Acme Pet Food

This place has everything i needed for my beloved Flip (COCK-​A-​POO). Will continue to come here for my dog’s science diet food. The guys there were hilarious too! :)

Awesome prices on the goods. Got my puppy a bed and toys! The cashier was very friendly and knowledgable.

Big fan of this place. They’re very helpful. They know their product remarkable well, and are always willing to chat about your pet and make recommendations. Plus delivery of the huge bags of kitty litter and food is extremely convenient. Highly recommend!

Acme is a gem of a local business on Vanderbilt Avenue. The staff is great and always helpful.

I absolutely love Acme. The staff is SO nice and if they don’t have what I need they’ll order it and give me a ring when it arrives. They are really a great small business. Wouldn’t go anywhere else!

Not the cheapest, but incredibly convenient & well stocked. They carry Wellness small breed healthy weight (my go-​to dog food), musher’s secret, supplies for dog anxiety (my pup is new to NYC), and poop bags, which pretty much covers all of my dog buying needs.
Only wish they’d stock the kind of bags I (feel silly but) like to buy: green recycled bags that are lavender scented in the rolls (yes, I feel ridiculous typing that and even more so buying them but it’s nice when you can’t find a trash to not have to smell poo for blocks and blocks).
Also: the owner seems really really nice.

Great neighborhood pet supply store. They are always well stocked and have a good selection of food for both dogs & cats. It is a bit cramped but they’re trying to fit a lot of items into small store space (typical in NYC). Also, they deliver, which is a huge help when buying the 15lb & 30lb dry food bags.

I’ve been going there for 30 years (or it feels like that) and for all my pets, Tommy and Brian have been my go– to guys.
They are so well stocked and helpful.
Plus they deliver!
I just wish to heck they would get a computer and store my info (which they have to ask me to give each and every time).
HA! I was writing this as I was putting in my order and Brian said, «So you are are 321 Adelphi, right?» So after 30 years he finally has my add memorized!

It is impossible for me to believe the negative reviews for Acme Pet Food. I have been a regular customer for a number of years and have never experienced — let alone seen — anything other than friendly and attentive service. Who yearns for a slick, pet store with wide aisles? If that’s so attractive, then move to the suburbs. I want to shop at a place that is committed to being a part of the neighborhood fabric — and Acme fits the bill all the way.

Acme Pet has been my go-​to pet store since I moved into Prospect Heights in 1996. That was way before the gentrification began and Vanderbilt Ave was lined with Ma & Pop stores where the owners ran the cash register and knew their customers by name. Acme remains one of those kinds of businesses, a hold-​over from the days when you knew your neighbors and patronized the small stores because they WERE your neighbors.
The store is tiny, but packed literally from floor to ceiling with everything you would need for your 4-​legged friends. I don’t have fish, birds, a bunny, or anything reptilian so I can’t speak to what they carry for those varieties of pets, but for dogs and cats, they offer gourmet foods, toys, supplies and all the stuff you could want or need.
Some of the other reviews mention the staff in negative ways. I’ve always had great service from the owners and the young people who work there. Upon walking into the store one of the young salesmen will immediately greet you and offer you help. (Very different from my experiences at places like Petco where the vast hallways may be spacious but you can’t find a living soul to answer a question or offer advice.)
Now that the gentrification of Prospect Heights is nearing completion my last thought for this review is for any new Brooklynite who has moved to this area and who does not remember the ‘hood when cars double parked here with speakers blasting R& B and salsa day and night, or when Vanderbilt Ave featured dive diners and hair braiders and bodegas with dusty cats, when there were no wine bars or sports bars, or even any bars. I understand that you have moved here and have brought with you many good things, but please, if you want meticulously clean, spacious stores with ample lighting and sales clerks with Masters degrees, feel free to shop somewhere else. Try to embrace what makes Brooklyn so cool: neighbors. I love Acme not only because the owners and staff are friendly, because the store always has what I need, because the resident cats are chill, because they hire young kids to help out and teach them to be hard working and responsible, but because they are part of the Brooklyn neighborhood that understands that being a good neighbor is good business.

Rude. Cramped space. Not interested in doing business. Rude. Unfriendly. Rude. Overpriced. Obnoxious. Rude. Dirty. Did I say Rude? Don’t bother patronizing this pet store. There are better ones in the neighborhood.

