Lutheran Medical Center, founded in 1883, is a full service 450-​bed academic teaching, tertiary care hospital that serves as the hub of Lutheran HealthCare. It includes a Level I Trauma Center, a N.Y.S. designated Stroke Center, STEMI Center, and a bariatric center of excellence.

Lutheran Family Health Centers is one of the largest and most comprehensive federally qualified health centers in the country. It has a 47-​year history of providing high quality health care and social support services to the ethnically diverse and underserved communities of Brooklyn. It has been recognized as a Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home by the National Committee for Quality Assurance. To receive this recognition, a provider must demonstrate that it has exceptional systems of care that help patients achieve the best health outcomes.

History

Established in 1883.

In 1883, Sister Elisabeth Fedde established the Norwegian Lutheran Deaconesses’ Home and Hospital in Brooklyn. The nine bed hospital grew into what we know today as Lutheran Medical Center. Lutheran Medical Center is a full service academic teaching hospital that functions as the hub of the Lutheran HealthCare, a comprehensive health care system serving Brooklyn’s diverse community. Throughout this time, Lutheran has evolved and adapted while always remaining faithful to its original mission, «To Serve Our Neighbors.»

Nurse didn’t know how to administer an Epi pen, even after reading the instructions. Fail.
Then they basically let my friend swell up until administering meds about 45minutes later, just when it started to get busy. The majority of nurses and ER tech are caring, so that’s definitely a plus.

Was taken to the ER via ambulance about a year ago for a head injury. Got a CT-​scan and had the back of my head stapled shut. They kept me overnight and I thought the staff did a pretty decent job looking after me BUT my only gripe was that I had to repeatedly ask, and eventually demand, that they wrap my head in gauze. Call me a MRSA-​a-​phobe but laying on a plastic cot w/​a fresh wound to the back of your melon, in a hospital emergency unit, sounds like a STAPH infection’s wet dream. They should know better

Lutheran is a place for all new students… So basically here has more new students then real doctors… My mom has a stroke and was sent to lutheran. Instead of reviewing and really check what’s going on with my mother, they told
Me to give up. My mom ended up in a coma condition and they kept on sending fuckers to me and said «your mom will never wake up» I know it’s hard for myself but I can’t give up if there are chances. My mom lost her phone there and they don’t give a fuck. My mom end up having bed sort cause they don’t give a fuck. My mom had dialysis and was treated like shit! The worst fucking case is that a fucking resident doctor… RESIDENT DOCTOR (new doctor still in training and learning) and her name is Lynn. GOT THE NERVESSS to be on the phone and not in person saying «your moms brain is dead, there is no chances of waking up» that piece of shit think she’s all that! FUCKING lutheran gives no fuck but just a call to apologize. This place needs to close down or really change all doctor. Horrible and stupid doctor works there. These doctor should get there license again. Smdh!

If I could give this hospital zero stars, I would. If you are in the emergency room there, call a friend or car service and leave. Go to a hospital or a treat and release where they will take care of you properly.
One of the biggest problems we saw in the emergency room was that the staff does not wear tags. There are many residents working in the emergency room and they do not tell you that they are a resident (they just say they are Dr. So and So). These residents names do not appear on your bills either, the doctor they work under (who is not present in the emergency room) name will appear on your bill. If you don’t mind being a guinea pig and letting them practice on you, then stay there. At Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, the entire staff wears tags so you know who you are speaking with and you can see their title.
We complained to patient services and even though we spoke to many people in that department including the head of the department, none were helpful. They weren’t able to communicate effectively with doctors or staff in the hospital to get my husband a bed either after several days.
The emergency room at Lutheran Hospital is a nightmare. If you are not dying, they will leave you sitting there for days. Having excellent insurance might have something to do with how long you sit in the waiting room as well. Lutheran Hospital billed the insurance company private room.

As hospitals go and taking into consideration that hospitals are not hotels, LMC is probably one of the best in Brooklyn. Staff is compassionate and given staffing, they are good. Just keep in mind, it’s a hospital not a five star hotel.

Came here for an emergency for the pediatrics unit.
They treated us with care and respect while rooting on my godson whilst he was being treated.
The waiting area for the patients had posters encouraging to «eat your super powers.»
However it is a saturday and it is the childs unit so its obviously different then an adult in the ER.

This hospital is a disgrace. Nyu should be embarrassed to have their name on the sign outside. The nurses in the ER are sloppy and careless. They can’t even insert an IV without bruising your entire arm in 40 places. My mother came in after having a heart attack and she was left unattended with her heart monitor alarm going off for almost a half hour. The nurses called security and they called the cops when I wouldn’t leave. Luckily the cops didn’t agree with their assessment of the situation. If you don’t cause a scene here you’ll be left to die.

