History

Established in 1985.

Last week, a mysterious «City Subs» sign appeared in a vacant Park Slope storefront, leading many to believe that the beloved City Sub — singular — might soon reopen. It turns out, that is the case — sort of. The sign was posted by co-​owner Thomas Moran, the last remaining employee of the original City Sub, who will open the new shop at 82 Fifth Avenue. (He’s aiming to be open by the end of August.) Grub caught up with Moran to talk about how he came to take over the shop, why the original went under, and what’s up with the slightly different name.

Great local sub shop. Really glad they reopened after moving recently. Subs are quite large and tasty. Place is a little disorganized and lines can be crazy long, but for basic subs, they can’t be beat.

My friends and I were waiting for a table at Miriam, and were completely famished. Lo and behold, their favorite neighborhood sandwich spot had conveniently relocated adjacent to Miriam and we were left with no choice but to get a sandwich to mitigate our hunger.
The three of us shared the glorious #13, «Baltic Street Peppermill,» which has turkey breast, and Monterey Jack cheese with lettuce, tomato + mayo. Oh and the bread was toasted. The sandwich was so, so, so good. The proportions were on point — just the right amount of meat + cheese to bread ratio. The sandwich ran us around $ 10 bucks.
They have an expansive menu, the space is small, and it’s a little disorganized. Good pre-​meal meal.

I was sad to see City Sub had closed their shop on Bergen Street. So when City Sub“S” was getting built, it was hallelujah!
The sandwiches are great! I usually get #14 toasted with the works. So you pick your sandwich. It comes on a freshly baked Italian bread and what separates this place from other places is the bread. And however they do it, they know the right proportion of meat and cheese for the sandwich. You also can have an assortment of condiments (mayo, a choice of a variety of mustards, horseradish, vegetables like lettuce, tomatoes, etc.)
Pretty much most sandwiches are $ 10 or less. Do NOT come here during lunch hour rush. The line is out the door and around the corner. If you want fast food speed, this is NOT the place for you.
NOTE: They are on Seamless/​GrubHub but the online ordering shuts down at 4pm but they are open until 7pm on most days UNLESS they run out of bread — whichever comes first.
The people who work here are friendly. I removed a star because while they are attentive to their customers, they could use more hands on deck to help move the line a little more quicker.
Other than that, I try to come here as often as I can but since I cannot get a sandwich at my preferred time (lunch time).

I had the #4 pastrami with Muenster instead of provolone. All in all a good sandwich. Definitely not as good as the major places like Katz or The Hat (in LA), but it will satisfy your taste for a pastrami if you can’t get to one of the Greats. Don’t get me wrong, the sandwich is good in its own right, but temper your expectations. I’d compare it to potbelly’s. The bread is nice and toasty yet chewy enough to not ruin the sandwich. One MAJOR issue: the wait time. It shouldn’t take nearly 30 minutes to get what equates to a fast food sub. I could get served at Katz in equal or less time. The sandwich here doesn’t justify the wait time.

I ordered the #16 «Flatbush Ave» which has corned beef and swiss. The actual sandwich was tasty. The bread was nice and crunch and the inside was melted to perfection. However I stood on this line for 40 minutes for something I could have gotten in half the time at the bodega. The space is not that big and doesn’t have air conditioning, so I began to feel lightheaded while waiting in line. Overall this place is okay, I would probably return when they are less busy.

For the love of god don’t use their app to pickup in store. I ordered, got sent a confirmation saying it will be ready at 1.55. I got there at 1.45 just to be sure. Then waited in line staring at our sandwiches going cold. Surely if an order is ready they could shout it out? Maybe send a notification? $ 20 bucks wasted of two luke warm soggy sandwiches.
Could be so much better, but they are really disorganised.
I won’t be back, and shall be asking for a refund.

I’ll tell you what, I respect a shop that shoots from the hip. And that is what City Subs does. They have quality meats and cheeses, chips, nice bread, sodas. And they are all SOLID and the subs are HUGE and CHEAP. Made me feel like I was back in Astoria at Sal Chris’s Deli. It is a GREAT stop for a sub.

Amazing sandwiches on the go with the best meat selection and yummy fresh baguette on which all their sandwiches are made. This place is so amazing that when they run out of fresh bread they close down and will not taint their taste and quality by using stale or day old ingredients!!!

This place is sooooo dadgum good. Their bread is so fresh, all deli meats and cheeses are sliced fresh to order, paper-​thin. Your whole sandwich will be on half a loaf of bread and you’ll swear it’s a lot of food and lord have mercy, how will you EVER finish that whole thing, but before you know it, you’ve blacked out and eaten not only your entire sandwich but are stealing bites of your boyfriend’s.
#20 with hot peppers and all the trimmings is the way to go. Thank me later.
Gripes: sometimes there’s a line out the door and it’s slow as molasses, but patience is a virtue (or so they say). Also, there are 4 stools and not a lot of space to eat, so this is a to-​go situation.
They have Boylan sodas but their Coke/​Diet Coke is in those miniature glasses bottles, and I just need way more Diet Coke than that.

