerate of the students. They push you, most definitely, and I’ve heard this is not specific just to the realm of graduate programs.
Again, I’m sure the undergrad dynamic is totally different, but the graduate students here are overall friendly and unpretentious, which is maybe what I’ve loved more than anything else. I came from the Pacific Northwest and went to college with a large population of ostentatious hyper-​intellectuals with superiority complexes, which was definitely a detractor in classroom settings. At Fordham, everyone is pretty much on equal ground, and there is a lot of emphasis on group interpretation and dialogue to come to collective answers. The emphasis on collectivity and collaboration is strong, and there is a surprisingly democratic feel to the way my classes have gone.
As far as location, we’re in New York City, perhaps the greatest metropolis in the world, so the connection to world class institutions, companies, etc. is unmatched. The two campuses are different; Lincoln Center basically consists of a couple of city buildings on the upper west side, but there is a nice plaza there that’s open to the public. Rose Hill is the original campus, and is without a doubt the most gorgeous campus I’ve ever stepped foot on in my life. It’s Gothic, adorned with Catholic statues, sprawling lawns, trees, gardens, and every building basically looks like a castle. Comparisons to Hogwarts are definitely warranted. Did I mention the NY Botanical Garden and Bronx Zoo are in your backyard?
Yeah, yeah, Rose Hill (the main campus) is in the Bronx, but I really want to emphasize something here. I read on a college forum when I was initially researching the school that some woman had said her son was «so scared» of the area around Fordham that he wouldn’t even get out of the car to visit the school, which might be the most disgusting and absurd thing I’ve ever heard in my life.
I have walked around the area late at night and never felt even remotely perturbed by anyone or anything; if you’re an undergrad living on campus, it’s even less of an issue – the only thing you have to worry about is one of your upper class peers on campus becoming unhinged. The security at the campus is strong, and the entire place is walled in like Fort Knox.
I suppose if you’ve never left your mommy and daddy’s sprawling upstate mansion or your Connecticut boarding school, then yeah, the Bronx is going to be serious culture shock, but I’d like to dispel the notion that there is gang violence and murders and assaults happening on every corner here – there isn’t. I am from Portland, Ore. and I can honestly say that I’ve witnessed crazier/​more dangerous situations there on a regular basis than I have in the Bronx. In Portland, I’ve had loony drug addicts threatening to stab/​shoot me to death in front of a convenience store, and seen crazy people dump containers of Chinese food on innocent seniors while riding the train. In the Bronx? Not even.
If you have an ounce of street smarts and pay attention to your surroundings, you will be fine. The idea that the Fordham kids have something to worry about walking around the neighborhood is a myth perpetuated by clueless white plutocrats, and it’s absolute BS. At 3am? Maybe not the best time to be walking around drunk, but that goes for any big city in the WORLD.
If you can’t handle the Bronx, you can’t handle Fordham.

A beautiful campus rich with history. This was like a secret garden in the Bronx. This campus is located across the Bronx Zoo and Botanical gardens.

Finally got a chance to visit my old stomping grounds. My schedule for my visit to NY was tight but I had to go see my alma mater again and see how things have changed in the Rose Hill campus since my student years which I fondly remember. (I will leave the discussions of the academic atmosphere to the current crop of students and newly-​graduated alumni, as seen in the other reviews). The campus is still as scenic and well-​maintained as I remember, but with several impressive new buildings including a large parking garage, a magnificent new library and additional student residential buildings, all designed to be in harmony with the campus gothic theme of the architecture of the older buildings. Many improvements have also been made to the older buildings. The dining facility in McGinley Hall has been expanded, as have the sports and recreational facilities associated with the Lombardi Center. This campus is truly a beautiful academic and social oasis in the middle of the borough of the Bronx.

Fordham has a beautiful, safe, and secure campus with pretty buildings and solid infrastructure. I’m visiting as a guest student and have always enjoyed spending time at the university. It’s also located near a bunch of great restaurants!

When you walk onto campus you are instantly surrounded by beauty and friendly students! The great campus and people make up for the terrible food in the dining hall although there are other dining options on campus where you can use your meal plan.
Located in the Bronx, the Rose Hill campus offers students the opportunity to explore the city but also enjoy all of the perks of living on a real campus. To get to the city there is a train located right next to one of the gates which costs about 6 $ or you could walk up Fordham Rd to take the D or 4 train. The bars surrounding campus allow students in with a student ID and proof they are older than 18.
Although the Bronx is not the safest town, Fordham security is constantly driving around the area making sure students are safe. There are police on virtually every corner (for your safety, not trying to get you in trouble).

Beautiful campus, awesome facilities and filled with abundant student life — I’m a fan.
Downside? The Bronx is a shithole (as far as I can tell) and the tall fence surrounding the campus and security guards at every entrance is a downer.
Maybe I’m soft, but I was not impressed with the surrounding area and I’m not interested in sending my kid to a campus that feels like a inside-​out prison… lock the criminals out instead of in.
Nonetheless, it’s a great school and I don’t want to be an a-​hole or too judgmental…

The Rose Hill Campus is absolutely beautiful! I love this campus. Make sure you sign up for parking if your a student, in advance. The staff is friendly. The campus is so pretty and peaceful. The grass is so green in the summer :-)
Even in the winter this place is beautiful! Beware of the nats when it gets warmer, they are all over the place and visible! If you intend on going here, you’ll love it!
Plus, it is near the Bronx Zoo and the Botanical Gardens and the Fordham Shopping District, where everything is relatively cheap.

