Back To the Land

The prices are a little high and the staff seem unhappy. There used to be a woman owner who was very nice. I liked it better then. I mostly try to avoid and go to the Park Slope food coop for much better prices, or Trader Joe’s.

Wow, talk about your amazing local organic market. I have never seen so many vegan options in my entire life. The store was well stocked and the staff all very friendly, asking if we needed help finding anything as we perused the store. Can’t wait until my vegan friends visit so we can raid the store together.

Really like this store! The food is very healthy, the staff is very nice and their fruit and vegetable smoothies in the back of the store are great. Lots of selection of health food/​organic products and one of the most thorough health food stores.

Honestly this store offers the best customer service I think I’ve ever gotten. There are a couple of natural beauty products that I like to use that are not sold anywhere except in this store and online. I travel all the way from Bensonhurst Brooklyn every couple of months just to go get those products. every single time that I’ve come here they have had what I was looking for and the staff is beyond helpful. I haven’t tried much in the way of the juice bar or the grocery store but I’m sure it would be great if I did. They also have a large natural remedy section which I’m all about. Check it out! And go hungry because there’s tons of great places to eat within 5 blocks.

Best selection of organic produce in the area. Everything is fresh and delicious. They also have an outstanding selection of organic yogurt, supplements, soaps, toiletries, and tea. I’m knocking off one star because there does seem to be an issue with their not reordering items that people like me have developed a particular fondness for, even after the customer puts in a request. Also, their selection of frozen entrees has not only diminished considerably over the past couple of years, but what they do sell is waaaay overpriced.

The staff here is always helpful and friendly. They have a great selection of products and produce and they carry hard to find vegan/​vegetarian products.

Excellent customer service with an appetizing selection! I mean who carries both oranic spaghetti squash and organic pineapples on the same day!!!

I have spent way too much money here only to be treated coldly by the employees. Everything is overpriced. I always try to support local businesses but looks like I’ll be shopping at whole foods.

In all honesty, I mainly come to Back to the Land to see if if the store has gotten any shipments of my favorite natural hair products and to check out the other soaps, oils, butters, and creams they sell. I’m a big fan of the Qhemet Biologics natural hair care line, and they partnered with Back to the Land several years ago to sell their products. Because it typically can take 2 weeks for the Qhemet Biologics website to ship products to me, I opt to go over to Back to the Land whenever I’m in the area. The store does have a huge selection of natural hair and body products including soaps, oils, creams and the like, and the prices of the actual food tend to be higher compared to the Key Food supermarket down the street.

I like that they carry hard to find, local brands (pumpkin in ready made packs, Soul kofa 105 calorie tofu chicken drumsticks, and the squeeze’s sweet potato burger with cannolini beans, my gluten free wraps, etc.) but a lot of times my favorite item has run out, I am told when to come back (promised it will be in stock by then) and then I show up and that’s not actually the case.
I guess, it’s the fault of the local vendors not delivering on time, but it makes the place look bad.
That being said, It’s pretty easy to find help/​assistance in this store and while it is small, there’s a good selection. There’s an especially robust selection of cereal/​granola. The vitamins/​supplements are also well stocked.
There’s also a juice bar in the front of the store (behind the check out section) that I’ve yet to try.
The main reason why I’ve given this place a low rating is because of the check out experience I’ve had here. Really there’s just one girl in particular who always has a sourpuss look on her face. I stopped going there to mainly avoid seeing her.
It also seems to be something she has against me, as while she was not excessively chipper to the guy behind me, I did hear her utter a greeting to him and a farewell to the person in front of me while she remained tight lipped throughout my entire transaction. What a bitch!
Anyway, I’m glad I’ve weaned myself from the products i used to buy there. They weren’t cheap (nothing in here really is as noted by every review on here) and I can do without the parking hassles. Cops are crawling all over the place trying to give people tickets and their return policy sucks (Only in store credit). I’ll stick to TRADER JOE’S

I have been shopping here for many years.
Yes they are a bit overpriced, but I started shopping here when I first was diagnosed as a celiac. This was one of the few places I could find pasta and cookies that were gluten free.
Since GF items have become more available I do get them elsewhere but I am in PS almost every weekend and still shop here.
There is a large variety of healthy foods here and the staff is more than accommodating.

