Worth IT! I don’t write Unilocal reviews often but wanted to make known the good work Luvly does with hair.
As a girl who grew up thinking braids should always take 5+ hours, I was wowed by her technique and ability to do my whole head (medium length and thickness) in just a little over three hours. like, in what black girl magic hair world is that even a thing?!
She was super understanding of my last minute appointment and squeezed me in on a Thursday afternoon. I felt listened to throughout the styling process and was happy to have found her & her skills.
I hope to go back to Luvly again!
TL;DR: If you don’t mind the trip to crown heights, call/​text her for an appointment and go for itttt.

She’s is good at what she does. After having my hair installed I developed a bad reaction.
I was happy when I left. But sad that my hair and my skin messed up. She does care about the well being of her client.
Personally I wouldn’t do the style again

The pictures say it all… I had to take my Marley Twist out after a few days because my real hair was out of the twist — I don’t understand how a stylist can do such a horrible job ! MARLEY TWIST ARE CALLED A PROTECTIVE STYLE BECAUSE THEY SHOULD PROTECT YOUR HAIR UNDERNEATH BUT THAT’S NOT WHAT I GOT. Plus the Marley twist were uneven — not slightly but vastly uneven and for that I will not be coming back.
Service was also bad…
I went to Luvly’s house because she was transitoning to a new salon. While doing my hair she had very unprofessional conversations, she spoke about topics like her 3 time arrest for fighting, one night stands, hatred for her prior boss, basically no topic was off limits. She also spent a lot of time procrastinating by: constantly going over and looking out her window, having her best friend come over, roomate coming in the room, very random unprofessional stuff. My hair took 4 hours instead of 3. On top of that she braided extremly tight with no sympathy. When getting your hair done, as a customer you want to get in and out, because your paying for the service but in the end it cost me extra time and money to take down my hair, rewash it, find and pay another stylist on short notice plus buy more hair all of which is not cheap. No, I dont not want this service to be redone. I got it done Oct 29^th, told Luvly the next day about my hair plus sent her pictures (my screenshots show it all) — (she said she was on vacation and would fix my hair Nov 3^rd and contact me Nov 2^nd to set that up, she did not.) I reached out to Luvly Nov 4, got no response, I then called and spoke to her assistant on the phone that same day and told her that my hair was coming out and my twist were uneven, after I got no followup or concern from Luvly. Multiple people can account for my poorly done hair, customer service is everything in this business !
Lesson: Dont waste your time.

First off, I’m satisfied with how my hair came out. My twist are neat and they aren’t heavy. Now for the service, I waited longer for her to start my hair then it actually took for her to do my hair. Once she started my hair she kept repeating «I’m tired, I’m tired» several times over my head. It made me feel uncomfortable like she didn’t want to do my hair. I would have preferred her to give me another appointment than to have me wait that long then complain. She requested that I buy 10packs of the recommended batik brand. She did 29 medium/​large mid back length twist and it doesn’t feel like I used 10 packs of hair.

