BAX provides a nurturing, year-​round, performance, rehearsal and educational venue in Brooklyn that encourages artistic risk-​taking and stimulates dialogue among diverse constituencies.

History

Established in 1991.

BAX was founded as a small, pioneer arts organization on an industrial block in the Gowanus area of Brooklyn. In 1998, BAX moved to lower Fifth Avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn to accommodate a growing demand for services. By 2006, BAX had achieved most of its programmatic and infrastructure expansion goals and seized the opportunity to expand to a second floor and create the BAX Building. BAX currently has five full-​time and four part-​time employees, a roster of 24 teaching artists, four interns and volunteers.

My daughter attended BAX day camp last summer and will be returning this summer. They do a great job of combining art, movement and creativity with different themes every week. And there’s a «showcase» toward the end of the week so the kids can perform for parents/​caregivers and display their art.
Because of our positive summer experience, we turned to BAX for a joint birthday party for our daughter with a friend from school. None of the other kids had been to BAX before and throughout the party, parents kept coming up to me and saying how terrific they thought it was. They noted that the space is open, clean and bright and the activities were well thought-​out, interactive, and really got the kids moving. The teachers were terrific with the kids (I was impressed at how the lead teacher quickly learned the names of 20 kids) and were great with party logistics. The kids seemed to be having fun throughout and both birthday girls said it was their best birthday party ever!

There was an open house I attended from a flyer that I saw, figured to check it out. So glad we did. The space is clean, spacious, has several levels and a spot to sit while waiting for the little ones to finish class equipped with toys and books. The teachers are nice and seem to know how to work with children exceptionally well. It has been nothing but a positive experience so far, so glad we gave it a shot!

I have a very close relationship with BAX, and I use the space regularly for rehearsals. It is one of the most pleasant that I frequent.
I know behind-​the-​scenes how thoroughly the space is cared for, but it really shows to renters. The floors are as clean as dance floors can be when used 13hrs/​day, 7days/​wk. The NYSCA-​subsidized nonprofit rehearsal rates are unbeatable, and rental rates for other events/​performances are extremely reasonable.
BAX also does a lot for it’s community, be it through Space Grants or Residencies to professionals in the field, youth and adult education programs, or participating in community events like the 5th ave Fair. Definitely worth checking out, this is an organization that really has something to offer everyone.

Forest Hills, NY
We zoomed by this place on our way to a showing of The Tragic Story of Dr. Frankenstein. This very small but cozy theater is barely noticeable except for a light shining on a red door, and vertical letters spelling B A X. The 2nd floor is the ticket booth, and the third floor is where the stage and two unisex bathrooms are located. It can get really hot in the auditorium, as the audience is sitting about 10 feet away from the stage on folding chairs, right in front of all the stage lights. I highly recommend wearing something light, so you can take off any layers as needed.
