Modern Market

Pretty good grocery store in the Bronx. There are not many options, but this place seems to have decent groceries at decent prices. A good place to pick up a few items here and there that you’re missing.

Eh, I just don’t see a place for this market with all the other better specialty shops nearby.

I am a grad student at Fordham and live nearby. While C-​Town is closer to my apartment, I tend to do most of my shopping at Modern Market instead.
I prefer Modern Market for two reasons: one being that it is easier to navigate– there are only about four or five aisles altogether, but they run very far back into the store, and there is more room to move around. I find getting around C-​Town to be a hassle, especially when it’s busy; it’s crammed and you’re constantly in people’s way, or they’re in yours. Second, in my experience, the employees at Modern are way friendlier. Not exorbitantly, but the staff here is way more pleasant, and the checkout lines move way faster. I haven’t waited more than a minute in line here.
Modern has a pretty good selection of dairy, as well as fruit and vegetables. The only thing off the top of my head that C-​Town has more of is bakery stuff, like cakes and whatnot, but that’s a non-​issue for me. The store is always clean and well-​stocked.
In terms of price, I do find C-​Town to generally be cheaper on some things, but not always. The stores compete, so it’s a give-​and-​take situation. Modern Market may be marginally more expensive, but I’ve gotten some great deals on their sales here (2 containers of coffee cream for $ 5, a gallon of almond milk for $ 3). It just depends on the sales that week. If you want to score the best price on all your groceries, you’ll have to make a trip to here and to C-​Town, but I’d personally rather pay a couple of extra dollars than have to walk down to C-​Town and deal with the crowds and lines.
The bottom line is that we’re in New York City, so groceries are a bit more (although not nearly as much as Manhattan’s, thank God), but the prices here are fair enough. I’m from the west coast and honestly, I don’t pay much (if anything) more for groceries here in the Bronx than I had to back in Portland.

I loved this place before in changed to the Crown owners. The vegetables where the freshest in town and I was always greaterd with sincerity.
The produce was top notch Naruto water down and old rotten overpriced and not managed well I overheard the new owner and all the representatives from crash there talking about that that was supposed to be the higher end of Seatown but I think I got the wrong end of the stick window and measuring for what is top notch the pencil what’s I could barrel is all the shows of stock pretty tight but with mostly Christ Dale merchandise which I don’t think a high and still with ever have visible to the customers when going to C town I never like to produce there I go down to the store and I get disgusted and I come up empty handed I have to go a long distance now to get my produce remove you from the inside there’s no management accessible or visible to anyone to ask questions too the front of person that looks like she’s running the place is always on her cell phone the people at the register just look like zombies its not a very nice inviting place when the first thing you see is rotten produce an overpriced items the end caps look like a old styles supermarket with a feature just junk I want to get rid of the aspect of having things fresh this way out of bounds there looks like they’re using this supermarket to put all the extra garbage from C town to there this place needs a great manager that knows how to motivate the people and to make things happen it’s too bad Arthur Avenue is now Staind with this bad landmark that used to be good I wish them all the luck in the World

Every single time I have been here (which is once or twice a week for the past 8 months, I have encountered extremely rude, unfriendly, lazy cashiers with extreme attitudes. I would love if they were all fired (or at least PROPERLY trained) and competent, friendly cashiers were hired.

Good place to get your produce. Not the best grocery store, but it has the basics. Bread, milk, eggs… I’ve never had a bad experience, but never had an amazing experience either. Literally just the basics. Decent prices. Quick service.