Disaster, a down right disaster, my hair was pulled tightly, she is VERY VERY disrespectful, like seriously has complete lack of manners for her customers, if you love your hair (especially if your a woman with thick hair, DO NOT EVEN TRY IT, you’ll regret it, because she will pull **tightly** on your hair and your ingrown hair**) like even 2 days after the hair was taken out, my scalp was still super tender. I paid her $ 125 and paid $ 64 for the cuban twist hair, ended up taking the hair out the next day, she told me I would get a refund and now her «assistant» (I believe) says that I can’t get a refund, (keep in mind, before she started my hair I told her I was tender headed and not to do my hair tightly, and she continued to pull tightly on my hair). While I was also getting my hair done she kept pushing and pulling on me to keep my head straight (as if I were her child, not a way to treat a customer) if you value a respectful hairstylist and for them to respect what you specifically tell them not to do, DO NOT GET YOUR HAIR DONE HERE. Truthfully she lacks respect and simple human decency. Then they both decided I should get $ 50 back OUT OF $ 125 for the hair that they didn’t do properly, so if you ass 125+64=189, so $ 189 I wasted on poor service, $ 64 of which was money for the hair, and she tells you to buy 10 packs (which I saw bundles of hair in her lower cabinet that she keeps, I guess she makes you buy a lot so she has some left over for her personal use). I am just really pissed that I wasted my money, time and effort. Terrible, ladies all jokes aside, beware, if you love you keep your «strands and edges» don’t think about it. Take it from an honest reviewer. The comment left below by luvly is all blasphemy, she is HIGHLY disrespectful and she is posing a COMPLETELY false story, this is the same woman who begged me to remove my review from Unilocal and I refused, she said for the «sake» of her business, but I can post as I please, she is high disrespectful, and if you don’t believe me read the other comments from former reviewers about her attitude there is like 3 or more reviewers who stated negative comments about her attitude. HER ATTITUDE WILL NOT GET HER FAR IF SHE DOES NOT FIX IT, TRUST ME, SHE IS A 30-​YEAR-​OLD woman arguing with a 21-​YEAR-​OLD, now tell me who looks more stupid… act your age luvly, your rude and you need to check your attitude because it can seriously destroy your business.

I went to see Luvly Brown earlier this week for Marley twists. Let me say, I have received so many compliments already! I was really happy with the quality of work and the speed with which Luvly worked. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is because I had to wait a while before she started on me due to running late with another client. However, she was very apologetic and she got my out the chair in the same amount of time it would’ve taken if she started on time. Also the shop has a cool vibe so it’s nice to wait in. I will def be back for more twists, or maybe even faux lox as the girl she did before me got them and they looked great. Thanks Luvly!

This review is based on her customer service and booking.
I tried booking an appointment for 3 months (I guess I’m a glutton for punishment) on June for August 1^st. With the inclusion of her and her assistant, I was booked, cancelled, moved back, booked again, and finally cancelled again.
I’ve screen shot all the correspondences starting in May. Very unprofessional. She missed an opportunity for valuable customers.
Her long comment proves my point. Btw, I have 2 text messages where I sent her assistant my email.

Went to Luvly for the third time this past Monday and as always I am so HAPPY with my hair! Luvly is amazing! I have gotten so many compliments on my twists. Thank you again Luvly!

2 things you should know. 1. I’m a homebody and 2 I hate doing my hair! When I get the nerve to finally do it, I do it myself. In need of a break from the routine of braidouts/​twistouts and daily maintenance, tell me why I found myself in the butt crack of Harlem (I’m from Brooklyn) ’cause she’s that damn good. The pictures on insta speaks for itself. I’m really glad that I can have less anxiety about my hair and be sure that my hair will turn out great at a minimum. Plus, not only is she professional she’s super cool too. I normally don’t like talking but our talks were pleasant and REAL lol. I usually complain about tightness, but that wasn’t the case here either. And the time spent wasn’t bad either. I’m used to spending all day (literally) in a chair in dirty sweatbox with 2 rude African ladies in my head. So this experience was refreshing and relatively easy.
A few things took away from the experience but here are a few tips to make things run smoothly for you and the o so Ms. Luvly Brown!
1. Although it’s not mentioned and maybe she does offer these services but I would suggest you wash and blow out your hair before your arrival.
2. Bring a sweater, that AC is good during this weather but it’s cold lol
3. You should also be aware that although Style Seat (the online booking service she uses) offers to save your credit/​debit card for payment, it’s CASH ONLY :/​
* I’ve gotten so used to going to places that offer this that I didn’t double check to confirm this, so I had to walk 11 blocks to get cash and avoid my nasty bank fees. But I think this added convenience for clients would increase business. I’m surprised she doesn’t have a square card.
3. She has a list of suggested hair brands to buy from but if you want the best value for your money get Batik Reggae hair. She makes the hair I bought work, but I can tell she didn’t like it (although it was suggested on her list). But I totally agree that Batik is wayy better!
*Batik hair is fuller, softer and reusable!
4. If you still somehow someway still end up getting something other than batik. get an extra pack or 2 for assurance. she suggests nine. but I needed 11. So I had to walk 7 blocks to go the beauty supply store nearby. So in total expect to spend 45 – 55 bucks for hair.
5. if you’re not from Harlem and you’re thinking about buying the hair from your local shop (I went to the one she suggested in Brooklyn), don’t bother and save yourself a few bucks. In Brooklyn, the Batik hair costs more and the doesn’t have much variety. Maybe I didn’t luck out but I suggest the beauty shop near her shop. It’s on:
125^th between 7^th and 8^th next to Dr. Jay Ladies and across from the Apollo theater.
Not only does it cost less, that shop has wayy more variety in color and 2 lengths. (18 & 24 inches)
So other than my little workout (my trip to the beauty store and bank) Ms. Luvlys work was A plus and she was cool people! I would definitely recommend her to my friends and see her again and again.

