9th Street Cycles

I had a great experience shopping at 9^th Street Cycles! I was in the market for a pair of cycling shoes. I am not a serious cycler; I take spinning classes at an indoor studio and felt sort of intimidated by the prospect of going into a cycling shop. I called around to a few places and was discouraged by how impatient and full of themselves a lot of the people I spoke to were. The shopkeepers at 9^th Street Cycles were extremely friendly and helpful on the phone, so I stopped in with my mom on a Saturday afternoon. They really took their time with me and helped me make an informed decision. They found several pairs of shoes for me to try on and made several trips downstairs to the storage room to find more. The pair I bought were very different than what I was initially looking for, but I’ve been wearing them for months now and have been extremely happy with them. And they were on sale! The guys also installed the cleats for me, which was really helpful.

Super nice guys here. Hooked me up with a new Tribe, runs great, good service, and free tune ups if you buy through them. Mechanic Travis was rad.

This place is the BEST! I’m a relatively new year-​round cyclist, and this is the only shop I take my bikes to. These guys have seen me through car wreck after car wreck, flat tire after flat tire, and on the occasional stops to use their free air.
I can’t speak much for the prices of most of the goods in the store, but the service charges are the most reasonable I’ve found around here (I think minimum labor is $ 6? Head over to any other bike shop in this or an adjacent neighborhood, and you might expect to see a $ 30 minimum labor charge).
The folks are nice, always seem to remember me, and answer all my annoying detailed questions, happy to take the time to impart all their bike smarts. They’ve consistently done a great job fixing up my bikes… along with my sad, sad ego following each of my bike, er, mishaps.
I totally flutter my eyelashes at this shop.

These guys aren’t perfect. But service is fast, fairly priced, and convenient. They are my top pick in the neighborhood.

These guys are great! I came by with a minor brake issue, they fixed it right away. I was looking to buy a bigger lock and one of the guys there showed me how to use my smaller lock around a different part of the frame, so that I didn’t have to buy a new one. Super friendly and helpful – would definitely recommend!

Went in there the other day, guy with scruffy beard helped me, super nice and super helpful … Other bike stores in area except for habitat are snobby and downright rude
Frankly this and habitat have my business, the other ones are catering to the big money bucks park slope carbon, graphite $$$$ Italian bikes crowd. The hypocrisy of park slope knows no bounds. The upper one percent are here masquerading as the proletariat. Believe me they are not

These guys agreed to tune up my little daughter’s tricycle! It’s not even a real vehicle, the wheels are plastic not rubber, but it had been squeaking SO HORRIBLY ever since we got it, and they gave it a full tune-​up, fixed the squeak and made it run super smoothly. They treated her with respect as though she was a legit customer, which is adorable.

While the front desk folks are a bit clueless, Nick the mechanic is great. Had a real challenging issue with an oldish Cannondale with a SRAM dual mode shifter and he did a creative workaround that basically improved the ride 100% and was super reasonable $.
If the sales folk were better, I’d say 4 stars.

I took my old-​school 10 speed road bike for much needed tuneup and handlebar conversion. Great service, maybe a bit pricey for tuneup ($ 95), but that included all installation of the parts — got new tires, brake pads, bar grips and brake levers. They put my old lamp on the new bars and threw in a bell for free. Got a basket at checkout and they offered to install also as part of tuneup. Nick was spot on with estimate and they did same day service. It’s like a new bike!

We went to 9^th Street to rent a bike for a friend visiting from out of town. Just a one day rental. I also wanted to check out the store sine my husband is in the market for his first bike in years. Either way, we won’t be doing any business with them. We drove the bike home to our neighborhood, grabbed a bite and then went for a ride to Coney Island. The bike we rented got a flat about 30 minutes into riding it. Not a big deal, bikes get flats. Except that this bike, as we soon learned, had a different set of tires that require an adapter to fill with air. This was never explained to us nor were we given said adapter. At this point, we were miles from home at 630 at night and by the time we got home were too exhausted and hot to take the bike back to the store.
The next day we returned the bike and I told them what happened and inquired about the tire. This is when we learned about the adapter — information that would have been much more useful when renting the bike. Either way, when I asked for a discount on a future rental or a discount on this rental given what had happened, I got… nothing. There was no apology. There was absolutely zero customer service. Not even a 10 percent off coupon for an accessory moving forward. More than that, I was told that they *could* have helped me had I brought it back when we got the flat, which was not at all convenient. The woman who was helping me kept having to go to the manager to ask what to do. He was but four feet away fixing a bike so I could hear everything that he was saying but never once did he acknowledge me or come forward to talk to me.
I recognize that this is just a rental, but they lost a potential customer and I will go out of my way to be sure that others don’t do business here moving forward. When you’re in the business of working with people, you have to have SOME sense of how to interact and care for a customer.

