I went in with a toothache, wanted to learn if it was a cavity, then fill it if so. Mr. Sheps tried to sell me extraneous services that I did not need. Uncomfortable.
Two years later, the filling falls out. I return to ask for a repair. The woman in a lab coat at the front desk reflexively tries blaming me — «it was probably some other dentist knocked it out, you probably did it, how do we know we put in that filling», and that two years had passed, so…
I was shocked that the office would not stand by the dentist’s work! I literally walked across the street and went to a competent dentist.

Ever since I was a child, I detested the dentist. I hated having metal shit shoved in my mouth. However, once I became an adult, I realized that you sometimes have to do things you don’t want to do.
My teeth are crooked and I need braces. An extra tooth that was parallel to my lower front tooth prevented me from getting braces (I’m still trying to figure out how I got an extra tooth. Maybe I’m a mutant). With that in mind, the tooth needed to be extracted.
After I searched Google for an inexpensive extraction, I found this place. The extraction cost $ 200, which is a reasonable price (one place charged $ 600). The train took (F)orever to get to the office, but they didn’t get mad at me when I came 15 minutes late. There are a plethora of magazines, but I didn’t even have time to read them. Right after I filled out the medical paperwork, they took me to the back (I was secretly hoping that they would make me wait 15 minutes since I like Time Out New York).
The assistant put that weird contraption that you bite on in my mouth. She then took an x-​ray. The dentist applied Novocaine to my gums (they should make a Novocaine-​flavored yogurt). I thought the dentist would use some high tech laser to extract my teeth. Instead, he used this metal device to literally twist the tooth out of the socket. I thought dentists had better technology than that in the year 2013. On a 10 scale, the pain was a 5 (minus 1 star). Fortunately, the process only lasted 90 seconds. In fact, the entire visit took only 45 minutes.

I chose Dr. Sheps when I first moved to Kensington in ’10, and based my choice solely on the other positive Unilocal reviews. Having gone to him twice for cleanings and today for two replacement fillings, I feel he deserves another great review. His dental hygienist Marie is efficient, kind, and genuinely interested in helping you understand whatever you may have questions about. So is Dr. Sheps, and he takes pride in careful work and a job well done. He didn’t let me leave without making sure my new filling was 100% comfortable. I may not stay in Kensington forever, but as long as I’m a New Yorker I’ll go back to Dr. Sheps for dental care.

I’ve been to see Dr. Sheps three times now, and he’s one of the best dentists I’ve ever had. I like going to the dentist: I love my teeth, and I want to keep them for 40 more years! That doesn’t mean there’s never anything wrong, though. I’ve had the occasional filling, even a crown (when a 20 y.o. filling broke), so there’s been pain. Plus I have a small mouth, so x-​rays ALWAYS hurt. But Dr. Sheps and his assistants do their best to minimize any pain (successfully for me), plus they’re incredibly hygienic, friendly, and competent. They’re pretty high-​tech, too, more so than I expected in a little office in Kensington. Appointments are convenient, and neither I nor my husband has ever had to wait for long. Extra bonus: these people have a sense of humor and are good conversationalists. This can sometimes be a problem though; last time he almost made me snort with laughter while he had the suction thingy and gauze in my mouth. We’ve always had insurance, meaning we’ve never had to pay a cent, so I can’t speak much to the costs, but what I’ve read in reviews here sounds about right for NYC dentistry. Sorry, $ 160 person, but maybe you didn’t ask the right questions beforehand?

A disappointing appointment. I went there because i’ve read the reviews on Unilocal,and it was kinda close to where I live. And now I’m wondering: guys, are we talking about the same place?!? Let’s check… Oh yes! We are! So, for $ 160 i got nothing but a horrible feeling how they making money on you! When I made an appointment the receptionist didn’t tell me how much they will charge me for the first visit, after all she told me $ 120 then for some reason it became $ 160, and here I’ve read that under $ 200 somebody even got teeth cleaning and polish on their first check up, are you serious? Doctor checked my teeth within 10 min, did the x-​ray, explained me what’s gonna cost what, I’m talking about $$$$ (count the dollar symbols), so I was thinking they will offer me some sort of plan payment, or would advise me anything concerning insurance i mean any helpful info… nope… I hadn’t been offered anything, upset.

I left a message on Dr. Sheps’ answering machine the night before I had a day off from school and his receptionist called first thing the next morning. Even though they were booked for that day (probably with other teachers using their Veterans’ Day to get to the dentist), she told me that they could see me if I got there any time before noon. Everyone there was wonderful and extremely comforting. I was there for an oral cancer screening and he managed to make the process seem like it was no more troubling than your standard visit. He diagnosed what I have as something that is not malignant, but praised me for being careful and coming in. I will certainly be going back to Dr. Sheps after such a helpful and convenient visit.

Professional, compassionate, friendly. Best dentist I’ve ever had. Very affordable for those of us without dental insurance.

My brother showed up at my house with the entire left side of his face swollen. He desperately needed a root canal, had no dental insurance, and had been to a dentist in Park Slope who «didn’t want to deal with him if he wasn’t serious about getting the procedure done asap at full price». At Dr. Isidore’s, not only did he receive options (root canal or remove the tooth of which he chose the latter), he received great service and noticiably did NOT receive attitude. For under $ 300, he is fully recovered and thinking about getting dental insurance just so he can go back and get a venner, but only from this dentist. Especially in these tough economic times, we really appreciate the no fuss business run here. A+

I had a terrible tooth ache and unfortunately no dental insurance. Unilocaling for an inexpensive dentist only had Unilocal suggest «Did you mean expensive dentist?» This is not an encouraging way to start a search for a dentist.
After doing research, i was sold on Eric L’s review. I’ve never gone to a Unilocal’d location with only one review, but i am extremely happy i did.
The entire visit for me was very pleasant. The staff was courteous, friendly, and kind. The dental staff was happy to share their sense of humor to help distract me from the fate of my tooth that awaited.
I was out the door with an xray, shots, and a pulled tooth in under 25 minutes.
Everything being performed was explained to me and every option was provided. Sheps was more than happy to spend time explaining what choices i had and the reasoning behind any of his recommendations.
After my 8 years of avoiding dentists from one bad experience, i can happily say i’ve found one that made up for the trauma and relieves my worries of future dentist appointments.
Edit: $ 270 bought me a limited oral evaluation, an xray, a tooth extraction, and a whole lotta pain free days ahead. Sheps even called to followup that night to make sure everything was going okay with the extraction. Superb service.

The service here is superb. Its like going back to your hometown town dentist. You get the same comfortability you get at home. Service is super fast. I went in for a checkup and cleaning and was out within an hour. The dentist did the cleaning himself. I came back the next day for one cavity — out 45 minutes after walking in the door.
And for those of you without insurance, your first visit is just under $ 200 — for a cleaning, full x-​rays and polish. A filling is $ 125. Its a clean, sanitary place to have your teeth checked out.
Besides the inexpensive service, its right off the Church avenue stop, there is a great magazine selection while you wait (if you even have to wait), and the Dentist is a great guy. He even has weekend and evening hours. What more can you ask for?