I went in to have my Marley Twist done by Luvly Brown and I must say I had a BAD EXPERIENCE. She was an hour late, came in with an attitude offered no apology and this was my first time coming to her so right there I was a little on edge. My main concern was her twisting technique my scalp was in so much pain from her twisting so tight and I asked that she go a little easier but to no avail. That night I noticed bumps and dry blood on my scalp. She was really ruff with my head and trying to position it to whatever angle she was trying to get. Her attitude was really bad and I was happy when I was walking out. I would never go to her again.
In reply to Luvly Brown’s response, yes we did move to the back of the salon because I was uncomfortable sitting in the front being that it was so crowded and I thanked you for that which was why I tipped extra. Yes I did have to cut my hair extra and we did a consultation before starting anything and you said to me no worries it’s not as bad as it looks and that you would be able to grip my hair just fine you never indicated that it would cause severe pain. In the chair I mentioned to you that it was hurting thinking that you would go a little easier but you didn’t. Your Vibe was so negative that I just had to suck it up and take it so I can hurry up and get out if there. Even if your saying you had to do it extra tight because of the length of my hair what was the cause of all the shoving and pulling of my head? As for my child goes Luvly, your booking page shows that you do children’s hair I even booked an appointment with you to do both my daughters hair (before I had my experience with you) but since then I have clearly learned you have 0 tolerance for children. My daughter is 6 years old school is out for the summer and so yes as a parent I had to bring her with me that day. My daughter was not your child to deal with she’s mine and all she was doing (AND PLEASE CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG) was coming to ask me questions and sometimes sitting in my lap. My child was NOT touching anything in the shop, touching anything of yours, jumping around on chairs nor running around none of the above she was coming straight to me and if she wasn’t with me she was sitting down playing with my phone so I guess I’m a little confused about your disrespectful comment about «my inability to control my child.» If you can’t deal with a child walking to a parent how are you going to deal with a child who’s sitting in your chair getting their hair done and they are twisting and turning because they getting restless? When my child would walk up to me I would tell her go sit back down simply because I clearly seen your frustration and I was trying to make you comfortable. Seeing you frustrated was making me frustrated and that’s not counting the pain I was in. I have been in hair salons with my daughter and have never had the problem with her and the stylist that you seem to personally have had. My stylist has conversations with her, gives her lollipops unfortunately she moved out of state so I had to find somewhere new, but again as I did that day I do apologize that my daughter seemed to have bothered you so much and thank you for doing my hair. Hello Luvly, I’m surely not going to have a debate with you over a 6 year old if you want to say my daughter was running and skipping all around the shop hey be my guest you win! You are surely correct my child was totally misbehaving but I’m not the one being judged on Unilocal,you are, therefore I have nothing to prove, nothing to gain, or nothing to lose I was just giving my honest opinion and review that’s all, and you have a lot of good reviews and a few bad ones so I don’t think my review is really going to harm you, but I truly again want to apologize about the rude behavior of my 6 year old and she apologizes as well. Omg I loooooooove luvelys work! I got some Marley twist done yesterday for the first time and I’m absolutely in love with them! The vibe of the shop is so cool you feel very welcomed & comfortable! Luvely is sweet and cool as ever. She takes her time to achieve the look u want to perfection. I absolutely recommend her to anyone who wants this natural beautiful look

