On recommendation from a friend of mine, I came in to get my past shoulder length wavy hair cut for the first time in over a year and a half. I’d been looking for someone who could handle hair that has a bit of a wave and some random cowlicks, but who also listened to my requests (I did come with photos of what I was looking to do with it) and boy did Cynthia ever listen. My hair looks amazing, even with my complete inability to style it as beautifully as Cynthia did and that is pretty great! Cynthia listened to what I wanted, my concerns, asked about my hair care routine in detail, especially as I henna my hair, and chatted with me about pretty much everything. I did go in on a Friday early afternoon, so it was very quiet and relaxed.
This was a great experience and I highly recommend Cynthia.

This is my first review ever! I went to Joseph Tyler on my birthday looking to do something different with my hair. I unfortunately don’t remember the name of the person who took care of me but she had short blonde hair. She asked me few questions about what I wanted and asked me to trust her. She cut my hair and put a color in it and I must say she knew exactly what I wanted when I didn’t. I’ve been getting compliments left and right and it’s so easy to manage. Cynthia is a master level hair cutter and tends to my curls with precision and attention to ALL MY requests. With curly hair, having the salon’s attention to detail and my needs can be hard to come by AND Joseph Tyler always goes above and beyond to meet them!
I also work with Sarah Thomas, who provides master level coloring services. She always listens to the client and gives her feedback ONLY when asked. I prefer asking, as sometimes I’m not sure «what’s in» and/​or is «best» for my complexion. I love her work, the quality is spot in! She’s also just a wonderful human being inside and out :-)

I’m a college student living in the area and needed to find a good salon. My hair is something I’m willing to spend some money on so if you’re looking for style on a budget this is probably not the place for you. It’s a little on the pricey side, but in my opinion it’s worth it. I see Sarah almost once a month, she’s incredibly professional and is extremely knowledgable in color mixing and styling. My best hair colors have been thanks to her expertise! She also has a knack for perfect blow outs — you tell her what you want and she’ll exceed expectations. There was ONE time where I wasn’t thrilled with my color, as it did not go on dark enough over my existing color, so Sarah asked me to come back at the next available time and re-​did my color for only a small fraction of the price. Sarah is such a sweet person and wonderful to have a conversation with — definitely makes the experience that much more enjoyable!

I was on the hunt for a salon to do a good blow out on natural hair for a long time. I have tried a few salons and thus far I have not gone back to any.
I have walked past this salon many times over the last five or so years but I never went inside since I didn’t see any naturals going in and out. I finally decided to check out on-​line reviews and saw a recent review from around October/​November 2012 noting that Cynthia does a great job with coarse, natural hair. I have fine, natural hair so I decided to give them a try.
When I walked in, a couple was purchasing some Jane Carter products (sold on site). When they were done, I was helped right away. I mentioned that I saw a review about Cynthia doing a great job with blowing out natural hair and I wanted to make an appointment. I also mentioned that my hair style was not in its natural state, it was a twist out. Lo and behold, I was speaking with Cynthia (the owner) at the time. She was available to take me within a few minutes since her next appointment was about 2 hours out.
What I first noticed is that the salon is well appointed with exposed brick and hardwood flooring. It was also very clean, mirrors gleaming and floors clear of all hair despite knowing that they do hair cuts. I also noticed the music, a nice mix of jazz and blues type music which was very relaxing.
When she was ready for me, Cynthia asked me to sit in her chair and she assessment my hair in it’s curly state (2 week old twist out) and then we went to the wash basin. I am not sure what products were used and I did not ask. Cynthia asked me about my hair care routine, what products I use and when I last had a trim. We discussed products that I own and products that I’ve considered trying. I am not sure if a conditioner was used but if it was, it was a quick rinse out instead of using a plastic cap and sitting under a hood dryer. Cynthia added Morrocan oil (sold on site) to my hair and combed it out. I never used Morrocan oil but was told it would make the comb out easier. She combed from root to tip which most natural knows cannot be done without a significant loss of hair and some pain. I explained that I do not comb my hair out that way and she asked how I comb out my hair. Although I explained my comb out process, she combed from the ends upward for only a little bit and went back to her style. It was not really rough like some salons that are not familiar with natural hair so I did let her finish.
The blow out was next, with no heat protection which would have normally freaked me out. Nonetheless, I waited to see how hot the blow dryer would be prior to getting too worried. It was not hot enough to scare me. She started at the front, not the back, such that my hair was blowing a bit too much into my face and mouth. It was kind of funny at the time although different from other salons. After the blow out, she flat ironed in tiny sections with a small iron (edges) and a full size iron for the rest of my hair. Each section was sprayed with a heat protectant prior to flat ironing. Cyntnia also gave me a trim, although I was reluctant to let her put scissors in my hair. My hair grows in a V shape and stylists always want to give me a blunt cut. I gave in and had the trim done, which was no additional charge. It was just a blunt trim at the bottom of the V shape, it was not a full trim where all sections of my hair were cut.
All in all it was a good experience and I would go back again. However, I’d probably detangle my own hair since I do think some of the hair in the comb was from the root to tip combing rather than normal tangled hair after wearing a twist out for two weeks. I would also ask for a deep conditioning treatment.
Total cost was $ 54.44 + tip. Yes, I know most people don’t tip the owner but I did anyway since I felt she did a good job and listened to me despite the few things I would do differently when doing my own hair.