Recently acquired a second hand racing bike with oversized stem which was causing discomfort. Was helped by a very knowledgeable mechanic/​sales guy and my problem was solved in a fairly quick manner. Good price for the work as well.
Side note: they have an excellent selection of Bianchis.

These jokers tried to charge me $ 10 to take their garbage. I asked them for a bike box, which all shops just throw out at the end of the night anyway. The worker made no mention of charging when I called on the phone so when I walked over there they decided to drop that on me. This shop is a joke. Last time I asked how much to remove a headset cup, a 2 second procedure I’d gladly pay $ 5-​$ 15 for them to do and they quoted me $ 35!
Just walk 2 blocks up to Bicycle Habitat. Friendly guys and we had a good laugh about 9^th street cycles charging me to take out their garbage.

These guys are awesome. I bought my road bike here and they treat me like royalty. Not once do I feel intimidated being far from an expert. Always make me feel welcome.
Another perk: Free tune-​ups for life since I purchased my ride from them.

I’ve been a patron of 9^th Street Cycles pretty much since they opened. Each time I enter the store I am warmly greeted and asked what can be done for me.
For a long time I owned a Schwinn Cruiser – not exactly an ideal bike for the city. Each time I needed service for this bik, e it was done professionally and with a smile.
A friend of mine had the same experience when she purchased a Bianchi Cortina Dama. She raved about the service and the lifetime tune-​ups for bikes purchased there, which are honored at both the 9^th Street location and the Excelsior location. When I was just about ready to make my purchase I did some comparison shopping and I couldn’t find another shop that offered the same life-​time offer. That, combined with the knowledgeable and friendly staff were the deciding factors for me.
I told Giovanni the salesperson what exactly what I was looking for and he patiently answered all questions that I had and was not pushy nor did he try to sell me the most expensive bike. And naturally, I was also able to take the Pink Bianchi Torino Dama out for a test ride before my making my choice.

As a resident of Williamsburg, I was worried this shop would be just like so many of those in my neighborhood — pretentious and unhelpful. But I was completely wrong!
My handlebars had loosened and needed help being put back in its proper spot. Not only did Gio fix my handlebars at no cost, but he took a closer look at the bike on his own and realized the handlebars were off-​center by about a half an inch. I happily biked home and my bike is still as good as new. Thanks, Gio!

Last night was my second visit to 9^th Street Cycles. I came in pretty close to closing time, but they were still very accommodating and able to fix my flat in no time. I’ll certainly be back.

i really can’t write a bad enough review. i went here because it’s the closest shop to my house. should’ve looked at Unilocal.a new experience for me to get work done on my bike that is so bad it makes my bike worse while getting cussed at by a counter guy.
my tune-​up set one brake too loose & caused my chain too repeatedly drop, where eventually it fell into the crankshaft & broke. i returned to get a chain & ask them to set brake. they refused to reset break for free despite the fact that i’d only ridden it once since my tune-​up. they replaced the chain and eventually i convinced them to wave off the $ 15 brake adjustment fee. for my efforts in doing so, the counter-​guy told me he «shouldn’t have to deal with this fucking shit.»
the chain continued to drop & now the gears weren’t shifting properly either. i took it to another shop, that very easily managed to notice that they hadn’t put all the bolts back on the chainring, causing the chain to drop. my gears weren’t shifting properly because the chain didn’t fit my worn freewheel, which needed to be replaced.
i wrote the owner asking for a refund on labor only. he was very accommodating until i explained my situation. then i never heard back from him.

Another great experience. I originally went to Bicycle Habitat to get a new wireless bike computer installed and they told me it was broken and suggested I buy one of their computers. Skeptical, I brought the same computer to 9^th street cycles. The guys there were super friendly and attentive and got it up and working in 25 minutes. I don’t understand the negative reviews, they’re well worth the try!

My daughter needed a good lock for her classic Schwinn bike, and she needed a good helmet too, so she wanted to go to this place and I am glad she suggested it. The fellow that helped us was knlwldegable and freindly and he gave us good advice, He made sure that she had the right sized helmet and that the adjustments were made to fit. He showed us a few locks and explained the difterences between models.
These are nice folks and they seem to carry a nice inventory and a range of products from which to select what you want and need.