I cant tell you how happy I am that the partners reopened this place. More or less the same as it ever was. Same fresh taste in a new building. My only complaint would be that I can eat more of it because they dont deliver. But Its probably better off anyways…

I’ve been here 2 x. The subs are amazing. Staff was fast and informative. Even if there are a couple ppl in front, you get your order quick — obviously staff are trained well and good at what they do. Decades ago I worked at restaurants so speed and staff acting professional goes a long way with me. I’m critical. But all I can say about this place is — I love it!

Super glad City Sub was resurrected (in some form). Every bit as tasty as the original in a «nicer”/updated space, though lacking the old school charm of its predecessor. My only complaint is they could stand to dial up the effort a bit with regard to efficiency. The couple times I’ve been here everyone was just kind of milling about in a semi confused fashion not sure who was in line to order and who was waiting to pick up and pay. An «order here» sign might go a long way. Definitely on the slow end of the fast food spectrum, but a good spot overall.

There is just something special about this gem. I am usually very skeptical (like everyone other New Yorker), but after the first sandwich, I was HOOKED! My tastebuds have not been the same and I feel the need to return back every chance I get! I love this place and the service is first class!!! This will be a franchise soon for sure!

I remember when City Sub was located on Bergan between 5th and Flatbush, I would crave a sandwich. I tried to go after lunch hour rush or before because the line was so long, but sure worth the wait.
One day when I was visiting Brooklyn, I wanted a sub sandwich so bad, but there was no City Sub. At first I thought they closed for that day, but then q friend told me they closed for good. I was so not happy. Lol.
After a couple of years passed, guess what City Sub has reopened and has a new location, whish is now a block or two from the old one. I went and brought sandwiches for me and my cousins. I ordered over the phoned and went and picked them up. I was in sandwich heaven. Lol. The staff was super friendly and the service was awesome.
I’ll be back. Lol.

Let’s see, I grew up in Brooklyn, I know what a good hero is, I also know what good Italian bread is, there was always the debate over caputos & mazzolas, since I spent most of my childhood on union street, mazzolas was always the best. We had mazzola Italian bread on everything, egg & potato sandwiches, with just butter, and of course with cold cuts, always boars head. I’ve always said… anything you put on mazzolas bread is going to be good! So with that said, the sandwiches here are the basically the same exact sandwiches I grew up eating, and still make in my home today. It wasn’t anything that I would say that blew my mind, yes it’s cool that I don’t have to go to mazzolas and get bread, and it’s cool that I don’t have to go to the supermarket to get the cold cuts, but overall it might have actually been cheaper if I did both those things, at almost $ 10 a sandwich I didn’t think it was worth it. I would like to also say how disappointed I was to see that they don’t make the great Italian sandwich! How could you possible have a sandwich shop without the classic? Yes they had the cold cuts to make it, but on other sandwiches, did I really want to get specific with my hero while there are 15 people behind me? Not really…
The wait was long ago, didn’t expect only two people working, and mainly one person slicing the cold cuts, while the other takes orders, and works the register.
Overall it’s good, but as I’ve said anything you put on mazzola bread is going to be good, want a city sub sandwich but don’t want to pay $ 10 for it? Basically get the bread yourself, some boars head cold cuts, and make it yourself, I guarantee it will taste exactly the same.

After Bierkraft closed down, there was a void left in my life. Not because I liked craft beer at all (or any beer, period, for that matter), but because they made the best damned sandwich in all of Brooklyn.
I thought and prayed and hoped that City Sub would be the replacement, but sadly, it is not. It’s a decent sandwich place. Small operation, no frills, good bread, nice folks, but I waited almost 30 minutes for a sandwich when there were only 4 people in line ahead of me. I felt like I entered a time vortex.
In the end, I didn’t think it was anything to write home about. Definitely better than say a Subway or Potbelly, but it’s no Bierkraft substitute.
Bierkraft personnel, if you’re out there, and you’re reading this, please, for the love of all that is food, bring back your sandwiches. I don’t need the beer, just the sandwich.

I was so excited for city subs to reopen. I’d been missing it so much!
So first I went to the website and saw that could order online. They had me download an app and I spent 10 minutes ordering on the app and then when I tried to order the app said that it wasn’t available. Why launch an app when it doesn’t work for their only location.
I called them and said I wanted to order 10 sandwiches, could I get them picked up in an hour (the app had that as an option) they said absolutely not, and when I asked when it would it be ready they couldn’t even give me an estimate.
So then I asked if I could order over the phone. They said only if I could give them numbers ie not only could i not make up my own sandwiches I couldn’t even describe the sandwiches as they were on the menu, I had to know what the number was. I said I couldn’t bc I was on the phone and so I couldn’t look at the menu. I asked if I was supposed to have the numbers memorized, because they only opened 2 weeks ago. He responded «actually sweetie we opened three weeks ago» oh as if that means I should know all the numbers off the top of my head.
I asked him to hold so I could load the menu on another phone so i could get the numbers and he hung up on me.
I was so sad bc the old city sub was so amazing and everyone was so nice but I’ll never go to where this asshole works. It isn’t hard to get a good sandwich in Brooklyn.