I had the great fortune of scheduling a last minute cut with Sarah at Joseph Tyler Salon and I’m so thankful. Sarah is incredible — that perfect mix of talent, vision, listening well and offering so much kindness. After giving me the best cut and blow out I scheduled cuts for my husband and son, who also looked fantastic after Sarah did their hair. She also gave me highlights this month and I am in love. Thank you so much!
The Salon was also perfect — fast service, water and magazines for customers, friendly staff, great products, clean and super comfortable space. Couldn’t be happier.

I first walked in to the Joseph Tyler Salon about three years ago. New to the neighborhood, I was looking for a local salon to make my new hair care home. I had the usual trim and blow out by Sarah and was happy with the service. I contined to frequent the salon for cuts, trins and the occasional color. The only complaint I had, until recently, was that Sarah typically cut off a little more than I like and added in a few too many layers.
My last trip to Joseph Tyler in November was definitely my last! I asked for a trim, single color, highlights and blow out. With only a two minute consultation, Sarah got to work. The color was applied so messily that my face was covered in dye, which she failed to clean up. The cut added such uneven layers my ends looked completely dead. The blow out left me with FIVE burns on my forehead from the blow dryer. And all for $ 300!
Save your time, money and hair and stay away from this place!

Joseph Tyler Salon was a sleeper for me. I’ve been walking by for two years now but never went in. I’ve tried a few salons in Brooklyn and Manhattan but never been happy enough to stick to one place – for the prices I was paying I wanted to be wowed. It was until a friend (who has fantastic hair) said she got hers cut there. So I called up one Saturday to see if they had any cancellations, they did, and I was getting my too long locks chopped within an hour.
My stylist, Bahia, was amazing. Super sweet and very knowledgeable. It’s crazy but out of all the people who’ve been cutting my hair since I moved here, she was the first to really look at my face and know what would look good. I told her I wanted to take off a few inches but didn’t elaborate much. She whipped up the perfect haircut for me. The styling she gave it looked fantastic and I can almost replicate it which is another first – I’ve never been able to do that with any style, seriously. I’m practically clueless when it comes to beauty products, but she walked me through it. Bahia gave me a super manageable, adorable cut that frames my face and I get tons of compliments on. Very happy with the whole experience!

I got the best haircut of my life here! It was a little on the pricey side, but I’m a cheapskate when it comes to ‘frivolous’ expenditures. So anything beyond food is an added expense for me. The thing is, I REALLY needed a haircut. I was starting to look like Crystal Gayle.
About a week before my wedding, I saw Sarah and I told her she could be creative… just make it short and give me some layers. She was like Edward Scissorhands, using a tool I had never even seen before to blunt the ends. She was competent and proficient and I felt comfortable just letting her do her thing. The funny thing is I looked in the mirror at one point and I thought, «Oh no, did I just get a mullet?» But after she styled it, it looked fucking great!
This was back in October 2011 and I can still simply get out of the shower, comb my hair, put a little styling gel in and I’m ready to go. Basically, I’m happy with how it looks as it grows out.
The only thing that was weird was the woman at the front tried to book my next haircut as I was paying. And I tried to explain that I only get my hair cut once a year, not every six weeks like some people!
Aside from the awkward moment at the cash register, I would definitely return here and see Sarah again for my next haircut.

Recently, my loctician (hairstylist that specializes in dreadlocks) relocated to this salon. Located in Clinton Hill, the Joseph Tyler salon is located right on Myrtle Avenue and Classon.
Once you walk in, you’re greeted by the owner is absolutely adorable and stylish with her curly cut. The salon itself has a very chic yet organic feel with the dark brown and beige finishes throughout the salon. The atmosphere of the salon is one that is relaxing and inviting. Streaming Pandora throughout the day, the staff make you feel like you are in a hair oasis.
They day I came in, the salon wasn’t crowded which made it even more inviting. The other patrons and I were loving the music and the amazing washes we got. Lishl, my loctician, did an amazing job of quickly twisting and styling my long (¾’s of the way down my back) and super thick locs). The conversation with the other patrons, Lishl and the owner made the time pass so quickly that when i was done, I didn’t want to leave.
Definitely looking forward to my next trip to the Joseph Tyler salon.

