History

Established in 2008.

Contraposto Art Studio was founded in 2008 by Patricia Arnillas, the former co-​director of Art Space NYC. Contraposto specializes in decorative wall treatments including Venetian Plaster, glazing, gilding, murals, custom-​design, and hand-​printed wallpaper. An Italian Renaissance term, Contraposto refers to balance achieved through the forces of tension and grace in a human standing figure. These same dynamic elements: of tradition and innovation, measure and creativity, are the driving forces behind the firm’s vision.

Contraposto’s work blends contemporary design with classical expression. The studio prides itself on technical expertise, manipulation of color, and innovative use of raw materials. Patricia works intimately with clients to ensure that their unique vision and concepts are executed according to the highest standards of excellence.

Contraposto employs highly skilled artists, carefully selected for each project, to ensure efficient production and high quality results.

Contraposto’s founder, Peruvian born artist Patricia Arnillas, begin her career as a fine artist exhibiting her art work in South America and later in NYC where she now resides. During the early 90’s Patricia discovered the world of interior design and decorative painting. Her training in fine arts allowed her to easily navigate the world of commercial and fine arts materials that are an essential part of creating innovative finishes. Patricia co-​founded the decorative painting firm Art Space NYC in 1998. After many successful years directing the creation of murals, wall finishes, and decorative textures for the interiors of stores, hotels, and high-​end residences in the US and in Europe, Patricia went on to found Contraposto Art Studio, a decorative painting firm based in Brooklyn NY. Contraposto counts among its clients many of the best regarded interior design firms in NY such as Robert AM Stern Architects and Stephen Sills Associates.
