Specialties

Bird is one of Brooklyn’s premier fashion destinations, with three locations in Park Slope, Cobble Hill and Williamsburg. It was recently voted Best Women’s Boutique in New York City by New York Magazine and Top Visionary Boutique in the United States by Lucky Magazine. Bird is also the very first LEED-​certified retail store in New York City.

The Williamsburg store also features regular exhibits of photography and art. Currently on display is Endless Summer, an exhibition of images by Brooklyn-​based photographer Flora Hanitijo.

History

Established in 1999.

The original Bird store in Park Slope opened in 1999. The 2nd location in Cobble Hill opened in 2006. The 3rd and largest location, designed by Norwegian architect Olé Sondresen, opened in Williamsburg in 2009. Bird maintained strict sustainability and green-​building standards throughout construction and was consequently awarded the coveted LEED-​CI Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Featured women’s collections include 3.1 Phillip Lim, Acne, A.P.C., Alexander Wang, Christophe Lemaire, Isabel Marant, Maison Martin Margiela Ligne 6, Proenza Schouler, Rachel Comey, Thakoon, Tsumori Chisato, Whit and Zero + Maria Cornejo.

Business Owner

Bird owner Jen Mankins got her start in fashion working as an assistant buyer for Barneys New York and later became the head buyer for Steven Alan. Inspired by the independent designers she worked with, she co-​founded the women’s fashion label Charlotte Corday before returning to retail and realizing her life-​long dream of owning her own store. She travels for inspiration, seeking out the best fashion collections and design objects from Denmark to Delhi, her latest obsession.

I love Bird in Park Slope and buy jewelry there several times a year. They salespeople in the park slope location are lovely and helpful. Apparently the hiring doesn’t translate to the Cobble Hill location. I came in yesterday ready to buy a ring by my favorite designer, and had the RUDEST salesperson I’ve ever encountered in retail. Initially indifferent, progressively offensive, this blasé brunette with straight dark brown hair pulled back in a pony tail, couldn’t be bothered to wait 5 minutes to help me try on rings without texting on her iphone right in front of me while I waited for her to pull sizes from the case. When I asked for a size 6.5 and 7 (to wear on my pointer finger) she disdainfully replied «sorry, but we never carry sizes larger than a 6…» I suggest you hit up the park slope location for way friendlier staff who understand that they can’t act like 16-​year-​old ice cream counter attendants waiting to clock out if they want to sell high end products.

I pass by Bird often oogling at the clothes in the window wishing I could go in and really look. My sister visited last week and treated me to a new dress, I am so lucky! I thought we would have to walk out after looking because it was too expensive, it was not. We bought the darlin coral dress with three sweet buttons in the middle of the back that i saw in the window. The salesperson on Sat. was very helpful and pleasant. I wasn’t convinced the dress fit right and she assured me it is not a problem to return. I am going to see if next size fits better, if not I know I will find something there I love no matter.

Love to support local shops and love out of the ordinary designs. Bird has it all and nice salespeople too. There are definitely pricey items but even if you can’t afford them you can browse and get inspired. The sales always offer good finds.
The staff is friendly and attentive but doesn’t micromanage or hover. I often hear them offer to call another location for items and I always ask them their opinion on what I try on.

Anyone who has gone into Bird knows the store is amazingly merchandised. Some of my favorite pieces have come from Bird: my Isabel Marant linen blazer and my glow in the dark Repettos, to name two. But what drove me to write tonight was the service. It seems a fair number of reviewers haven’t experienced what I did tonight, which is all the more reason to gush.
I was working late but needed to buy a gift for a co-​workers’ birthday tomorrow. Bird was closing before I’d be able to leave work. After arranging a drop-​off at neighboring Clover Club, the two girls working let me buy the bag over the phone, the wrapped it adorably, and dropped it with the hostess upon closing so I could pick it up on the way home. I was so touched they’d bend over backwards to help, and I will definitely return because of it, and all those cute sack dresses they always have!

Ugh. I really want to support indie businesses in my neighborhood but I just can’t get behind this store.
Don’t get me wrong, the store merchandise is great. They have a good selection of designers for every price point and finding a gift for someone (or myself) is usually pretty easy.
What I don’t like are the sales people. I’ve been in the store maybe 4 – 5 times and I’ve received nothing but indifference every single time. I visited this past weekend with my sister and didn’t receive a «hi» when we entered (no acknowledgment at all), no offer to help find a size, no eye contact when my sister asked to try something on, no «thank you» when she bought a shirt, and no «bye» when we left. I think that is just straight-​up crazy! There were only 2 other people shopping in the store so it wasn’t like they were swamped!
I’m not trying to make friends or anything but the job of the sales person is to sell me things… so freakin sell me something!!! Stop sitting on your high chair behind the counter and completely ignoring the fact that I want to spend money! The management of this shop needs to reexamine their staff. This store might as well be online only if the sales people aren’t going to bother selling anything but their indifferent attitude. I do a better job of selling to myself when I’m shopping online than when I’m shopping the store.

