Brooklyn Zoo & Aquarium Pet Store

I’ve been meaning to post for a long while but after today’s events it’s now necessary. I got my cat from here 10 months ago beautiful kitty about 3 months old at the time. I was told that she (Stella) was check out by the local vet and is in good health. They did also say to me not to let any doctors scare me about the scares in her eyes as she was born that way and is perfectly fine. It’s my fault as that should have been a major red flag. First, imagine my surprise when I go to get her spayed (3 weeks later), I learn that she was actually a BOY!!! (change name to Luke). And that the cloudiness in his eyes should be a major cause for concern as it’s a sign of possible blindness in the future or any other birth defect that’ll cost me later. After examining him, my vet recommended I consider giving him back. But how could I… I had grown attached and if the pet shop didn’t even know he was a boy after supposedly getting him check out, would they even take good care of him… Obviously, I was lied to and couldn’t return him to people who didn’t look out for his well being. So I kept him and hoped for the best.
Last week, he stopped using the bathroom and was immediately concern and took him back to the vet. Luke was severely backed up, his colon had stretched 3x its size and pushed his bladder to another position. affecting his ability to pee. After some testing, it was discovered he had major organ issues and developed a condition that affects many elderly cats. He’s only A YEAR OLD!!!
Luke had been hospitalized for a week to help void his bowels and even to pee as he could no longer do that on his own. Today, I had to make the difficult decision to put him to sleep as he was in so much pain and had weaken so much he couldn’t eat or walk. I’m just so angry, sad, infuriated and feel the rug had been pulled from under my feet. This is just unfair!

I’ve taken my dog to them a few times since we moved here. He always comes back looking handsome & smelling so nice! It’s a local pet shop with no frills. I only go elsewhere to get his nails grinded as they don’t have that machine. Otherwise this place is great!

I suggest that Unilocalers read the filtered reviews for Brooklyn Zoo & Aquarium. I held off reviewing it for a long time, not sure that I wanted to tell my story. I don’t want to discourage anyone from buying a pet there, because pet-​store animals need good homes just like shelter animals do, but don’t believe everything the staff tells you. They’re only interested making sales. Years ago I used to take my kids there like a trip to a real zoo. It was delightful then, and the place seemed clean and smelled pretty good. We’d stay a long time looking at the birds, small mammals, the reptile section, and the beautiful saltwater tanks with exotic fish. More recently the animal areas have been smelling pretty bad. We bought a kitten and viewed it as an expensive sort of rescue, since the cats were being kept in tiny wire-​bottom cages and many were lying in their stinky litterboxes because it was the only smooth area. How humiliating that must be for naturally-​fastidious cats. As a selling point the staff said our kitten had received all her shots and been «vetted» by a local vet, but she turned out to have worms. If we hadn’t gone from the store straight to our own vet for a thorough checkup, our other cats at home would have gotten worms too. Shameful!

The staff sucks! They look at you like you have 10 heads I go in for crickets almost daily for years and they still look at me like they don’t know what I’m there to get

The staff aren’t very friendly. I felt as though I was intruding on their private club, lol.