Sadly I must say I did not have the best experience with Ms. Luvly Brown. I went to her shop a few months back to get Marley twists. I booked my appointment months in advance, when she was working in Brooklyn. Two weeks before my appointment, I messaged her on Style Seat asking her what would be the best hair for me to get because I have fine, curly hair and she had a list of different hair brands that her clients could buy. I also asked if I should pre-​soak the hair, and if I should blow dry my hair before seeing her. I did not receive a response, so I also emailed her. Still, no response. That was the first red flag.
About a month before my appointment I noticed that she moved to Harlem to work. Finally, her assistant calls me to confirm my appointment a week before. I proceeded to ask my questions again and mentioned that I emailed and messaged Luvly. Her assistant tells me that she will get back to me. She does, only texting me that I would need 9 packs of batik reggae hair, which I thought was a bit much since my hair isn’t thick, but since she is the stylist, I followed direction.
The day before my appointment I receive a message from her assistant asking that I come in for my appointment at 10 am instead of 8 am (the original time scheduled) since the new shop does not open until 10 am. I said, sure, no problem. I get there, came about 10 minutes late myself, but on my way there, I get a text message from her telling me that she’s running a bit late. She calls me stating that she had some problems with her landlord, and she will give me a complimentary session for a touch up. I’m still polite, don’t mind because I just know that she will hook my hair up, right? Finally she gets there an hour after me. Anyway, things started out okay, but I felt that she was twisting a bit tightly. I did mention that to her and asked her to be easy on me since I’m a bit «tender headed.» She went out and asked if I wanted something from the store which was nice. It was still okay until her next customer came in. Once she came, she painfully twisted my hair, as if rushing to get me out. My scalp was in sooooooo much pain, and she was pulling my strands from the root very hard. I asked her if she could be gentler, she said she has to twist it in tighter otherwise the twists won’t stay in. I should have left once that happened, and paid for what was already done. She also moved and grabbed my head a lot, I guess I did not position it the way she wanted me to, but I did not know what she wanted from me. I also asked that she leave out my edges, thinking she would gel the sides. Instead, she put all of my fine fragile edges in the twist. The twists in the front were significantly bigger than the back and she used two pieces of Marley hair to a small ¾″ section of my hair. Then at the end, she clearly had an attitude, which I did not understand. She would ask me to get up (small space in busy shop) several times, and when I stayed standing, she rudely stated that I could sit back down. She also roughly shoved me back toward the seat a couple of times (I cannot make this stuff up). Lastly, she used the hot water far up my hair, even where my hair was. I was happy to leave, but I left with my scalp very tender and in pain.
The hair was very heavy on my head. I literally kept it in overnight, and took the hair out the next morning, because I was miserable and in too much pain to walk around in it. Plus, I could not properly put my glasses on, the hair was in the way (I had on contacts when I went to see her). I also had a couple of sores/​bumps on my scalp after taking it out. Perhaps Luvly was having a really off day, and I feel that if she had more time to work on my hair, the style would have came out the way I wanted. However, if you are a bit particular on the care and treatment of your hair, I would tread carefully.

I got my hair done by Luvly on March 11^th and my twists held up through a trip to Kenya which involved the safari, water, heat, wind and just about everything you could imagine! 3.5 weeks later I took them out because I was missing my curls, but the Marley twists still looked great. Luvly is an expert at her job. Her installation was super fast and not painful at all. I plan to get Marley twists again in the very near future and Luvly is the only person I will call to do my hair!

Since September 2014 I have been coming to Luvly regularly as I was transitioning from an undercut. Thanks to her, I credit this new 5 inches of hair growth to her care and maintenance tips. My hair is healthier than ever, and the twists are always very well done.
Whether I was late for an appointment, or I’m her last client of the day, Luvly has always given me the most professional customer care + a beautiful personality, a combination that’s truly rare nowadays.
As previous reviews say, be prepared to be a walking advertisement!