Ok, so I was only here once and I don’t think I’ll be back. It’s very small, they have over priced items, not just expensive, but overpriced! The staff was less than helpful and when I was leaving, I was the one to say goodbye and thank you, that just seems backwards to me!

I had to do this. I’m a longstanding customer and one of their best customers, the kind of customer that receives a generous gift certificate during the holidays customer.
As of late, I’ve come to look for certain things that I’m pretty certain will be there and will probably not sell out based on the price. I’ve always been happy with the customer service whether it’s hands-​on but not overtly, or simply friendly and conversational — i don’t expect much, in fact, i’m good at hi and bye. The last few times I’ve come in and was neither greeted nor offered any help. I specifically asked a tallish shoulder length blonde for a specific style and size of a dress and without emotion or candor she replied a simple: ‘no’ and turned her back from me. I was one of 2 people in the store so perhaps it was the groundswell of effort that was required of her that resulted in the exacting customer service i received.
I’ve done retail before while in college, i get it, it’s brain surgery, but this woman had to be 30+ yrs old and one would imagine her social growth was mature and complete enough to dip one’s toe in the emotionally draining world of retail. Clearly her night study of astrophysics sucked the people skills required to offer some customer service. Yes, it’s hard to be nice, what with having to memorize the inventory and comings and goings of people buying things in different sizes in 3 different locations.
For the purposes of illustration, I’m going to call her Janice as she had the same spaghetti hairdo of Janice from the band in the Muppets. Not being a shy girl, I again asked Janice for a different size of dress that I had in my hand. It was tangible now and she could not refuse the request. The dress existed. I again received a ‘no’ answer and another woman literally came from behind as if to tackle Janice with the size requested. The one star goes to the other woman who produced the size I had inquired about.

NEVER SHOPPING HERE AGAIN. The girl literally ran after me out of the store, and asked to look in my bag — when she saw that I clearly hadn’t taken anything from the store, SHE DIDN’T APOLOGIZE. How’s that for accusing someone of shoplifting?

Yes, the clothing at Bird is expensive. But it is clothing that would be expensive no matter where you bought it. They also do have sales at the end of every season. I have always found Bird to be an amazing place to shop. Their sales help is always incredibly kind, sweet and helpful. The interior of the boutique is gorgeous and clothing is generally available in a range of sizes. Further more, whomever their buyer is always seems to pick out the best pieces in each collection. I also admire Bird for supporting local Brooklyn designers, such as Mociun. The staff and store also seem to have really good working relationships with the designers they carry. If I could give Bird six stars I honestly would.

Its a nice store, but me and my girlfriend came in and did NOT get greeted. We didn’t feel very welcomed in the store at all .the next customer who walked into the store was white and she got a «hi how are you doing?» …can you say racist?

Wow. It seems like a lot of the reviewers are just pissed that they can’t afford the clothes here. Um. That’s like giving Daniel or Per Se a one-​star review because it was a pricey dinner. You want cheap clothes? Hit up Zara or H&M, kids. I go there for my cheap & fun quickies. I go to high-​end boutiques like Bird for my long-​standing love affairs with Isabel Marant, Phillip Lim 3.1, and Vena Cava. That being said, it helps to come during sales.
(I only give it 3 stars because I find the racks a bit too packed to actually shop and because I don’t find the store as well-​edited as I would prefer, as the taste tends to skew towards «Park Slope Mom».)

It looks cute when you walk by but as soon as you walk in you smell the smell. It’s like your grandmothers attick but worse and the clothing could be from there too. Gross!
Plus it stupidly expensive for crappy looking clothes that look like they are the quality of something you could find at a less expensive store down ther street. Who shops here?

All their shoes are marked up by at least $ 5 compared to prices at other stores. Why bother even shopping here then? You can forget about the sales staff giving you the time of day if you’re not accessorized with a Birkin bag and other high-​end paraphernalia. With such prices and attitude, how is this store even surviving in a low-​key place like Cobble Hill?

For the working hipster girl or trendy young yuppie mom, bird has got it all. For a price, that is… this shop is definitely not offering any great bargains. Come here and get ready to drop some serious cash if you find anything that tickles your fancy.
Lots of indie designer lables like Loeffler Randall, Me & Ro, and the like. There’s a lovely selection of jewelry at an equally appropriate price point, so guys, take note because you could score big here on a gift for your lady friend! (And then score big for yourself afterwards, if you catch my drift).
This bird will stick with Dear Fieldbinder down the block for her shopping sprees instead of hitting up the racks at bird.

All I know is that the staff is incredibly friendly, the design of the space is very lovely and inviting, and the items in the window look like things I should buy for my girlfriend, and she would get all happy and tell me how great they are, and I would nod my head as if I knew all along.
