I had the crab rangoon and chicken and broccoli for dinner last night, and I was violently ill shortly thereafter. I’m not saying it was related, but I’m not saying it wasn’t. Either way, the chicken and broccoli wasn’t very good.

I came in at 3:58pm for the lunch special. She was on the phone the whole time. After she got off, I said I’ll take the lunch special. She said it’s too late. But I said you were on the phone for the last 5 minutes talking. She said no it’s too late. She didn’t say sorry or anything, she grilled at me and gave me a attitude.

This place is about 2 blocks from the school I work at, and I know the kids come here often for lunch/food after school. Came here recently for lunch with a co-worker and got the lunch special. Food was alright(I got the mixed vegetables with chicken), but I’d say the hot and sour soup that came with it was much better than the food itself. Definitely wouldn’t come to this place as school ends though, the police stand by the train station and as one of the exits is right next to the door, it looked like there was going to be a police invasion.

This is the nearest of the Neighborhood chinese takeouts to me. I come here if I’m feeling lazy and cant be bothered to make rice, and yeah its kind of ok for that and the food tastes ok but I might head further afield for anything more adventurous or exotic and I must admit the that the piles of half cooked chicken wings dont do much to whet my appetite either. The staff could cheer up too, theyre hardly the happiest campers and dont go out of your way to make one feel welcome. But hey maybe thats just me, ill probably head back there now and again.

China Hong is never ever open when I walk by. I thought it was a shut down restaurant. Oops, never say never because it actually had its rolling steel door raised last night. Inside looks like every other Chinese take-out within 15 square miles. To give it a chance, we ordered fried rice. Plain fried rice with no shrimp or BBQ pork or chicken or veggies. I expected it to be pretty bland, and it was. Probably because it was plain. D’oh. At least it didn’t have a greasy taste so that is a plus. Next time I see them open I’ll try their fried chicken wings. They had a huge mound of wings sitting on their stovetop and looked pretty tasty from a distance. I’ll leave the Moo goo gai pan and Broccoli beef over rice reviews to General Tso and other Brooklynites.

Not bad at all. Roast pork fried rice was tasty… a little heavy on the sprouts and onions, but otherwise tasty. Eggrolls were alright… good size but definitely needed soy sauce for more flavor. Good value for the money. Paid $ 13 for a quart of roast pork fried rice and four eggrolls.

Don’t order the beef. You will get nothing but pink slime. Seriously. There was no beef to be found in my beef with broccoli. Disgusting.

Beware. This place seems to have recently changed hands. All of the faces behind the counter are new. There are new menus. And the food has turned to garbage. My partner brought home a dinner last night and threw out half of it. The egg roll was dripping grease. Not good. Tonight, I was gave them a second chance. I stopped by and ordered a dinner. Everyone was very friendly. The food came quickly. Very quickly, I thought. I took it home and the chicken in garlic sauce gave the appearance of having been stewed all day. It was a sludge version of the familiar standard. And it was… sweet. No surprise, the egg roll was dripping grease. Something has changed for the worse at this neighborhood stalwart. China Hong is best avoided until someone straightens out the problems that have occurred there.

This is the definition of a 3 star place. Nothing special, but tends to be one of my defaults. The appetizers are particularly good, though the entrees tend to be a bit bland. Perfect chinese food for a hungover Sunday afternoon, but that’s about it. I agree that the cold noodles are particularly good.

Excellent cold spinach noodles with sesame sauce, and very good fried pork dumplings. The food was fresh tasting, with nice quality ingredients, and nothing swimming in grease. The sesame sauce on the noodles was really a stand out. I love this dish, but I’d almost given up ever ordering it because it’s so often bland and oily. Not here – the noodles are chewy and fresh, the sauce is tasty and peanut-y with a nice little zing, and there’s fresh lettuce and toasted sesame seeds sprinkled on top. Yumm! As for the dumplings, they’re not the very best I’ve had, but they’re very good too. Quality meat, nicely seasoned, the skin is thick and chewy(in a good way), and they’re pan fried, not deep fried, which I feel is essential. Having been disappointed by so many Chinese take-out places in the past, I was reluctant to try this place. But its location right around the corner from my apartment, coupled with my desperate craving for dumplings last night, finally broke my resistance. I’m so glad I tried it. It won’t change your life or anything, but it’s definitely 2 levels above your typical Chinese take-out place. Oh, and it’s cash only. Which is always a little annoying, but some places are worth it and this is one of them.

i know what youre thinking… 4 stars for a chinese takeout place? but heres why… 1. food tastes clean, is not overly seasoned(disclaimer: this is still considered greasy chinese food) 2. STAFFISSUPERNICE! the people that run this place always greet customers with a smile! to my acknowledgement, no other chinese takeout place has ever offered this. 3. delivery is quick and food arrives in good condition. 4. for some ridiculously delicious reason, im a sucker for their chicken wings.

I was disappointed because I thought it would be average, but it was so blah. The meal was completely unsatisfying. The lo mein had no flavor, the wonton soup was so doughy with barely any meat and the broth lacked the flavor of a good wonton soup. The fried rice was a strange yellow color, but was ok, and the spicy chicken dish(I think it was the Szechuan chicken) was not spicy and the sauce was syrupy. As so many others have asked – why is there no good Chinese in the neighborhood!!! Why do the Chinese restaurants think we still want Americanized Chinese food? It’s like the AmeriChinese food from the 80s and 90s. We live in New York city and want to eat the Chinese food that they actually eat in China!

Definitely better than what you would expect from a NYC chinese take-out place. First off– it’s clean! They’ve been rocking an A on their window for quite a while. Great eggrolls here! crisp, not overcooked, a slightly flaky exterior. Their boneless spare ribs here are SO good! I watched as they actually roasted them in a very hot broiler, making sure they turned out perfectly, not burnt at all, and then they didn’t drench them in sauce. They were so good. The rice that they use in their fried rice is pretty weird though… it’s got this yellow-ish appearance to it, reminded me of spanish rice a little bit. I’ve also had their sweet and sour chicken which was great! again not too much sauce. yum.

What do you look for in a good Chinese restaurant? If it’s quality ingredients and healthy vegetarian options, or if you’re looking for a classy establishment that won’t leave you with a carb/salt hangover … try Andy’s or Lichee Nut on Montague St. There are some days(we’ve all had ‘em) when you just want to eat awful chinese food. And by «awful,» I mean GREAT. Greasy, over-soy-sauced, deliciously terrible Chinese food that has absolutely no false pretensions. I have a healthy respect for Lichee Nut. They prepare quality chinese food, if that can be said. But China Hong is the place I go when I want to fulfill that sinister desire to be bad to myself. Best bad Chinese food in the area, if you take my meaning. ;)

Your average Chinese takeout place, China Hong features the standard interior design: a few bare tables, a counter, and blowup photographs of various entrees. I see China Hong every time I get off the Bergen subway stop, and tonight I decided to try it. My order? A scallion pancake and a small cashew chicken. Total price around $ 7. Having just finished eating, I can tell you that the food is fine. It wasn’t the best scallion pancake I’ve ever had, but the chicken dish was good. Totally what you’d expect from your run-of-the-mill Chinese takeout joint. Nothing more, nothing less.