One of the best Universities in the country ranking #3 in the City of NY behind Columbia and NYU and in the top five in the nation (catholic university) behind Georgetown and Boston
excellent liberal arts program and political science program
that area of the bronx might not be one of the communities in the city but the campus is secure and what a beautiful campus it is with the Gothic Vatican look-​their staff and professors are top notch
and last but most important
they are taking care of our veterans who are coming back from the war and have decided to go back to school, so whether you are returning back to school to complete your undergraduate or graduate degree or maybe law school, Fordham University should be at the top of your list

I did grad school at the Lincoln Center campus as a commuter student. I must say that the Rosedale campus is beautiful. It sits on about 20 acres of lush green grass and has a mixture of old and modern construction. This section of the Bronx has gone through various incarnations.
Fordham Road is a very congested urban area. Plenty of pedestrians, and even more cars.
The university sits across the street from two New York landmarks, the Bronx Zoo, and the Bronx Botanical Gardens.

Forget the stores in the crowded streets selling jeans that make your ass look bigger.
Once you cross the gates and walk on to campus, you could be in any New England upscale university.
We finally got to the Bronx campus over the Thanksgiving break and were impressed by what you saw — the Lincoln Center campus was very conveniently located, but it was «The Concrete Campus»; might as well do University of Phoenix.

Best 6 years of my life! Great NYC neighborhood, Safe, fenced in campus. Close enough to be fun far away enough to discourage partying every night.

The good
Pretty small classes, you can get real help from teachers and nice letters of recommendation, lots of ways to get involved, better and better cafeteria food, pretty inside the gates, easy enough to get to the city, no grade inflation
The bad
Letters of rec only work when the person doing your evaluation letter doesn’t disappear to another country the entire summer and the school pretends your should wait to send the letters so you don’t do a disservice to yourself (this means you Donna Heald…) it’s ok I still got in I guess
Some crime outside campus (although I hear many campuses have almost as bad rap sheets

In the end go for the stories, street cred, pretty girl fashion deals, a well rounded education (although you may curse the english course at the time) and yummy little Italy!

Let’s not kid ourselves here: I like you as long as you like me.
When my professors/​deans are chill, well-​informed, and challenging, we’re best friends. The Rose Hill campus is hands-​down the most historic and gothic-​looking of all three (Lincoln Center and Westchester included.)
When financial aid isn’t coughing up enough dough, the interwebz is down, or I’m just feeling burnt-​out from life, we fight.
But still… I don’t know how to quit you.

I transferred here from the Bay Area in CA. I LOVE it. The classes are all pretty small (which may or may not be a good thing depending on how much sleep you’ve had), the campus is beautiful (though the really crappy New York weather sometimes makes one forget this… that tends to happen when I’m completely covered to keep the rain from soaking me), and some of the best faculty that I have met at any school that I ever visited or attended. I do have major complaints about the food (breakfast excepted). It’s one of the reasons I’m glad I got denied housing (another complaint. Transfers are not treated too well by financial aid or housing). Yes, it’s a Jesuit school, but the place is pretty open minded (there are, of course, bad apples in every bunch). Politically, the students tend to be middle, slightly to the right which is perfectly fine with me and my far left politics; it forces me to know what I am talking about when entering into political debate. The school is steps away from the «real» Little Italy, Bronx Zoo and the Botanical Gardens. Bar scene is HORRIBLE, though. The tri-​bar and Tinkers are kind of… ewww, but good for getting drunk (if that’s your only purpose). I’ve met some excellent people here, and look forward to my next two and a half years.

They have a habit of staffing their classes with graduate students who can barely speak English, and are never in their offices when you need to ask them something. I’m sorry, but when I’m paying $ 20,000+ per year for an education, I expect to be taught by a real professor! The people who run this place don’t seem to realize who their money is coming from and treat their students like they’re expendable.

Yay Fordham! I love this school. Best four years of my life (so far). Obvious perks: beautiful campus with grassy knolls and collegiate-​looking buildings in the middle of the Bronx, close enough to Manhattan, but far enough away so that campus life is vibrant. Less obvious perks: great faculty (as long as you do a little research on ratemyprofessor to avoid the bombs), small classes (very few huge lecture-​type classes here), and, most importantly, great people. There is very little pretension here: no NYU condescending hipster bullshit, but no Columbia holier-​and-​smarter-​than-​thou stuff either. Yes, there are exceptions, but everyone that I knew and hung out with was funny, cool, laid-​back, and fun. I really do believe that there is a spot for everyone at Fordham– if you want to do your own thing, that’s cool, and if you want to be a part of the campus, even better. LOVE IT. Wish I could go back.

I had a great four years in the Bronx. Beautiful campus, half an hour subway ride from the city with the best Italian food in the five boroughs right down the street.
I lived in the former project known as Walsh in a three bedroom apartment for two years — which was great for an undergrad — and had the best views of any apartment I will probably EVER inhabit.
Theres a fun college bar scene, great restaurants and a really awesome faculty right on the outskirts of New York City.

A great school if you’re looking to be near New York City, yet not in an urban setting.
The faculty is one of the best parts of the school… I had so many caring, attentive professors. Class sizes are relatively small and get even smaller when you get into your major.
Although it’s a religious school, they don’t force religion down your throat, and you’ll find a good mix of students from all different religious and ethnic backgrounds.
The neighborhood is relatively good, providing you use your common sense — like not walking alone after dark. You’ve got the Bronx Zoo, the New York Botanical Garden, Little Italy, and Fordham Road, so you have other worlds right at your fingertips.
It’s easy to get to New York City from Fordham; you can take the subway, Metro-​North, or Fordham’s inter-​campus transportation.
The dorms, except for O’Hare, leave much to be desired, as does the campus food. Great library and a good amount of activities for you to join.
All in all, it was a great four years for me there.