As supermarkets go, Modern doesn’t have the best or most extensive selection, but it’s really not half bad. In the last year and a half or so, they’ve really spruced the place up, and it’s much better for it. You still are going to have a hard time finding any special ethnic foods that aren’t Spanish or Italian, and I’ve had difficulty finding baking stuff there. However, it’s clean and shiny and they have decent sales and very friendly cashiers. I’ve never had anything but prompt and cheerful service there. The produce always is fresh, and there’s usually a fairly good variety of meats, though they don’t really carry fish. There isn’t a deli counter, but they have a cheese section, which has a limited but always interesting variety, and they stock bread from the local bakeries. Dry goods like cereal can be a little expensive, but all in all prices are reasonable. Modern isn’t going to blow anyone’s socks off, but it serves the neighborhood well and is way nicer than C-​Town, which has a very sketchy return policy, (thanks for selling me rancid chicken!), and a rather curt staff who in large part don’t speak English. This is definitely the best all around supermarket option in the neighborhood, and there are plenty of butchers, fishmongers, and Italian specialty shops nearby to supplement most shortcomings.

Still just a 3-​star. Modern has spruced itself up a bit, but the store still lacks a lot of desirable items. Considering the college clientele, it isn’t surprising. And I still shop here rather than cross Fordham Rd for the wealth of frozen crap food at Compare. Plus, I sometimes prefer the produce at Modern to Compare’s.

It is true that Modern is the only supermarket that is convenient for Fordham Students. They milk this for all it is worth. It is kind of futile to write a review for them became anyone that has any interest in reading it will probably have to go back there at some point anyway but the bottom line is: their prices are really high, their stock is low, and they are generally pretty dirty. Two good things I will say about them is their bread is pretty good (even though there are a ton of bakeries around it with better bread) and also the Macintosh apples are suspiciously good. Suspiciously only because they come from Modern. Even the apples I lugged from Whole Foods were not nearly as good. I like apples.

Modern is the only supermarket that is convenient to go to if you go to Fordham or live near it. It’s not great, but it’s all we’ve got. The prices are not particularly impressive, but sometimes they have good deals. The produce is decent. There is a surprisingly good selection of cheese. The selection in general is mediocre, but sufficient; you won’t find anything too obscure here, but they usually have the basics.
Sometimes Modern drops the ball, but it’s usually in kind of an amusing way. One time I was trying to make a pumpkin pie, and despite having all sorts of bizarre Caribbean spices, there was no cinnamon in the entire store. Another time, I was looking for vanilla, and couldn’t find it anywhere. It turned out it was nestled amidst the cleaning products, somewhere between Mr. Clean and Formula 409. The selection of cold cuts is particularly bad.
Overall, Modern is a slightly below average supermarket. My advice is to get as much as you can at the local shops on and around Arthur Ave and then head to Modern to get the rest. It’s not great, but it’ll do.

I love modern! The fresh produce is great and a lot better than the indoor Italian market down the block. The meats are great and there are always great bargains to be had.

I went back today because I really needed some bread. I know its crazy to be buying bread from here when Arthur Ave. is full of bakeries, but I really needed sandwich bread and not those amazingly crusty and soft works of art that fill the street.
Upon entering I noticed 2 signs taped to the doors from the NYS Department of Health stating that Modern had passed its inspection. Being a little wary considering my past experiences I decided to take a little tour of the aisles to see if anything had changed. To my amazement I didn’t find a single expired canned good, but I did find a few things that were getting a little close.
So plus 1 star for no expired stuff.

When I lived half a block away from here, I made a habit of coming to Modern strictly out of convenience but was always a bit put off by the highish prices and small selection. So when someone told me C-​Town was only a few blocks away, I checked it out. Despite the cheaper prices, I was easily overwhelmed by the massive size of C-​Town in comparison to the pint-​sized power of Modern and ran out of there within minutes suffering from something I can only compare to brief intense agoraphobia.
Back to Modern for the rest of my Fordham stay.
Also, Modern’s produce is a lot nicer than that of C-​Town. BUT be careful: fresh cheese there is crazy expensive!

A nice little grocery store, albiet a little more expensive than C Town. Their fresh produce is, well, fresh! They have a good meat selection also. I dig the sawdust on the floor — it just screams «mom and pop store»
