Granby’s Funeral Service

If I know of someone who wants to use them, I will definitely put my 2 cents in! They made grieving my aunt an impossibility! They were not very comforting and they seemed to be more concerned with money than anything. While driving to the burial, the hearse left everyone after going through the toll (we went to New Jersey and got on the Turnpike)! Some people had EZ Passes and some didn’t. Luckily, the family had GPS!

First, let me make this clear, I did not even have the opportunity to work with these people. They shaded me before even getting a chance to do so!
Here is my story…
My mother passed away a week ago leaving no definitive requests for where she wanted cremation and memorial services held. My family and I were left with a limited amount of time to find a funeral home that would perform a cremation at a cost that was within our budget. I called around to several funeral homes in The Bronx including Granby’s who gave me the cost of $ 2400 for a cremation! I expressed that this price was high for what we had budgeted but that I was still interested in holding a memorial service with them later on down the road. The funeral director I spoke to said that this was no issue and to give her a call when we were ready.
Now, let me start here… In NYC the cost of a cremation (as of today) is only approx. $ 630. There is a general cost that is paid to one of the crematoriums within the 4 boroughs (not including staten island) of $ 419 and then some additional fees that amount to the $ 630. ANYTHING ELSE YOU PAY OVER THIS AMOUNT IS JUST FOR USING THE FUNERAL HOME’S NAME! (You can google this, btw. It is a fact!).
So anyway, Granby’s charges $ 2400 for direct cremation. Direct cremation meaning, there isn’t even a service held before being cremated. Blasphemy! I called around and found a great funeral home elsewhere that was willing to do the cremation for $ 900 less and advised that they were fine with us looking elsewhere for a place to do the memorial service later on down the road.
Now that the cremation is all said and done, I have been calling around looking for a funeral homes to do the memorial service. I really liked what I saw online for Granby’s and the funeral director I spoke to seemed very professional. so I circled back to them to make arrangements to come in and check out the place and start booking. The original director I spoke to was not in so I ended up speaking to a separate director who booked my family and I to come in and review potential arrangements.
I was excited that my search had ended and that I was finally on track to getting things ready and settled for the memorial service!
BUT THEN…
I get another phone call almost 5hrs later from the funeral director at Granby’s asking why I was not using the other funeral home that I cremated my mother in for memorial services. I expressed that while they were within our budget for a cremation, we were more interested in working with Granby’s due to their elegant facility.
BAD IDEA!
The director then proceeds to tell me some B.S. story about a family years ago that used another funeral home for a cremation and then used them for a memorial service. Apparently «Things got broken» as he put it and, therefore, we cannot work with them.
I’M SORRY… HUH???
So you’re telling me that after speaking to TWO directors who up until this point had no issue working with me after I made it VERY CLEAR that I was working with someone else on the cremation… and also expressed no issue with that until this very moment… Now I can’t hold a service here???
WAIT…IT GETS BETTER!
So, then Ms. Granby herself gets on the phone to reconfirm (with zero sympathy, by the way) that we can’t work with them since we didn’t do our cremation there first. Citing (and this is a direct quote!) that they «Just don’t open their funeral home to the public like that». When I expressed that the previous director I spoke to told me this wasn’t an issue, Ms. Granby plainly put out there this is other director was (and again I quote) «Confused».
*side eye*
LIES! FAIRYTALES! AND FALLACIES, MA’AM!
Tell the truth! You are upset because you weren’t able to get an extra $ 2400 out of us for a cremation and are now shunning my family the ability to hold a memorial service! We are not just the ‘public’ we are paying customers just like everyone who is not only dealing with the hurt of a lost family member but also the stress of having to even make these types of arrangements.
I am disappointed and disgusted on how this situation was handled. If any of this was an issue it should have been made clear from day 1 and I would have never wasted any time in dealing with this business.
I am now going back to square one with my search and hope to find somewhere to work with soon.
I am not telling anyone to never work with these people, I am just simply putting this out there so that you can be warned about what you are getting yourself into!
As for Granby’s I hope you know that this entire situation is something that you should be embarrassed about. There are plenty of funeral services to choose from in that area and you should be honored that a family even put you at the top of their list for consideration. Everyone runs their business differently but this was completely in bad taste.

Looking for some old-​school, screwed-​up mistreatment on a grand scale while at the same time mourning the loss of your loved one (in this case my father)? Well in the Bronx look no further than Granby’s Funeral Services on White Plains road.

My father passed away in July of 2009 in the Bronx of New York City. Being his only son and only kin living here in California the NYPD and the funeral home needed certain permissions from me in order to ID his body (so they all said) in order to move on and plan his funeral. It seems that certain members of my father’s family (yeah, relatives of mine) in collusion with Granby’s Funeral Home had a slick plan to cut me out of the loop of information regarding my father’s death. Granby’s Funeral Home had no problem playing along.

It has now been four weeks since my father passed away and Granby’s Funeral Home is still denying me (yes, my father’s only son) access to records relating to his death! UN-​BE-​LIEV-​ABLE!

So YES, I do have an NYC attorney and YES we will file the necessary petition (s) to force compliance and YES Granby’s Funeral Home and their DISDAINFUL TACTICS will be named and included with any further legal matters I will have to pursue in the Bronx relating to my father’s death.

If you want good-​ol-​boy, behind-​the-​scenes, secretive and disrespectful treatment when attempting to mourn and grieve the loss of a loved one, then go ahead and let Granby’s steal your money and take over those affairs. They’ll even come and pick you up in a limousine to drive you one block (for a fee of course).
