Bicycle Station

i wrote a review of mike four years ago and he is still the best deal in town– I’ve been to the peddle pusher, the old metro bikes, red lantern… it’s not even close. if you need your bike fixed you might have to leave it for a couple days, know why? Cause he’s so busy saving everyone’s ass!

I blew a tire on the 5 Boro Bike Tour and the volunteers at the rest area had run out of spares. Luckily this place was only a few blocks away. I was in and out in five minutes for a better price than I’d get in Pennsylvania. Saved my butt (which wore out on the way to Staten Island).

I started off as a customer of Bicycle Station back when it was located in Prospect Heights (over five years ago) and although the shop is no longer conveniently located to where I live, I cannot imagine going anywhere else for any of my bicycle needs (whether it be a tune-​up, flat tire, new parts, etc.). This is all because the owner, Mike Rodriguez, is simply the best. He’s super nice and great at listening to customers (without any air of smugness as one so often finds among Brooklyn’s bicycle elitists) – and as a highly experienced and accomplished cyclist himself he can answer any imaginable question you may have. He always completes whatever work you need to have done extremely quickly, and on top of all this the prices he charges for his services are always incredibly fair and can’t be beat anywhere. I’m giving him a five star review only because it’s not possible to leave six stars. Thanks Mike!

Best bike shop anywhere! Mike’s prices are so much lower and he didn’t try to sell me a bunch of stuff I didn’t need. If I had left my bike at the first place I took it I would have paid $ 55 more and the tune up would have taken twice as long. I felt like he had my best interest at heart and my bike rides like new. I won’t go anywhere else again.

Super helpful guy who is also the subject of a documentary. He had repaired my bikes very well and at a lower cost than pretty much any place in NYC. He did my tune ups, replaced parts, changed tires, replaced brakes, etc. and when I moved, he gave me a box to pack my bike with helped me pack my bike up for free. I certainly miss him now that I’m no longer in the city. Highly recommend this shop!

Mike is awesome and extremely skilled. His rates are excellent and the service is very fast. He is honest and passionate about the work that he does, and always does his best to please all the customers who come into his shop. I don’t know why anyone would rate Bicycle Station anything less than 5 stars. I will always come back here even if I have to walk a long way (the only public transportation nearby is a bus stop, if you can get your bike on the bus), but it’s not a long walk (less than 20 minutes) from the nearest subway stations.

I was hit by a van coming off the Manhattan Bridge and realized that my rim had been bent out of commission, so I walked into this bike shop I’d never been to before and promptly started crying when I tried to explain what I needed because I was still so shaken. The employee or possibly owner was incredibly calm and comforting, and replaced my rim with a used one for $ 25. He made sure to clean it carefully, test it out, and fill my tires, all in record time. I highly recommend this place!

I bought my bike from Mike over 2 years ago based upon a referral from my dog walker (and because the guy in dumbo is a crook).
He offered a competitive price and threw in free service for 3 years. Cynical from my other experience in Dumbo, I rolled my eyes and thought «yeah right, as if you’ll even be around in 3 years». More than 2 years into this, I have no regrets and I know this dude is the real deal. He stands behind his word, he can fix anything and is especially good at re-​purposing old parts that get beat up from riding the potholes that we call New York City.
I realize that the sticker price of the bicycle is probably a very small piece of the puzzle if you ride the bike long enough. It’s a lot cheaper to get used parts for wear and tear damage and it’s been a lot cheaper to maintain my bike with Mike over the years.

Mike is the best!!! I’m a new biker — haven’t own a bike since I was a child. I told him what I wanted, and he ordered the most perfect bike for me. There was absolutely no pressure to buy — he just ordered the bike, it came, and then I was able to test it out, and I fell in love with it! Been riding it for 2 months now, and I still love it.
I checked out 4 other bike shops and did tons of research before I finally made my way to Bicycle Station and I am so happy with my decision. Save yourself time and just go there. It’s a small place, not as «new» as the other hipster bike spots in Brooklyn, but way better! I felt like I could truly trust him. And! He added a kick stand to my bike and secured the seat, totally free of charge!

Mike is honest, honest, honest. Rare in NY for a sole proprietor or a small business who most of the time try to extract as much from you as possible because of the lack of market of certain service/​parts or senses that you’re desperate. Mike runs the shop because of passion, not to rip off people. I’ve had sour experiences elsewhere and good ones here — that my last problem (nut fell off so my crank arm fell off) I decided to push/​walk and take the train there instead of risking it with other lowly rated (on Unilocal) bike shops… worth the 1.5-hour trip.

Taken my bikes here for tune ups for the past few years. Always great service. Super friendly and great work done on my bike. I’m bad at upkeep and don’t know a lot about bikes so I’m always worried I’m getting either bad work done or talked into purchasing more than I need, but I feel completely comfortable and safe bringing my bike here. 5 stars!

Stopped in to get a replacement piece for my toddlers inexpensive bike. The guy in the shop didn’t have it, but recommended I check out nearby places. Turns out he looked at the piece and I only need a new lug «nut» not a «whole new piece». Super cheap fix and he was nice. Will be back.