I really love this salon. I have natural coarse hair yet when I leave it looks like I have a full blown relaxer. I’ve never been in the salon for more than an hour and that’s with me getting washed, blown out, trimmed, and flat ironed. Sara is always my stylist and she does an amazing job. I would have given them 5 stars but they are a little pricey especially in the age of the Dominican Salon where you can get all of the same thing done for ½ of the price.

Here’s why:
After passing the Joseph Tyler Salon for years; I finally decided to give them a try because my usual stylist was on LOA. I walked in and the very nice front desk person suggested, the stylist, Sarah to handle my African American, 3C textured and colored hair. The front desk person told me the styling techniques that would most likely be employed. I felt comfortable with her knowledge and understanding of my needs and set the appointment for the following week. (+3 for first impression and customer care)
I met with Sarah right on time for my appointment. (+2 customer care)
Spent a few moments discussing what I wanted and what she could do. She suggested «blow fry». I wanted curly finger style (my usual). (+2 for customer care)
Sarah prepared the color solution and was about to apply without putting a protective ointment around hair line. I requested it and she said «Oh yeah, I know» before getting it (did I detect a slight attitude?). Question: If you know the right way to do things, why didn’t you do it? (–2 poor customer care and improper technique)
The color was slapped on so haphazardly the stuff was, literally, flying everywhere. I had to ask her to do a mop up on «aisle forearms» several times and finally closed my eyes for fear of getting color in my eyes. (–2 neatness and safety)
My hair was washed and conditioned by her assistant/​apprentice. I asked her to just squeeze out the water because towel drying promotes frizz and the water helps with the even distribution of styling products. (+2 for good technique w/​brief scalp massage and customer care)
Back in the chair with Sarah to review styling; and she grabs a towel and starts to rub and shake my hair. (I thought I only screamed inside my head, but apparently it was audible because she looked startled and asked me what was wrong) I explained about the frizz issue and she again said — «Oh yeah, I know». She then reaches for the blow torch and I have to remind her about the curly styling we discussed. (–3 for towel torture and poor listening behavior).
I’m nervous so I ask her if she has the necessary curly cream products (I’ll need copious amounts of it) to style my hair and does she know how to do it (rake and shake technique)? I get the same «oh yea; I know» (I now no longer believe anything she says). She uses a teaspoon of the cream on my thick shoulder length hair and begins to scrunch and fluff (wrong technique for my type of hair). I think I finally said in a loud voice… «That’s enough; don’t touch it anymore». I explained that over handling will promote frizzy and big (not the look I want). I got the «Oh yeah, I know» response. (–3 points for being stingy with product and poor technique)
While sitting under the hair dryer she again manhandles the mane while damp. (–1 poor technique)
Once dry, I’m pleasantly surprise that with all the manipulation my hair has minimal frizz. She corrects remaining frizz with a finishing cream with a nice fragrance. (+3 appearance)
My hair felt good but, because of the small amount of product I didn’t expect it to last. (I can usually get 3 days of wear when I do my own hair and I expect at least that much when I’m paying for it). My hair style lasted 3 hours; at most. That’s the time it took to have lunch and run some errands around the neighborhood). I was a huge fluff ball when I got home. (–3 for low return on investment)
The nail in the coffin is that once I could get a closer look in the mirror at home I found I had color on my neck and behind my ears and small dots on my check. (–2 for not coloring within the lines)

The people are very nice and can do all types of hair but I would not recommend the salon for African-​Americans if you want your hair straightened. If your not getting a perm (which I have never had) you need someone who really knows how to use salon tools. I felt I knew much more than my beautician. My beautician was great however, in suggesting products so to wear my hair curly.

