History

Established in 2010.

Cantina Royal serves up Executive Chef Julio MM’s unique vision of Mexican Cuisine. Inspired by traditional cantinas in Mexico City, where he is from, this simple yet bold food is made with only the freshest ingredients, with all salsas, down to the table hot sauce, being made in house.

A lover of all things spicy, Julio MM is a Dr Frankenstein of Salsas. His brash and surprising (but always delicious) combos explore the actions and experiences of the different chiles in your mouth and body, and have made Cantina Royal a destination for spicy lovers. Soon to be launched is their salsa line, 303 Salsas, which is now available for sale in the restaurant.

Meet the Business Owner

Julio M.

Business Owner

Executive Chef and owner Julio MM grew up in Mexico City. In 1985, the densely populated city had a huge earthquake, which killed thousands and displaced thousands upon thousands more. Julio’s family, along with many others, were moved into whatever structures still were standing, in their case a hotel. Unlike many families, his liked it so much that they just stayed, and he grew up in a hotel. This meant that family dinners were always eaten out, and Julio got schooled from a young age on restaurants and the culture of dining. From high french cuisine to street tacos, Julio devoured it all, and has wanted to be in the business ever since.

After working in kitchens all around Mexico City, and serving as a chef and menu consultant at Papatzul in Manhattan, Cantina Royal in Williamsburg Brooklyn is Julio’s first restaurant of his own.