I’ve been bringing my beater bike to Mike for years — and even though I just moved farther away, I’m still going to give my business to him whenever possible because he does excellent work, takes great care of you, and is affordable. He’s simply good people, and I hope his small business weathers the wave of gentrification sweeping the area. I admittedly take pretty bad care of my bike (stored it in a damp basement, never greased the chain, inflated my tires once in a blue moon) and once I started commuting with it during the winters, took it to him to get it street-​ready and fix the eternally skipping chain. After he tuned and cleaned it up, it rode more smoothly than it ever had. When the skipping started to return and I wanted less-​responsive brakes, I came back and he adjusted everything as I waited for free. I’ve since brought my bike for a tune-​up at the end of every winter, and he always takes extra good care of it. He’s also generous with his knowledge — he’ll show you what he’s doing and tips for how to keep your bike in good shape. When I had him install a wooden crate on a friend’s new bike, he also came up with a creative (yet still stylish) option and adjusted it with a smile when I returned to change the height a few days later. My bike is running as smoothly as it is today thanks to him.
You won’t go wrong with Bicycle Station — I highly recommend them!

My bike rode great today after tune-​up! Which was really needed — it’s been a few years… I highly recommend.

I agree with Michael F. that Bicycle Station is the best bike repair shop in Brooklyn. Mike the owner is a great mechanic who is passionate about what he does. He’s also a very nice person and easy to talk to. Today I picked up my bike from a Park Slope bike repair shop I’d taken my bike for a tune-​up to against my better judgment. A few things were wrong/​worse, so I thought I should just go see Mike on Park Ave like I should’ve done in the first place. He figured out what was wrong and fixed it in five minutes. His prices are very fair — I actually paid him more than he quoted. He’s done a great job every time he’s worked on my bike.
It may seem out of the way for some in Boerum Hill, Prospect Park or Park Slope, but if you are able to ride your bike, it is no more than a 15 minute ride and is a straight shot down Vanderbilt from Sterling Pl – just turn left on Park and the shop is two short blocks over. But if you can’t ride it, it’s worth the quality of work to get your bike there and ride home. You will not be disappointed!

Mike is a master mechanic and a good person. The quality of work is excellent, and I like talking with him while I wait for my turn for my bike to get fixed.
Upon coming here, one will notice that it’s a small and cluttered shop. Don’t let that fool you. Mike is one of the best mechanics out there, and he has some pretty sweet used parts.
If I had one complaint it’s that Mike likes to ride more than fix bikes. But that would be a very selfish complaint.

Phenomenal. One of the only bike shops open in Brooklyn on Labor Day. Walked in with a broken pedal and a flat tire and Mike hooked me up with a new tube, new pedal, and lessons on how to replace my tire the next time I get a flat. Incredibly friendly and he worked past his closing time on a holiday to get me straight. Set me up with a used crank to keep the price down and attached my toe clip to the new pedal. Out the door for $ 30. Awesome.
Free air hose outside too. Just a fantastic place run by an awesome guy.

At the beginning i was just a bicyclist who simply liked to ride and to save money so I invested in titanium frame bike. After the first year of riding, on my first service trip to bike shop I learn something new: owning a titanium bike is like helping your best friend who file bankruptcy by buying out his Ferrari for the price of Ford and insure the car somewhere in Texas…(assuming you can afford Ford:)). You cannot tell anybody you paid Ford price but all assume if you own a Ferrari you can afford 300 $ Oil change. Same story: my Bike was purchased on Ebay.
From year to year the bicycle condition was getting worse and worse. I visited all the shops that was recommended: Syd’s, Soho Habitat, Gotham Bikes, another in TriBeCa, one around 34 Str and plenty uptown… I would walk in and all will say: Ah, MOOTS! And a week later i will walk out with same bike in same bad condition minus money I paid. All the people I talk to either scam me by selling extra or simply were lazy. It’s now the bike is old (2006 model) but years ago I would not leave it outside parked. So you can link bike and service change together better.
I used to have hard time to explain what was wrong. I did not know that «skipping » has a termin as ghost shifting, «squicking» is a signal that you need new pads. Oh, I did not know what «pads» are. Neither spokes or chain-​stretch. I learn all the terminology but even speaking same language did not helped until I visited Mike.
I made a selection based on Unilocal.The only negativity i read about his shop was the timing. However, I preferred getting bicycle in good condition so timing was not an obstacle. I jumped on the train and walked to the store: the front tubeless tire was flat. Another store sold it for me. Next day it was flat. I came back, they inflated it again but next morning tire was flat again. It was pointless to argue. I recived no exchange or refund. I simply said bye to the money. I forgot to mention that tire they sold me did not match in size the second one. They returned a Frankenstein to me basically.
It took a while to get bicycle back– true, but! Bicycle grey color is polished to the point it is glowing in the dark. Everything is lubed, cleaned, no more nasty sound when stopping. All job priced accordingly. I did not feel overcharged and most importantly I finally seen some difference and Mike apologized for taking so long so he offered to deliver it from Bk to Manh. Whoa! Really?!
I will most likely ride the bike tonight. The shop is far from were I actually leave but nevertheless I be returning customer.

M. and I got our bikes here in the beginning of Spring and have been coming here for 95% of our bike needs.
It’s a laid back shop, no frills and this is not REI so the selection is limited. The pricing seems fair and they would give you advice and help you out too. When we went the first time, Mike let us test drive the bikes unsupervised. When we decided, they chained up our seats so it wouldn’t get stolen when parking on the streets and gave us the bells on the house.
My fender came loose after a few rides so I went back. Mike apologized for it, fixed it and doubled checked everything else before I rode off again.
We always have had good experiences here and just like how Mike and the gent who works back there are cool with us, we are cool with them too. This is a local business and everyone is genuine and friendly.