I went here to have a full weave done. Sarah was very knowledgeable about doing hair which was great. The salon was nice and she was nice but when it came to doing the weave it was a whole other story. She was quick and when I left I looked really good… but she braided my hair really thick and I ended up taking out the hair in 2 weeks. It wasn’t worth the amount of time and money I spent to have it done. She might be good at other stuff but a full weave is not her forte…

I have been to this salon twice.
First Time: I wait TWO hours for the stylist to see me despite my appointment. They make it right by giving me a free conditioning treatment which did wonders for my hair.
While reluctant to go back again, because of the long wait, I decide to try Joseph Tyler salon again because their effort to make it right was successful.
Upon making my second appointment, I call to ask if they are running late that day, because I had to wait 2 hours the last time I was there. The receptionist replies «Well, that was a Saturday. We get crazy busy on a Saturday.» This response immediately make me question my second chance that I am giving them. It need not be suggested that my expectations be compromised because of their inability to schedule their book on Saturday.
Anywhoooooo: I got back for a single process color ($ 70). I am ushered to the back immediately (it was a Wednesday). The colorist works quickly. Perhaps TOO quickly because the color gets on my arms and on my face. After 35 minutes it’s time for a rinse by the assistant (I haven’t seen the colorist since the application). The color is not spread through the rest of my hair for a period of time. A blowout costs and extra $ 40, and with no place important to go that day I proceed home to air dry. As the color dried I realize that there are grays peeking through. I call the salon and they ask me to come back. I do. I show the colorist the grays. She says: «Well it’s like ONLY 4 strands».
I paid $ 70 to get all the grays covered. This response is unacceptable and reminds me of their response to my 2 hour wait.
She asks if I can stay for 20 minutes so that she can fix it. With work and life to get to, I can’t be there for anymore time that day. I leave and they reluctantly schedule me a «corrective» color treatment for two days later.
As the day goes on, I realize that not only did the color NOT cover everything but that my roots are a DIFFERENT color than the rest of my hair. The roots are lighter than the ends and that there is a significant hot spot (lighter than the rest) on the top of my head.
Fool me, once, shame on you. Fool me twice…
Disgusted, I cancel the appointment and vow to never return to Joseph Tyler.
While they make honest efforts to fix issues, I cannot return there knowing that it is likely that something will go amiss for which they will have to make amends.

Beautiful clean salon. Friendly, courteous & professional staff. Cynthia revived my unbelievably damaged hair; listened to what I wanted, gave me great advice and a plan on upkeep of style and health of my tresses. She’s really sweet and very good at what she does. I’m definitely coming back. :)

This was the first time that I ever went to this salon. Sarah was my hair dresser she was fabulous. She is a very talented stylist. Thank God I found some one that put my mind at ease about my hair. The salon is immaculate, the staff is awesome, and the experience is worth every penny you spend. I will always go there for my hair care needs. Sarah is the best.

You won’t find a better salon in Brooklyn. The stylists can handle (and handle well) all hair types and across a variety ethnicities. I’ve been a devotee of Leona, a popular stylist, for over a year now, and my hair has never felt or looked better. I don’t have to wonder if it’s healthy — I know it is! As a mixed-​black female, its important to have someone who not only knows about «black hair,» but hair care itself. The details are important, and you’ll see how much they matter when you go to Joseph Tyler. It’s not cheap; but then again, most things great things aren’t. Start getting ready for the attention… :)

I am sooooo happy she decided to open a salon in Ft. Greene. I walk past this place everyday with my puppy and they are always in a good mood, great positive energy and are always friendly. I love this place!!!
Cynthia is amazing and I am not exaggerating. She pays attention to what she is doing with every strand, I swear!!! She offers great customer service and actually listens and offers up great suggestions and advise if you don’t know what to get or do with your hair. She makes sure you get a great cut and does it efficiently with great care.
This is a place you can go to for a great haircut at an unbelievable price, (about $ 70 and not including tip) real value for the dollar during these hard times. I never plan on going to anyone else other than Joseph Tyler Salon for a haircut again. I am so happy they are located in my neighborhood!!! :)

Blondes don’t need to have all the fun! I was a hair model for the Joseph Tyler Salon on Valentine’s Day… came as blonde little me and left with a killer shade of brown.
I was a little scared, to be honest… being blonde means your hair can easily be dyed any color. I was a little worried that the Salon would take advantage of this and practice some craziness on my pale strands. To my surprise though, they asked what color I would like (not always the case in these free model stunts). I said I was okay with anything so long as it wasn’t fire engine red or brassy looking. The girl did a stellar job matching a brown to my skin tone and went at it — quick and painless!!! She also did a full blow out and styled it for me… all for free!!!
The girl that did my coloring is also nicknamed Mo… makes it easy for me to remember… you too. I definitely would recommend her as a colorist (seriously good job with mine — very consistent color throughout). The other women there were all super friendly — what a great place for Fort Greene! And if you’re low on cash like me — offer to be a hair model for a cut and/​or color — they’ll do it for free if they need someone, and they’re great about scheduling it when it works for you!!!