Horrible place. Went there the other day to visit my Aunt. She had been waiting TWO days for an MRI. Which meant they kept telling her not to eat because they had no idea when they’d take her to get her MRI done. Two days of telling a patient not to eat who is already sick and battling cancer. Can you imagine?
Every time we could manage to get SOMEBODY’S attention they never knew much and always left and didn’t return for a half hour or longer.
Finally, my aunt was fed up and decided to get her MRI done by a private doctor and at least rest at home. Because she said the beds were awful and hurting her back. The nurses literally laughed at her request. My dad (her brother) and I were there so they took her seriously. Made her sign a paper saying she knew this was «against medical advice» (there advice was that she sit there for another day or two not eating while waiting for their ONE MRI machine to become free). They then went to get her discharge papers. It took them SO long to bring that paper work that we just left.
As we walked out one of the doctors asked why she was leaving. She told them why and the doctor said «oh yea, I never got an answer after the guy downstairs put me on hold.» She then called again and who knows what happened with that because we just walked away.
What a mess. When I showed up an old man was trying to flee the hospital and screaming at the nurses who were asking a doctor if they should call the police. Now I thought he was crazy, but after just several hours there I now get why he was doing it.

Even if this is the closest hospital around in an emergency, go somewhere else! The ER is a disgrace!
The staff is extremely unprofessional and negligent. You have to beg for any kind of assistance for hours on end. Most of the nurses were extremely rude and inconsiderate. Even the doctors were pitiful.
I was left there laying on a stretcher in the hallway for hours before anyone asked why I was in the ER. When I finally saw a doctor, he immediately got a phone call and left. He didn’t come back for several more hours. I was left in the hallway in agonizing pain for hours before anyone noticed. But I did have the gossiping, giggling and complaining of the staff to keep me entertained. When all was said and done, they said they couldn’t do anything but prescribe pain medication, and to see my regular doctor. I was discharged, still in agonizing pain, received absolutely no answers, and now furious to top it all off!
Do yourself a huge favor, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! This place will leave you there to rot before they even check on you!

I would rate them –5 stars, for their care here. You wait hours for care and have to plead and advocate to get proper care. Do yourself a favor and go to a real hospital. Heartless staff, they have forgotten what compassionate care in the ER is suppose to be like. They don’t come and check on you.

I was in the ER twice recently — once for my husband and once for me. I’ve had previous experiences with this hospital that were not good but since it’s the closest hospital — we got stuck going here. My main gripe about this place after our recent visits are the filthy bathrooms and unprofessional staff in the Ultrasound holding area.
First, I cannot fathom how Lutheran can employ people who speak as if they don’t have an education past the 8th grade and are unbelievably low class. While I laid on a stretcher waiting to be taken in for a test in the holding area, this female employee loudly and proudly spoke about how «cray cray her cousin is.» She proceeded to show off to this other male employee by bragging that her cousin took a «wire hanger and wrapped it around her fist and beat this girl’s ass.» Just what I want to hear while I’m lying there sick so, thanks for the show. The male employee laughed and then chimed in by saying that «Puerto Rican woman are so f’in crazy.» Then he began to talk about how his sister tried to stab him. Really??? At this point, I’m just thinking of what an utter embarrassment this place is. Are these people working in a hospital or getting ready for an episode of Jerry Springer?
As someone who has worked in hospitals for over a decade, I am thoroughly disgusted with the way they spoke in front of patients who are lying there sick. No one wants to hear about your stories from the street… get over yourself and grow up. How are people who act like this employed??? Smh.
And as for the bathrooms, well let’s just say that I was at a street fair the other day and the portable bathrooms there were cleaner.

The only Trauma center in 10 miles great hospital my team is excellent my Nurse is great Nurse McLaren is full of life and exudes a quite confidence. My blood pressure is high and I was not feeling like a superhero more like a zero but right now feeling like a hero they took my ekg and lung function within minutes of coming into emergency and now got my X-​rays so far so good .I never understood the show on tv called married at first sight but after how great Nurse McLaren was to me I understand. Don’t get sick but if you do this the place to go.