I had such a strange experience at this place. I ran out of dog food in the middle of a move and ran in with my toddler in a stroller on the way home while running errands to get some cans of food to hold our dog over until I could sort out food delivery. I explained that my dog wasn’t eating the current food and took the opportunity to ask advice on a possible brand change. The first woman I encountered was extremely friendly and helpful. She explained that she might just be getting too much per feeding and to try that before I switch brands. So I proceeded to grab a couple of cans of food and walked to the counter.
The man behind the counter asked me why I was buying that particular food, I explained that my dog has some allergies. He seemed to disapprove. He asked why I don’t just buy a bag of food rather than cans. I explained that I wasn’t near home, had to grab some groceries and with my child in a stroller it would be too much to carry a bag of food and groceries and a stroller and my child up two flights of stairs. That I had planned to order delivery first thing the following morning. He suggested I buy a small bag, but I understand that the value is less when you buy smaller. It’s about $ 3.4/lb for a small bag of food as opposed to $ 2.5/lb for the bag I normally buy. He said «aaaalright» as if I was making a huge mistake, said that maybe three times. So, I just stopped trying to be chatty/​friendly and just paid for my cans of food. As I was packing my wallet and things away and before I walked out of the store, the woman who initially was friendly and helpful laughed. And the man behind the counter said, «I’m not going to say anything. I’m not saying anything.» I was so tempted to ask him if he was talking about me (who else was he talking about), but decided to just not order my delivery from him and rather order it from the internet. If you want to give friendly advice that’s one thing, it’s another to give this weird passive aggressive push to your customers and then get annoyed and rude when we make our own decisions. It can’t be making you happy to be like that every day. You need to relax.
Anyway, won’t be shopping there ever again. Good luck.

SO cramped, awkward, and uncomfortable.
I’ve been in a few times and shrugged off bitchy comments about using my debit card and the annoying weaving you have to do through tiny aisles but my most recent visit will definitely be my last. I’m ordering online.
I went in to buy a front clipping harness for my new pup learning to walk on a leash and got a condescending lecture front he owner about how harnesses don’t train dogs to walk and I needed to buy a choke or prong collar. Absolutely not. Would never want to choke my dog and I wish I’d walked out then. I spent $ 70 (you’re welcome) on a front clipping harness and was upsold dog treats the whole time I was waiting to pay. The kid was nice but just didn’t know what he was saying. My dog can’t have chicken and even after reiterating that and saying no to a few items, he kept offering me different chicken-​based treats until I got to the register to pay. I’m sure thats a commission thing so no real problem but annoying.
The store needs a remodeling and probably some customer service revamping. Either way, I’m out. And that harness worked like a dream by the way, nasty.

So, I used to use Acme before I moved to the west coast, and very happy that they are still here now that I have returned to Brooklyn. I was forced to use the big name chain shops out there because they were all over the place, and really had no other options. I got a new dog, tried to use the same brand of food that my old dog used, but didn’t agree with him. I actually called Acme for recommendations. The food that I feed my dog now, they carry the brand by not the same type, but are able to order it for me and best of all delivery.
I don’t see the issue with the guys. They have been around forever, and will probably know what’s better for your pet then you do. Maybe the problem is the «way too sensitive» and emo people moving into Brooklyn. They are running a business, know what they are doing and for some people, probably like your pet more than they like you. Don’t expect to become best friends, but do expect to get the best options for your pet. Otherwise, welcome to Brooklyn.

Acme is the best! Consistent pricing, friendly service, and free delivery (which matters when you have four cats and need to buy a lot of food and litter). Once when I took in a stray they sent someone over with a litter box even though it was outside their usual delivery hours. Super super nice folks. I love that when I call and say «How are you?» the fellow who answers the phone always says «Everything is wonderful!». It brightens my day every time.
I hope that someday they shift to an electronic inventory and ordering system so I don’t have to recite my credit card number and address every single time. But for now I’ll call their phone-​and-​paper system old-​fashioned and charming.

Four stars for providing simple, friendly, and helpful customer service while carrying the too-​nice dog food that I like to give my too-​spoiled dog at a very reasonable price.
Not much else to say. If I have a different experience in future visits, I’ll be sure to update this review.

I shop here often because I’d rather buy local than online or at some monster chain. Yes, the owners aren’t going to kiss your butt and they’re a little rough around the edges, but hey so am I so how can I really complain? They do help you out when you need it and don’t bug you when you don’t. I appreciate that. Also one of the owners is also a cyclist and I forgot my bike lock one day and really needed to get cat food right before the store closed, so he let me bring my bike inside. How’s that for customer service?
They are lovers of orange cats and have had many over the years. Look for them amongst the shelves or hanging out in the aisles, they’re adorable!

This place is a little pricier than the chain stores, but of course, since it’s a small operation. I’m telling you, it beats lugging all that cat food home every other day and then dreading to take home heavy ass cat litter too.
$ 5 delivery you can’t beat it. The next closest pet food place charges $ 25 for delivery (i know, so stupid), so yes, this is a deal you can’t beat.

On my evening walk with Toby, I discovered Acme Pet Food Inc just a few blocks from my house. I popped in to have a peek at their products and was bombarded with each employee asking me if I needed help every few seconds. They were overbearingly helpful. It was annoying.
The space is small but they have a nice selection of pet food which is expected considering the name of the store. In terms of toys, their inventory could be better. Prices are normal for a independently owned pet store. I’d probably come back purely to purchase pet food but next time without my dog. They have a big orange cat that growled at him for so long, Toby actually growled back.
