The Pear Tree

My experiences at The Pear Tree have been thus far very positive. I bought some charms a couple years ago that needed chains, and they sold me the supplies and taught me how to do one of them so I could take the rest home and do them all by my onesies. It was challenging, but a fun project, and they came out super nice! I hadn’t been back in years, but I just inherited a pendant from my grandmother and wanted to get a chain for it — this time since it was just the one necklace, the woman behind the counter put the whole thing together for me. For less than $ 10 I got a chain with a clasp and with variable link sizes so I can adjust the length, and she worked on it a couple times while we tried to figure out the ideal length. The woman behind the counter was patient and kind and funny. All of my experiences at The Pear Tree have been pleasant, and I wouldn’t hesitate to go back for any future jewelry-​making endeavors!

Fantastic jewelry repair. I brought in many pieces and most were done on the spot. Friendly, thoughtful service. Pricing was very reasonable. Would go back!

This place is cute and warm for those who make jewelry as a hobby. I’ve found the staff to be generally very welcoming and helpful and the selection of beads, chain, and findings to be moderate to good. However, as I’ve gotten into professional jewelry-​making I find that this store seldom has what I need as far as supplies are concerned. When they do, they are ridiculously overpriced. I realize this is retail and they need to make a profit, but for those looking to purchase supplies in bulk, I suggest you look elsewhere.

Favorite place to visit in Brookline. The people are great and always willing to help out a learning beader! Selection is pretty decent for a shop of its size but always a good time anyways. The staff always adapt to help with repairs, quick lessons, opinions, and sending little pieces all the way to Virginia for a highly loyal customer! Go support this great local business!

I adore this shop. It is a cute little haven where I can spend sometime shopping to create an original masterpiece of jewelry. I enjoy the selection and high quality of the beads and the helpfulness of the classes that are offered. Some one gave a bad review because they thought it was overpriced here. I disagree. It is a good value.
When you include e expert instruction you get for the price it adds even more value to the package. I like creating an original gift for a friend and picking all the beads based on their favorite colors I observe them wearing and then make a piece just for them. My friends fancy the idea I spent time and thought on their gift and it becomes a cherished item of theirs.
It makes people happy and that ie what I love… speeding around the joy.

I can’t believe I waited this long to go here! It was so wonderful and I spent too much money but that’s beside the point. Wonderful and extensive stone collection and an amazing and helpful staff. They offer cool classes and even offered me a one on one class for only $ 10 more. Love it

I am a jewelry maker and have made some beautiful things at this location. Since my tools are out of state. I can use theirs for free. This time I went in there for a semi– large project. The staff was super helpful and creative. They have a nice selection of real stones and supplies. A gem in the bustling town of Brookline.

Have been back lots since my original post. I have bought a nice, unique bracelet there. Also, hey have advised on repair as well as repaired jewelry for me. Super reasonable. Helpful, knowledgeable. Really have helped me many times. Great findings and beads for jewelry making at home. I have been 100% pleased & wish to say thanks!

During a very long drive with kids from Chicago to Boston my 8 year olds very special friendship bracelet was broken. We found the store on Unilocal and brought it here for repairs. Both women were very kind and helped my son repair it. $ 0.37 later it is better than new with a stronger cord. Thank you!

The Pear Tree saved my wedding! Okay, that might be a bit dramatic, but hear me out. I had ordered a nice necklace from Etsy for my Maid of Honor… to my dismay, it arrived waaaayyyy too short — a week before the wedding. In my panicked attempts to find a convenient, reasonable place to help me fix it, I stumbled upon The Pear Tree on Unilocal.Not only would she lengthen it, she would do it right that minute while I waited! What?! She was super friendly and helped me pick out the perfect length extension so the necklace would fall just right… and had finished it up before I even had to feed the meter. Thank you for saving my sanity!

A pinch pricey but the staff and selection is so swell, I can’t hold that against The Pear Tree too much.
I tried out a chainmaille class here. I’m the worst at it but the woman teaching the class was so nice and patient with my clumsy ring work.
One of the things I like about this store is that it has so many pretty beads, strings, clasps, pendants and other jewelry making materials.
And! A few times a week there are classes for a variety of jewelry making skills including silk knotting, chainmaille, a variety of earring classes and more.
If you’re in Brookline/​Brighton/​Allston and feeling crafty, give this place a whirl.

I went in to get the clasps on two necklaces repaired. The owner fixed them both in about five minutes, and she was super friendly to boot. Plus, she charged me practically nothing. The next time I need jewelry repaired, I will be back to The Pear Tree.

I am not really that into beading but I stopped in here with a friend who was shopping for beads. She really enjoyed the selection in this store, especially the large assortment of semi-​precious strands. They also have a selection of jewelry (no assembly required) that I enjoyed browsing. There were several pieces from West Africa as well as an interesting selection of pendants featuring old postage stamps. Staff were friendly and helpful.