I loved the original place and am happy to have this version open. Understand that while this review is not complimentary, I do intend to be back again when they’ve settled in, and I want them to succeed.
If you remember the former City Sub then you know it’s all about the bread, freshly cut meats, and great simple toppings. I can say that while the bread looks the same it is now larger and denser and neither aspect helps. The meat seems the same; boar’s head, thinly sliced, so that’s good.
The real downfall is the toppings. The thin lettuce, always the one thing that elevated sandwiches to the next level before, is now wet and unappetizing. All of the toppings seem to lean this way now — totally watering down the sandwich.
Also, the limited counter space and rookie staff lead to very long wait times. At first I thought the lines out the door were solely due to an excited clientele or people flocking to the latest Gothamist article or the like. But now I know it’s really just the slow execution. Mind you, the original place was never fast, but it’s a new level now.

Bread needs work still
Wet toppings
And I hope they fix the above and absolutely kill it!

Definitely dream about their sandwiches… night and day. Doesn’t matter how long the wait is. I plan my day around their subs. Best best best in Park Slope. Whatever you crave, you’ll get it there, and you get the best.

Good subs! Had it for lunch one day, and I had to come back the next day for another sub.
The Subs at City Subs are everything you want and expect in a good sub, good bread, freshly sliced cold cuts.
They slice their cold cuts to order, each and every time. Sliced thin, perfect each and every time. They use only premium cold cuts as well.
They have a huge menu of sandwiches to choose from, you can personalize any sandwich on the menu or create your own as well. I like my sandwiches with olive oil and vinegar on the lettuce & tomato. Their sandwiches are reasonably priced as well.
I can’t wait until they start delivery service, I’m a lazy bum what can I say, sometimes all you want is a good sandwich delivered to your house and some good ol’ Netflix.
I wish they didn’t close so early, I get hungry around 9pm lol.
I recommend city subs.

Best sandwich, but most INEFFICIENT staff EVER! Don’t go during lunch because the wait is going to be crazy. It’s going to be over 30 minutes. It’s ridiculous… why are there only 2 people making sandwiches and ringing people up at the same time when the line is out the door? Every single time a sandwich is ordered, the guy making the sandwich has to open the fridge, get the block of meat, thinly slice the meat, wrap the meat back up, and put it in the fridge. This guy is also warming up all the breads too! The sandwich making process is so ridiculously inefficient. There needs to be some sort of assembly line. It’s ridiculous how much time goes into making one sandwich.
Make sure you block out an hour of your time to come here. As good as the sandwich is, the wait is horrendous. You standing in line watching the inefficiency just makes you angry.

Yes, it’s back. But so incredibly inefficient that you can expect to wait over an hour on the weekend. For a sandwich.
We waited 1.5 hours (!!!) and while their stuff is good, is it really worth that kind of wait? They are much more disorganized than before too — the cashier literally scribbles your order on a piece of paper and immediately forgets whether you want it hot and toasted or not and asks every. Single. Person. (Pro-​tip: anyone who doesn’t get it hot and toasted is a monster). How about like recording orders in a normal, legible way? The real bottleneck is that each meat and cheese is sliced individually for each sandwich and since they only have one slicer, it really slows down the process.
I anticipate that after the initial craze dies down and the temps drop, the wait should be reduced a bit, but the store can only fit around 7 people inside and then you have to wait in line outside. Bundle up!

I didn’t think this day would ever come. I’d check the internet every once in awhile, but found only silence… rumors…Hope started to fade. Hope is a very dangerous thing. Hope can destroy you if you let it.
And then… suddenly…there it was. Like a shining beacon on a hill. City Sub. With a brand new «s». The excellent submarine sandwich shop of my dreams. As is so rare in this life, my dreams… they were coming true.
Still working out the kinks. I’m pretty sure the health department was actively inspecting the place as I got my sandwich. But it’s the same old City Sub, er, Subs.

Is this really the re-​opened City Sub? Hell yes it is.
From a GrubStreet article on 10÷20÷15: «New co-​owner Thomas Moran, [is] a ten-​year veteran of the original store … The beloved shop [is] the one you know and love — just in a new location. Moran says there will be a few adjustments and improvements, but is otherwise taking a ‘if it ain’t broke …’ approach. To wit, the sandwiches will all cost under $ 10, and though they’re all named after local streets now, there will still be the classic combinations.»
I miss the actual seating — the new location is narrower and has only a counter for eat-​in — but even so, the long, lonely, City-​Sub-​less days are over. Hallelujah, hot and toasted.