A year ago I brought my mother to the ER in this hospital during a life threatening emergency. She had pneumonia, a collapsed lung and sepsis (blood poisoning). She’s in her 70’s and statistically her chances of survival were very very low. The circumstances could not have been worse.
I feel very fortunate that we chose this hospital (actually we didn’t really choose it– it was just the closest hospital and she came by ambulance). Anyway, the nurses and the ER doctors were extremely attentive to her. Once they realized the severity of her condition she was immediately hooked up to medication for the sepsis, given x-​rays of her lung and was admitted to intensive care. At some point in the night a lung specialist came in, Dr. Genovese, with a team of doctors, and they analyzed her condition. Dr. Genovese was very knowledgeable and after speaking to him I had at least some amount of peace knowing that she was in excellent hands. To make a long story short, she ended up remaining in intensive care for 5 days followed by lung surgery and a hospital stay of another four days on a «regular» floor. During her stay on the «regular» floor she was seen by every type of specialist imaginable (she actually has a complicated medical history so this was really necessary). All of the doctors seemed to really care and they all possessed a lot of expertise in their individual fields. As a separate, and slightly funny side note, my mother thought the food was excellent and she raved about her meals (she was on steroids at the time so take it for what it’s worth).
Anyway, I have actually never written a Unilocal review before but I felt obliged to considering the fact that the doctors and nurses at this hospital literally saved my mothers life. No hospital is perfect and it may not be the Ritz Carlton (what hospital is) but the doctors and nurses are skilled, knowledgeable and compassionate and that is exactly what my mother’s condition required. I will ALWAYS be grateful to the staff at this hospital!

So my sister is in the hospital. She works for a hospital but decides to go to this shit hole. I don’t like to curse in my reviews but I couldn’t think of a better word. She also made a very bad decision by choosing this place.
So I drive to the hospital and I’m like what a nice façade. Very modern looking. Woosh once ii walked in, I couldn’t believe the deplorable aesthetics of the hospital. It reminded of the hospitals you see on the show M.A.S.H. I don’t know how my mind related the two but it did. But The floors were dirty in this hospital and the walls in the rooms were disgusting. The ppl seem like they cared about patients but How can patients get better in a facility where it appears that cleanliness is not at the top of the list.
To top it off there was a sign that explicitly said the Chinese ward or floor. The lady said this was fine because the neighborhood the hospital is in is predominantly chinese. Why not distribute the Chinese speaking employees evenly within the hospital so that the issue of language is always addressed. It really rubbed me the wrong way.
There is no way that in this day and age that this hospital should look the way it does. They want to close down decent hospitals with focus to its customer and their health. (Because one way you help a patient get better is through the ambiance.) This place fails and it needs to be addressed. We pay alot for health care. Let’s get healthy my friends.

Well where do I begin I had a stroke the ER was fine and my care was ok until I was sent upstair’s to my room. I was moved 4 Times
The first room was fine and the strange stuff began: Room#2 Cold & Drafty, but still great care giving. Room#3 for rehab unit: I had a semi private room & the lady’s husband & family came at hours past visiting time and spending the night in the room. The main floor nurse was very understanding of my situation; I was moved to room#4. I understand that this man and his family wanted to be supportive of their sick family member; but I thought that they really were taking it over the top with the party atmosphere and spending the night in the semi private with another sick patient whose trying to recover too. but I’m glad everything was resolved.

This place is a death trap.
My father went there because he hurt his back, 10 days later he was dead.
My mother broke her hip, went to this hell hole, wound up on a respirator for 4 months. We had to get a private nurse to take care of the giant bedsore she acquired while she was there. She died.
My son had the flu. Went to the er and this was during the H1N1 pandemic. They told him he was fine and sent him home with no meds. His condition got worse, went back to the er. They left him in a cubicle for 12 hours. When I got there (he was 30 yrs old) I begged someone to help him. A nurse named westley said he was fine. Found a real nurse. my son was intubated, brought to the ICU where he contrated sepsis, had a stroke then died.

The story I have about this place is long and irritating, so let’s let it suffice to say that it is not only the dirtiest hospital I’ve ever seen (sticky floors in recovery room, blood all over the walls, people with 6 and 7 visitors at a time, all with food, talking on cell phones, infants in tow, gum all over the cracked, brown seats in the waiting room, pee, shit and blood all over both the patient and visitor bathrooms), but the nurses were the most incompetant and least friendly or helpful I’ve ever had the misfortune to deal with. Post operatively, they offered no pain meds, no water or ice (which is kept in a locked room. WTF?)
I can not stress enough to you all: run. RUN AWAY. There are so many good and great hospitals in NY, do not go here. Lutheran needs to be burned to the ground and turned into a parking garage or a giant landfill – either would serve the area better.

This is the worst place ever. You cannot make an appt The phone is never answered and calls are never returned.
I went in for dental implants and my mouth was massacred. Now I have to have the implants removed and put back in. I was never told about the risks, and the doctor was completely negligent when it came to the work.
My smile will never be the same.
