Capoeira Guanabara New York

My 8 year old son has been taking classes since last spring and loves it! Manuela and Karl are patient and kind and have really high expectations. The class is 45 minutes of training, learning and refining. There is then a final 15 minutes of roda– where adults and children play together. Fantastic!

WHAT AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE! I am a newbie to Capoeira, but after taking a class with Capoeira Guanabara New York I’m convinced this is THE activity for optimal physical /​mental /​emotional growth. I was nervous to start but the instructors make you feel very comfortable. I was also shocked how much skill I actually had, which means just about anyone can jump in and feel like they are actually «doing» capoeira from the start. I suggest highly — especially if you are looking for a sport /​activity that leaves you feeling like an accomplished warrior at the end.

Love it love it love it! Very well rounded in cardio training, conditioning and general Capoeira skill /​knowledge instructors down to earth. You get a great 2 hour sweat session. From beginning to end everyone is very engaged. Great sense of community, awesome for for physical and emotional health. 100% Recommend!

If you’re interested in studying Capoeira, I highly recommend joining Omulu Capoeira Brooklyn. Carl and Manouela are dedicated instructors that pay attention to the needs of their students. Class sizes vary per session which is great because there are days when you can get a lot of personal attention and potentially master a move. If you want a lot of feedback, come on a Thursday and stay from 6:45 — 9:45 for a solid sweat session and a whole lot of progress.

Attended a two hour (6:30 — 8:30) class tonight as a beginner and had a lot of fun. We started off class at 6:45 with about 10 minutes of stretching, followed by 10 — 15 minutes of cardio (we had to jog around the space in formation, and then do variations on jumping jacks, crawls across the floor, high knees, etc.), followed by learning some actual capoeira moves like the jenga, the duck (that’s not the word they used), 2 kicks and the fake.
After that, we got in a circle and practiced the moves we had learned with live music/​drumming. The pros danced/​sparred with the beginners and were very helpful and patient with us. At the end of class the pros demonstrated what the advanced level students were capable of — fast kicks, flips, spins, etc. while we sang and clapped along.
The space is located in the basement of a school gym so there is plenty of room to move about, and our class size was pretty large (approximately 15 or so newbies and about 8 to 10 pros). Since I attended an event I’m not sure if this is representative of what a normal class size would be.
Parking was really easy to find because class was at 6:30pm and the street parking rules are in effect after 6pm in the area. Otherwise you can pay for 30 mins at a metered parking spot further down on schermerhorn. Also, this is a very commercial area so most people are leaving work around that time, freeing up parking.

I first heard of Omulu Capoeira through an online deal and wanted to try it out. Two months later I can honestly say it has been a life changer. Capoeira has made me more fit, energetic, and confident. Coming in I didn’t know what to expect, but was put at ease by instructors Carl and Manouela. They are very knowledgeable, patient, and most importantly encouraging. They take the time to help break down movements so beginners can get a good grasps on the basics and gain confidence to improve their movements. I feel very lucky to have Omulu Capoeira be my first experience in the art. Their students are a great group of people who are very friendly and welcoming. Classes are so much fun. You are guaranteed to work up a sweat and learn something new all with live music and singing.

Being part of Omulu Capoeira Brooklyn is amazing! Instructors Manouela and Carl take really good care of you – whether you are completely brand new and nervous, or coming from years of experience. Everyone is incredibly warm and welcoming and will make you feel like you are an important part of the school from the very beginning. It’s a no drama kind of place. Train hard, play hard, laugh and sweat hard. They are also connected to a much wider network of the Omulu family all over the country and the world. So you will have places to play and instant friendships all over the place. I can’t recommend Omulu Capoeira enough – they are simply the best.

I’ve been going to Omulu for about 8 months and I haven’t one bad day. Manouela and Carl are great teachers very knowledgable and patient. The students are welcoming and the instructors do a great job at pushing everyone at their individual pace. Capoeira is a great workout focusing on balance, rhythm, flexibility and strength. A full package for anyone aiming to improve their mind body and soul.

I am reviewing Omulu Brooklyn from an outsiders perspective. My boyfriend has been taking class here for the past year and he absolutely loves it. His attitude has been more positive and his energy increased. I attended his group’s performance on a boat this summer, it was really fun experience, seems like a great group of people. I’ve also donated to this organization in the past and am happy to do so again in the future. Happy 2^nd Anniversary, Omulu Capoeira Brooklyn!