Good selection of healthy foods, natural bath products, and a juice bar make this place a one stop shop. Yeah, it’s a little pricey but the quality and selection is worth it.

Really like the juice bar at BTTL, great smoothies and juices. Super fresh produce and friendly staff who are always willing to help me find what I need will keep me coming back to this store :)

Wonderful selection, they have a club member card, and they have extremely friendly and helpful staff. I love my local health food store over Whole Foods any day. They carry my favorite vegan cheesecake!

This is a review for the back to the land store only and not the juice bar. The first time I walked into the store, I was thrilled to see all of the amazing health food items they have here! I have a gluten and dairy allergy and they have all kinds of gluten and dairy free stuff like daiya cheese substitutes, lots of different gluten free cookies, crackers, etc. They also have many items you would need for allergy free baking! However they are grossly overpriced! I was shocked at how much everything cost here and how I can get things like pure organic maple syrup (same brand and size at back to the land) for $ 5 cheaper at my local grocery store. All other items can mostly be found online at places like

for so much cheaper that it’s actually worth it to wait a few days for shipping.
Overall — great selection but extremely overpriced. In a pinch it will work.

Wow I’m amazed at some of the reviews for this place! I found prices to be on point with some other bodegas in the neighbourhood, especially for specialty and vegan items (some are priced much cheaper also than the bodegas!). I had no issues with customer service and also found their sale selection area to be pretty fair/​well stocked. I certainly don’t do my regular grocery shopping here or anything, but for harder to find items, it’s perfectly acceptable. I’ve also had zero issues with staff being rude to me!

Back to the land gives me a headache each and every time I pass by their shop or stop in lol. The Smell of pure Organic everything permeates your nostrils when you pass by or walk in, the smell is not bad it’s just very pungent of Natural everything like Wheatgrass lol.
Back to the land has a variety of organic fruits, vegetables and specialty products, and back to the land is my go-​to place for freshly pressed organic juices and smoothies. I try to stop in whenever I can to help detox, cleanse and rid my body of toxins.
They have a nice menu of freshly pressed organic juices that is reasonably priced, you have options to choose from Juices like the «morning cleanser» and the «all greens». Most juice menu options are basically the same, the only difference is that one option might have more carrot in it or less greens than the other. The juices with more greens and less carrot cost about $ 1 more, but everything on their Juice menu is reasonably priced at around $ 5-​$ 6. All of the ingredients used to make their Juice are always Fresh and 100% organic.
I recommend this place for anyone who is interested in juicing, cleansing or willing to try something new for your health.
There are many Fresh Juice shops out there but very rarely do shops use 100% Organic ingredients like Back to the land.
Purchasing your fresh pressed juice at back to the land is much cheaper and less work than doing it yourself at home… I recommend.

My boyfriend and his parents used to come here all the time for their organic foods when he was younger and i have only been here twice now.
The first time we came in, we enjoyed the selection of foods, snacks and items offered, but did feel they were a bit on the pricier side. I ended up picking up a few snacks and we had a shot of wheatgrass *shudders*
We so happened to be there on a day where a local chocolatier was handing out samples of his chocolate. It was so delicious, had all organic ingredients and made with hemp. This man was so sweet and nice! My favorite was the original hemp. The name of the chocolate is called BROOKLYN DARK. I came back this wkend to get another bar and it was sold out!!! He was testing how the chocolate would sell and I hope this shows him he should distribute! More expensive than I normally would spend on a chocolate bar, but I want more! I hope they start selling it somewhere soon! :)

Judging by today’s standards I think Unilocalers are right: a store that doesn’t price competitively, employs unenthusiastic staff, and is lax in cleanliness, deserves mediocre ratings. But I can’t think of Back To the Land without remembering its history…
FOUR DECADES of organic, cruelty-​free, special diet foods, supplements… back before all these things were widely available locally, before the internet and before every-​other celebrity became vegan. Do YOU remember a time before Amazon, Whole Foods, Trader Joe and Fairway? before GNC and Vitamin Shoppe were ubiquitous? before hipsters and Brooklyn twee?
While the store is no longer the unique gem that it used to be, it’s still reliable, and the first place that came to my mind when I decided to try making seitan and I needed vital wheat gluten flour and nutritional yeast flakes. So, for all of the above, I generously award an extra star.
