Business Owner

Bill Greenwood started Away We Go Postal on Washington Avenue at Sterling Place in 2007. He added a second location on Flatbush Avenue at Bergen Street two years later, and just opened a third branch on Franklin and Sterling on Sept. 17.

But although his business is getting larger, what Greenwood relishes about it is the personal time he gets to spend with the customer.

The 39-​year-​old father of three had a sneaker shop on Long Island when the idea of opening a shipping store came to him. Although he had the storefront, most of his orders were online and he spent most of his time dealing with his website and his inventory rather than acutally meeting the people he served.

Several times I’ve tried to fax from this location. It takes forever to fax and twice even though I received confirmation receipts, the recipients would call to tell me they never received my information and thus costing me so much more for not processing my information on time. So disappointed. I only now use the location for stamps.

Terrible service and business practices. I called to ask if there was a charge for dropping off a USPS package that already has a label on it. The guy that answers said yes, we’ll tell you how much when you get to the store. I asked if I could know the fee so I could decide whether or not I’d be using their services. He said they don’t give the price for their services over the phone. Wow.

I asked if they did media mail. They said yes. They quoted me $ 87 for a box that — in accordance with usps media mail rates — only cost me $ 27 to ship from the post office on Fulton. You do the math.

They WAY overcharge. I just paid $ 10.95 for a 2 pound USPS media mail envelope (without tracking). This would have cost me $ 3.22 at a regular post office. And it was a fifteen minute wait.

Tried to charge me $ 70 for a fedex package. I said no and went and looked it up online. $ 12. If you’re up for a 600% markup, by all means, use their service.

I constantly use the Flatbush Ave store and I think it’s a great service. Whenever I receive a package, they send me an email and I just go to the store and pick it up. The staff is friendly and professional and I’ve never had a problem.
For those who complain that they charge $ 1 to drop off a UPS package, the fact is that UPS now charges them $ 1 per package since they’re not a UPS store. They’re just passing on the charge for a service they do for free. You can’t blame them for that.
Many of the complaints here regard their mark up on supplies and services. They’re a business, and they need to make a profit. They pay rent, utilities, wages, taxes, etc. so of course they mark up services — they couldn’t stay in business if they didn’t. Why would they sell you postage stamps at cost (a frequent complaint)? I agree that their mark up may make their service unaffordable for certain things, but you have a choice. For many people it makes sense to pay extra for the convenience of a nearby place that simplifies the shipping process for you.

Awful customer service. I wish there was a closer drop off to my studio. I was unknowingly charged for using three pieces of tape. The man who helped me was not upfront or truthful with me. I felt sorry for him at first until he told me there wasn’t anything that he could do about charging my credit card extra money.

Incompetent and rude. They lost two packages worth $ 300 and refused to compensate even though they produced the signed receipts with a stranger’s signature. They leave the packages in plain sight and don’t ask for ID so anyone wandering by can pick up your packages. On one earlier occasion they gave me someone else’s package. They are completely unapologetic and rude. Go to Lincoln Postal or somewhere else.

Stolen packages, and they tried to blame me. Packages are all visible to anyone who walks in, AND they don’t check ID, so somebody walked in off the street and pointed at my packages, and the counter clerk handed them over. Then, they refused to compensate us, saying it was somehow our fault.

THIS PLACE IS A HELL-​HOLE.
The employees are totally incompetent and have terrible attitudes, often talking on their phone while supposedly serving their customers. They act like they’re doing you a favor. And they’re SLOW.
Always sold out of boxes and tape and other supplies.
Worse than the DMV.

BAD SERVICE
Always dropped off UPS packages for FREE and would get a receipt.
Guy charged a dollar and didn’t want to give me a receipt.
This inconsistency doesn’t have my trust to leave anything valuable in their possession. And I will never return or recommend them.

DO NOT GO HERE! You might as well get treated like crap at the Debevoise USPS on Atlantic and Nostrand and be sure that your package ships.

BE AWARE that they charge $ 15 for a book of 20 Stamps that costs $ 9.80 at the USPS. There should be some law to stop this but apparently there is none. So walk that extra block to the REAL Post Office so you don’t get ripped off by these jerks. They do not tell you that they up charge for this service. And they are completely rude about it when I inquired about it and will not take returns.

They have bad customer service. The man that posted a package for me was very rude. I wanted to know if he put the stamp that I paid for and he was angry. He answered my question with a question, but the fact is it would have been dumb of me not to have asked him to show me the stamp on the envelope. Then he told me how long he has worked here, which did not help me. I don’t intend to return. It wouldn’t make sense.

I’ve never had an issue.
I’m moving back home and shipped 2 boxes home. It cost me a total of $ 100 to go through UPS and all three packages were delivered back home within 2 days.
The man who helped me was nice and told me it’s cheaper to ship more than one box together instead of two separate shipments. That was nice – he didn’t have to do that. He saw me trying to come in with the heavy boxes and helped me by opening the door and helping me carry the box.
He’s a nice man, I always pass him when I go running past the store. I don’t know why everyone is posting so negatively here. They might charge fees, but I’ll take it for the convenience.

There are a bunch of these locations popping up all over the place. I’m not sure how they’re all related, but they all have the same name.
The location on Franklin Ave. and Sterling Pl. is a 4 — star location. Granted, all we do is ship items out of there, I have never tried to rent a UHaul from them. But the many times we’ve used them has been smooth sailing. They are quick and attentive. It’s definitely a bit more expensive than I would like, but so is everything else in NYC. Coming here instead of any Post Office in the area makes it well worth it.
The location on Nostrand Ave. and Union St. just opened recently and it’s a 1 — star location. It’s much closer to us and we thought it would be just as good for shipping a few gifts, nothing complicated. Shipping a single box of items took over an hour when we were the only people in the store. The attendant, who I also assume was the owner/​manager, did not know how to use his register/​shipping software. He essentially failed at entering numbers into a single screen. Afterwards, we needed tracking information and he was not able to give it to us, and despite us giving him contact information to follow up with, he never got back to us. Luckily the package arrived and our recipients let us know, otherwise it could have been lost forever without any information. We will walk the extra couple blocks to Franklin from now on.