This woman is a hair magician!!! Not only was she able to twist my texture of hair, she made it look amazing. I showed her a pic of what I wanted and within a few hours, she had perfectly duplicated the look on my head. Her and her assistant are such sweethearts with big personalities, there was never a point where I felt less than totally welcome. Thank you, Luvly!

Pros: Ms. Luvly:
1. is a talented hair designer;
2. has a professional demeanor;
3. made me feel pretty relaxed while doing my hair;
4. worked quickly and competently while doing my hair;
5. has truly competitive pricing;
6. also has a great assistant who is polite, efficient, and is trying her best to maintain the busy schedule.
Cons:
1. The actual shop could use some sprucing up. The location is fine, but the appearance of the shop doesn’t reflect the talent that Ms. Luvly clearly has.
2. While I am satisfied with the style of my hair, I am not satisfied with the texture of the hair itself which Ms. Luvly instructed me to purchase. In advance of the appointment, I submitted a picture of the style that I wanted where I previously had Havana Twists done with much softer hair (and this is clear from the picture). She instructed me to purchase Reggae Batik hair which, unbeknownst to me, turned out to be quite course and is not easy to sleep on (in my personal opinion). Also, despite some resistance from me, she installed them somewhat tightly, which isn’t great especially around the edges.
3. She was an hour late to the appointment, for which she generously apologized and discounted the service. While I think this was a great gesture, it’s still important to be on time for appointments.
Overall: I would recommend Ms. Luvly because she’s a talented hairdresser who is clearly on trend when it comes to natural hair styling. I can see that previous reviews are well-​deserved, despite my own experience. Nevertheless, anyone who goes to Ms. Luvly won’t be disappointed as she’ll deliver a great hairstyle that is done quickly and astutely.

Awesome service! Luvly was very professional, fast and so friendly! She was also very knowledgeable about hair care and was able to answer my questions.

I’ve gone to Luvly twice so far. Each experience exceeded my expectations. The first time I got Havana twist. She did them perfectly. I was a bit concerned that it would be done tight around my edges since they are shot, but that was not the case at all. There was no pulling what so ever. About a month later I went back for a touch up. She did a great job cleaning my scalp and re twisting several of my twist. Luvly provides such great service and has a great personality. I truly wish there were more caring and knowledgeable hair stylist like her.
I will be back next month to try Marley twist.

Two days ago I sat in Luvly’s chair and was amazed from beginning to end. Not only was she super fast, she was efficient. I must say however, maybe, just maybe, her skill isn’t the most important thing. It’s not just about «the hair» with her. She’s a beautiful soul and gives off a great vibe from the moment you meet her!
This was my first time getting any type of extensions ever! I felt comfortable and confident before I even sat in her chair as she was finishing up another customers twists when I walked in. I was able to see her work her magic.
I got Havana twists with a hint of purple highlights in the back. She did my hair perfectly, everything I asked for, from the size of the twists and how I wanted the purple hair to fall in the back. The parts are neat and evenly spaced. I will definitely be a returning customer.

Luvly Brown was amazing from the minute I stepped through the door down to the second that I left.
I had never had any kind of protective style in my hair. Luvly took the time to talk to me about all of my concerns. She knew exactly what I wanted before I even did. She was amazing!!! Let me say it is so Hard to find the whole package these days. Knowledgeable Skilled Humble and Terrific Customer Service!!! Luvlys got all of it. 2thumbs up 10’s across the board! I’m so happy with my invisible root Marley twist! it’s gorgeous! Exactly what I wanted!!! Happy customer!!! I will def be spreading the word!!!

So this was my first time ever getting any type of protective hairstyle done on my hair since I’ve been natural. At first I was skeptical about getting Havana Twists because I wasn’t sure how I would look with it, but I must say I am VERY HAPPY with the outcome. Luvly Brown was absolutely amazing and was so sweet. She took her time on my hair and the final results was exquisite. I had many questions and concerns and she answered them and had patience. I will definitely recommend her to anyone whose looking to get Havana Twists or even Marley Braids. I definitely will be back for my root touch up in a couple of months. Thanks Luvly Brown!!!