I started making my own jewelry this winter and since I live near Coolidge Corner, I figured that the Pear Tree would be the best place to buy my supplies. However, I have three issues with this place.
1. They do not a good selection of gold-​plated findings. Thus, if you want to make a gold hued piece, you have to shell out for the gold-​filled findings. I would actually spend more money there if they gave me the option of buying things that are more in my price range.
2. Their service leaves much to be desired. Although the staff is never outright rude, I feel unwelcome, or maybe just ignored, most of the time. On two separate occasions, some of my beads failed to make it into my bag, and although I was not charged for them, they salesperson wasn’t very good at making sure I was all taken care of.
3. A third point: although they have a membership card program, they often forget to ask you if you are a member. I work at a store, and people forget where they are members all the time, so I ask them and help them if they cannot remember. Thus, the benefits you would get by accumulating purchases are lost.
No, the Pear Tree isn’t awful, and I have gone there in a pinch. However, I do not enjoy it.

I went in purely by happenstance because I was meeting friends for dinner and I am glad I did. It looks like a bead store only if you walk by quickly but they actually sell jewelry as well — one of a kind items made by the owner and others as well as sterling earrings, etc.
They have lots of unique beads and beading supplies and you can buy stringed beads that are necklace length and bracelet length that only require a clasp. The prices for these items are amazing given the unique beautiful variety of beads to choose from. Looks like they also hold beading workshops and sell other special items like glass buttons.
It was a special night in Brookline where everything was 20% off so I bought a lot of pieces for a great price. The staff are friendly and very helpful and I will definitely return when I save up as there were many items I loved.

So it’s small, a bit cramped, and a bit camp. I’m all for it.
These folks have a great offering of several important things: chain, metal findings, precious metal pieces and semi-​precious stones. They always have a table of one-​of-​a-​kind pieces as well, things that make people go, «Where did you get that and where can I find one?»
Love the staff here as well — they are happy to help, knowledgeable of the inventory and invested in this great, small, local business.
The prices are better, I think, than Beadworks, definitely better than Abeille. Their unique pieces are more pricey, of course. I’m willing to pay for beautiful, rare things, however.

I’ll start this out by saying that I’m not a jewelry-​maker. I wish I were. But I’m not.
I have several friends that are very into jewelry making and some who own online stores (
), so I decided I should stop in here to see if it might have anything of interest for them. Bad idea. Only because everything in there was cool. They have standard jewelry-​making hardware and beads, but they’ve also got some great standout pieces that would make a big statement on a simple chain/​beaded strand.
I was also thrilled to discover that they have some pre-​made/​designed jewelry for sale and have bought myself several things there. I plan to raid this place around the holidays and snatch up some great, unique pieces for friends and family. That I might keep for myself. I LOVE nearly every piece in there and they’re very affordable. The other great thing is that they’re sturdy, quality pieces of jewelry, made from sterling silver, mostly, and are not like some of the cheapo costume jewelry offerings that you find around town.
Two thumbs way up, Pear Tree, keep up the good work. They also get props for doing some pretty fantastic social networking for such a small store.

I finally went to this place after wanting to try it out of necessity. I had a beloved rose stone chips necklace that desperately needed to be lengthened. While they didn’t have the right color stone chips, the woman helped me by suggesting I just add a longer chain to clasp onto. Now why didn’t I think of that?! I even got to fix it myself right then and there.
In fact, there was a lot of people working on stuff. There’s a big table in the middle where people settle down to work after they’ve purchased their beads and make their DIY jewelry. It had such a friendly atmosphere, I could definitely see settling down here on a rainy day to make my own creation. Everyone was so nice and helpful and the place is darling.

Coolidge Corner wouldn’t be Coolidge Corner if it didn’t have The Pear Tree (though it has moved around a bunch of times).
They have a *great* selection of beads — if you’re looking for semi-​precious stone beads they have a wide variety. There are a lot of different types of beads, too which is awesome. Everything is organized very well.
They have a lot of beads on strands, some of which are fairly reasonably priced. Some of their other beads are a little bit more expensive than I’d normally want.
The staff is friendly, and they will let you string the jewelry yourself while you’re there or finish off jewelry for you if you’d like (for a few dollars extra), which is kinda cool.
This is the kind of place you could spend hours! Definitely check this place out and poke around — you are sure to find some interesting beads!

Coolidge needs more businesses like this! Such a great little neighborhood bead store. You won’t find every bead under the sun here in their bite sized store, but you’ll find plenty to grab some beads and important other little necessities to make a pair of fabulous earrings on a Tuesday night.
Their hours are pretty reasonable, staying open as late as 8 p.m. on some nights and their staff has always been super friendly. In particular, I appreciate that they don’t prepackage their wires and earring hooks etc so that I can buy exactly the number I need for my project and walk out spending less than $ 5 depending on how many/​types of beads I buy.
I haven’t been to one of their classes, but I’d definitely consider it. I’d still go to Beadworks when I want to be overwhelmed by pretty beads but this is a great place for the locals to try out.
